Cassie Hobbes is not like most teenagers.

Most teenagers don't lose their mother in a bloody, unsolved murder.

Most teenagers can't tell who you are, where you're from and how you're likely to behave within moments of meeting you.

And most teenagers don't get chosen to join The Naturals.

Identified by the FBI as uniquely gifted, Cassie is recruited to an elite school where a small number of teens are trained to hone their exceptional abilites.

For Cassie, trying to make friends with the girls, and to figure out the two very different, very hot boys, is challenging enough.

But when a new serial killer strikes and Cassie is drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse, she realises just how dangerous life in The Naturals could be.

When I first saw the book cover, I knew I had to read this book. I love the colors, the clear-cut lines, it simply looked promising. But I admit I didn't know exactly what to expect and got rewarded for my curiosity. It was a wonderful, entertaining and exciting book, I loved every minute of reading it!

Cassandra Hobbes loves to spend her time analyzing people and she knows that she's pretty good at it. But she didn't know how good exactly until a mysterious boy comes along leaving her with a business card and the request to call a Special Agent Briggs. Cassie's mom has been brutally murdered five years ago and thus Cassie calls the FBI agent assuming there might be news about her mother's death. But Agent Briggs doesn't want to talk about her mother and from then on her life is about to change completely. She takes up the offer to be part of the FBI's Naturals program.

Because Cassie is a natural profiler. She soon learns that there are other naturals when she moves into a special house where she and the other teenagers are trained by FBI agents. There's Sloane, the natural analytic, Lia, the natural lie detector, Michael, the natural reader of emotions and Dean, another natural profiler. The kids are supposed to work on cold cases and somehow teach the FBI how exactly they do what comes to them, well, naturally. But a serial killer is on the loose and he won't stop until someone makes him.

I don't know why, but I loved this book. It was such a nice combination of crime story, extraordinary talents, YA tropes like identification matters, family history, and included a nice love story. Yes, there is a love triangle between Cassie, Michael and Dean. But somehow, it wasn't annoying (YET).

HASH(0xa355c060) von 5 Sternen If you love mysteries and crime especially with YA characters, GET THIS! 6. November 2013
Von Krazzyme - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
I was very interested by the blurb of this book but I wasn't sure I wanted to read this because the author's Raised by Wolves was a book that I hadn't managed to finish . After reading this book , I'm seriously considering giving that series another shot (I had read like four chapters I think) . The Naturals was such an interesting book that I'm dying to get my hands on the sequel!

The Naturals is a mix of sci-fi, paranormal, mystery and crime fiction. If you love mysteries and crime I would suggest you just get this book already .It's been a long time since I read a young adult crime fiction novel and I wasn't even sure such a genre existed in YA (I usually just read Agatha Christie if I need some mystery and crime ) . Thank you , Jennifer Lynn Barnes for writing such a novel.

Something that I really liked is that I'm not 100% sure if the 'abilities' are a genetic mutation or a paranormal thing. The fact that some people are naturally gifted at some things was very realistic. This made the story more believable and left things to explore in the sequel at the same time. The concept of naturals and all the secondary characters were very interesting as well.

Cassie is a character I really liked. It's easy to relate to her and she's the rare female protagonist that doesn't get on your nerves. She's courageous, smart and not ridiculously naive.

The male protagonists in the novel are the weakest link. There wasn't enough character development for the same. There is a love triangle but I barely paid any attention to it because I was so engrossed in the criminal storyline The romance was like white noise to me and mostly I just ignored it.I'm not saying that the characters were annoying or that the love triangle-ish situation was bad but it just wasn't as interesting as the rest of the novel.

Overall, this was a novel that I didn't want to put down and I for one am eagerly awaiting the sequel.

My Rating:

4 /5

HASH(0xa2b98618) von 5 Sternen Enjoyable mystery/thriller with a twist I didn't see coming. 6. November 2013
Von Cheshire Cat - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
The Naturals is centered around Cassie, one of five "Naturals," who are being trained in some sort of FBI paranormal program. These gifted teens become involved in the hunt for a serial killer, and the danger comes a little close to home.

This is very much a plot-driven novel. If you like a whodunit mystery with a CSI flare, and are not opposed to murder and the morbidity around looking for a serial killer, then this is right up your alley. We get in-depth insight into how a killer's mind works and all the angles investigators must look into to solve crimes. The author kept me guessing the entire time who the serial killer was, how they were going to uncover said serial killer, and what the body count would be (and if it would contain any of my new gifted friends). I honestly did not figure everything out and the ending was a complete surprise. Props to the author for a job well done there. I can usually figure things out, and like that I got stumped.

There was, however, a lack in character development. I didn't feel deeply connected with the characters, and they felt a bit clinical at times. I did like that they had these unique talents and could see the promise of them working as a team. I just didn't connect with them at an emotional level I'd hoped for, even when the plot took us to very sad or horrific circumstances. Whether this was intentional by the author or not, as the characters are supposed to have some mystery about them, I don't know. But regardless, it did affect my feelings toward the characters. I'd like to get to know them better in future books.

