Equal And Superior To Season One; Buy It, Read It 18. September 2014
Von Brad Anderson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I have just finished devouring this latest installment in the series of fine books by Marc Cushman. I agree with those reviewers who rate this book as superior to that first effort, which itself was so impressive.

Cushman strives for the most thorough examination of the production details and cultural contact points for Star Trek during its second season, filmed from May 1967 to January 1968 and aired from September 1967 through August 1968. Retaining the format of the first book, Cushman is able to meld together his many sources, including the memoirs of the main persons involved in all aspects of the show, interviews, magazine articles, office memos, all presented against the nation's zeitgeist as each script went before the cameras.

There are those who criticize the first book's typographical errors, and identified misstatement of some historical facts. The revised second edition of the first book, and this latest volume, seem to be the result of the author having taken those critiques to heart. They're a great and compelling read, with a level of accuracy few other books attain.

As a person who was 8 years old and in front of the television when "The Man Trap" first aired, I can tell you I thought of nothing else but Star Trek for the rest of my grade school years. These two books, and hopefully the third season book soon to come, have been an amazing touchstone to recapture the personal memories of those days, and recall what that child thought of the world events and pop culture of the mid and late 1960's. It has also been cathartic to read true details about the vast movement of fans, and the real story of the audience research which illustrate the great worth of the show AT THE TIME IT AIRED, not in the anecdotal rerun revival of the 1970's.

There is a class of super-fan which has expressed a hyper-critical disdain for the mishandling of minute details both important and incidental to this historical account. For the rest of us, this series has been like the other shoe dropping, at long long long long last.

I have the same feelings about volume two as I did about volume one. There is an astounding amount of behind the scenes material here, for those who are that deeply into Trek.

The only complaint I have is that, through either formatting or bad editing, there are lots of repeating sentence fragments and missing text. Usually I can figure out how things are supposed to flow.

More exhaustively detailed chronicles of the production and history of Star Trek's turbulent second year, including the tense contract renegotiation that almost removed Spock from the Enterprise, a widely reported (but probably mostly fictional) feud between Shatner and Nimoy, fears and false reports that the show was to be canceled, and the massive and unprecedented (and only maybe necessary) fan write-in campaign to save the show. A must for fans of the show, and for history buffs, a window into 1960s television and cultural history.

Admitted Star Trek original series nerd. You can't find more information on the show than is contained in these books. Also fascinating description of what it took to put on a show in the 60's.

The most interesting part was the description of William Shatner's interaction with the rest of the cast. The author doesn't pull any punches but shares insight which portrays Shatner in a more flattering light than has often been portrayed in the past.
Excellent and well researched book. 29. Oktober 2014

Great book! I have read both volumes and the research is incredible. The author provides behind the scenes anecdotes and stories about each episode. Growing up watching Star Trek in the 1960's, and reruns for years, I can remember each episode as described and it is simply amazing how the phenomen of the TV show has grown and maintained its position as a leader in the science fiction genre.
