Once upon a time in a place far away, lived a man named Gary Larson who used to draw cartoons. It was a cartoon that appeared for many years in daily newspapers and was loved by millions. (And was confusing to millions more.) But one day he stopped.

Gary went into hiding. He made a couple short films. He played his guitar. He threw sticks for his dogs. They threw some back.

Yet Gary was restless. He couldn't sleep nights. Something haunted him. (Besides Gramps.) Something that would return him to his roots in biology, drawing and dementia--a tale called There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story.

It begins a few inches underground, when a young worm, during a typical family dinner, discovers there's a hair in his plate of dirt. He becomes rather upset, not just about his tainted meal but about his entire miserable, wormy life. This, in turn, spurs his father to tell him a story--a story to inspire the children of invertebrates everywhere.

And so Father Worm describes the saga of a fair young maiden and her adventuresome stroll through her favorite forest, a perambulator's paradise. It is a journey filled with mystery and magic. Or so she thinks.

Which is all we'll say for now.
What exactly does the maiden encounter?
Does Son Worm learn a lesson?
More important, does he eat his plate of fresh dirt?

Well, you'll have to read to find out, but let's just say the answers are right under your feet.

Written and illustrated in a children's storybook style, There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story is a twisted take on the difference between our idealized view of Nature and the sometimes cold, hard reality of life for the birds and the bees and the worms (not to mention our own species).

Told with his trademark off-kilter humor, this first original non--Far Side book is the unique work of a comic master.

Now Larson can finally sleep at night. Question is, will you?

"Dirt for breakfast, dirt for lunch and dirt for dinner! Dirt, dirt, dirt! And look--now there's even a hair in my dirt! The final insult--I can't stand it any longer! I hate being a worm!" It isn't easy being an earthworm, and when one little guy gets mad at a hair in his dinner, Father worm decides to tell him a story. What follows is an ecological fable that combines environmental lessons with the kind of off-the-wall humour that could only come from one man--Gary Larson. Fans of The Far Side have been waiting for Larson's latest work since January 1995 when the final Far Sidestrip appeared in newspapers around the world, and they won't be disappointed. Father worm tells the story of Harriet, a beautiful but stupid maiden who frolics through the forest enjoying the beauty of nature, but completely failing to understand it. The young earthworm learns that nature is not a cute and cuddly theme park designed for the entertainment of stupid humans, but a complex, fragile and sometimes violent system where every creature plays a vital role, even the lowly worm.

Larson is never preachy, the text is hilarious, and his illustrations are filled with wonderful sight gags. It may look like a children's book, but there's enough here to keep the most sophisticated adult chuckling for hours. You might learn something too. --Simon Leake -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

THERE'S A HAIR IN MY DIRT is hysterical... More entertaining than any science class I remember and the foreword by biologist Edward O. Wilson proves it's legit - WASHINGTON POST Bizarre and black-humoured...those made of slugs, snails and puppy dog's tails will love it! LIVERPOOL ECHO The illustrations are highly finished, and spotting the visual gags on each page is fun. THE TIMES Positioned somewhere between Aesop's fables and Roald Dahl... beautifully illustrated. BATH CHRONICLE -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Great stuff.
There's a Hair In My Dirt is a unique book created by a unique human about some (can I say it AGAIN?!) unique worms. This is not a book to be categorized or labeled or whatever. It's a book that intelligent (which covers a lot of ground) readers can read at a young age and enjoy for years to come. Humor is predominent in this "educational fairy tale." But the younger crowd can opt to throw away the educational part for the time being and jump into a barrel of laughs with Larson's drawings and his depiction of Worm Family Life. As the years go by, the growing reader may find more humor (irony, sarcasm, etc.) in the "educational, pontificating" parts. But, chances are, they will not be disappointed!
I'm certainly looking forward to reading the next Larson Picture Book. I wonder what he'll be serving?
"I Kicked Thumper's Ass." Ha, you kill me, Gary.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Recycling in the real world 10. Januar 1999
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
My seventh-grade daughter read it aloud to me as a treat for my 50th birthday, and she kept reminding me that it was not a children's book, as indeed it is not, but an ironic and funny book about how people misconceive what Nature is, especially sentimental people who have sanitized, Disneyesque views of the natural world. Its conclusion is worthy of either Poe or Stephen Jay Gould, as it is well-written for effect and ghoulish (both elements of Poe's aesthetic) as well as being naturalistically accurate (which adds the Gould-ish, to coin a bad pun); the rest would be at home with any great story-teller who values gripping an audience by telling the truth in the guise of an entertainment, especially truths about what is going on in the natural world (which puts it directly at the level of real folk tales before Disney got ahold of them).

4.0 von 5 Sternen Timely, twisted and totally Larsonesque humor. 28. Oktober 1998
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
While "There's a Hair in My Dirt!: A Worm's Story" may not have the instant "punch" of a typical single-panel "Far Side" cartoon, there's plenty to recommend it. The drawings are fun and colorful (love the Dame Edna eyeglasses on Mother Worm). Despite a vague sense of repetitousness, the twisted, often-hilarious story should appeal to youngsters, teens and anyone interested in creepy crawlies. With the current success of DreamWorks' "Antz" in movie theaters and the positive advance buzz (pun intended) for Disney's upcoming "A Bug's Life," it surely is a worm's turn. Besides -- dare I say it? -- it's also EDUCATIONAL (in a delightfully subversive, Larsonesque way).

We bought this book at the Tourist Information Center at Pt. Reyes in Northern California. It was among books about the ocean, lighthouses, scenic spots in that area, and science. My husband, being a devout Gary Larson fan, had to have it. I'm not a fan but I am a grandma to 5 kids from 10 to 1, so it seemed like a cute book they would like to have read to them, or read themselves. It is such a delightful story as well as being educational. The illustrations are great! We immediately began counting all the people we know who would also enjoy it, adults and kids alike. It will be something we buy in bulk this Christmas. Try it, you'll like it!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Dark, Darker, Darkest 23. August 1998
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The humor in this book is so Dark that it enlightens. It cartoons some of humanity's most disturbing questions....from a worm's eye view. Life and death decisions are made on every page, and the dear sweet maiden we want to love turns out to be an unwitting murderess. To make it worse, she is us. We learn more about the Gaia hypothesis than any other book has ever made clear. Please don't buy this book for a child unless you understand it well enough to clearly answer all the questions a child will inevitably raise about its message. If you are prepared, then this can be an excellent children's book

This is another gem from one of the world's (and I don't think I am over exaggerating) great author's. I initially bought the book for myself but it was soon discovered by my four year-old daughter.
Gary's lessons are so well presented that she started asking me dozens of wonderful questions about the world, nature, and most suprising to me, the death of her grandmother. After reading the book, and her hours of gazing at the drawings, she understood that death is something that happens. It is not ominous or bad or evil. It just IS. I didn't even imagine that this would come up.
Thanks Gary.

My dad bought this book when i was nine. It was probably the funniest, most educational books i have read. I mean this book teaches us that just because you love nature you have to understand itbefore you interfear and will ever read. It was so good one day i was reading it in the car and accidentally bought it to school my teacher read it to my whole grade and everyone wanted to borow it from me (even the teachers!) and let me tell you Gary you probable know this but you are really talented
P.S.if i ever wrote as long as this for what it is without someone making me you better read the book!