The start of this new series is very promising. And there is no cliffhanger, just a set up for more books. So if you like a mysterious, whodunit, thriller with paranormal elements, serial killers, and prospective love interests, then this could be the one for you.

HASH(0xa355cbc4) von 5 Sternen One of the Best YA Thrillers I've Read This Year!! 9. November 2013
Von Stephanie Ward - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
For those of you who read my reviews, you know that I'm a huge fan of mystery/thriller novels. Especially those that can confuse me and thrown in twists and turns to keep me guessing until the end. This book definitely satisfied all of those expectations and then some. The characters are interesting - especially Cassie and the other Naturals that are in the program with her. They all have unique personalities to go along with their interesting natural gifts. Cassie's character is the leading lady, so we get a closer look at her than the others. She's smart, talented, wary of others, and still grieving the death of her mother. She feels like she hasn't fit in anywhere since her mom died - until joining the Naturals program.

There's a bit of a love triangle factor in the book, but I didn't think it was overwhelming and it didn't snatch attention away from the main plot of the book. The plot was fantastic - it's centered around a secret FBI program for teens who are gifted or Naturals at certain specific talents. Talents that, when honed, will help the FBI solve cold cases of serial killers. Things start out creepy as we get a glimpse into the mind of a murderer, who writes in snippets under the name YOU. I was a bit confused at first with this strange second point of view, but once the story got going and you learn more about the characters and the plot, it makes a lot of sense (in a totally freaky way). The story was fresh and original with a fast pace and a great flow that immediately had me hooked from the beginning. The mystery was incredibly well written with lots of thrills and tons of unexpected twists and turns that kept the characters - and myself - guessing until the very end. I definitely got sucked into the book and ended up reading the entire thing in one sitting because I just couldn't stop. It's definitely one of the best books I've read so far this year! Very highly recommended for fans of mysteries and thrillers!

HASH(0xa2b957ec) von 5 Sternen Suspenseful, Intriguing YA 29. Juli 2015
Von Michael Hickerson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Cassie's mother taught her a lot of things -- including how to read people. But Cassie's ability is far more than just figuring out clues about a person in order to give them a psychic reading. She has a natural ability as a profiler -- something the FBI is aware of and wants to take advantage of.

Recruited to a team of fellow teens with natural abilities (Dean can profile, Lea can read if you're lying, Sloane is gifted in reciting facts and figures and Michael can really, really read people), Cassie is promised that she'll get to enhance her abilities and maybe use the FBI resources to finally track down who killed her mother.

The world that Jennifer Lynn Barnes has created for her The Naturals series is a fascinating one. The idea that there would be five teens who would come together as a kind of Criminal Minds for the younger set works very well. It also creates a very bizarre household where there are body outlines in the swimming pool, a test lab in the basement and a library full of cold cases for Cassie to train on.

When The Naturals sticks its procedural aspects, it works very well. I'll give Barnes a lot of credit -- she was able to put in enough red herrings as to who the central villain of this novel was to keep me guessing (wrongly as it turns out) over the entire run of the book.

It's when The Naturals gives us the young adult trope of a love triangle and a conflicted girl trying to choose between two competing guys that I found myself rolling my eyes and wanting to fast forward the audio book. Dean and Michael both engage in a contest to try and woe Cassie and she's clearly torn between the two. But as I listened to the audio version of this book, I couldn't help but wonder why these two guys were so into. Beyond the mystery surrounding her mother, there really isn't a lot of detail given about Cassie. There's not much reason given to why the guys are so in love with her other than she's our narrator and entry point into this world.

At times, I found myself thinking that a book told from Sloane or Lia's point of view might be a bit more interesting.

I suppose I should just be thanking my lucky stars that there are no sparkly vampires or misunderstood mythical creatures lurking in these pages.

And while Cassie may lack the depth I was hoping for, I will admit that Barnes creates enough of a backstory for Michael and Dean that we can see why Cassie is torn between them. Both offer positives and negative reasons why Cassie could or should choose one or the other.

Luckily Barnes keeps the angst to a minimum, concentrating more on the team and the serial killer who may be targeting Cassie. The final few chapters and the big reveal are all well earned by Barnes and the questions about if and how this ties into the fate of Cassie's mother are intriguing enough.

They're intriguing enough that despite my eye-rolling at the love triangle, I'm willing and interested enough to give the next installment in this series a try.

I'll also say that the book was a great listen. I happily fired it up while pounding out the miles and it held my attention for the entire run. Part of this is a great book and part of it is great narration by Amber Faith. Her performance as Cassie got into my head enough that now that I'm reading the second installment in print, I can hear Faith's narration in my head.

HASH(0xa2b9599c) von 5 Sternen YA Police procedural; enjoyable story 5. November 2013
Von K. Sozaeva - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
Book Info: Genre: Suspense
Reading Level: Young Adult
Recommended for: fans of suspense novels
Book Available: November 5, 2013 in Kindle and Hardcover formats and November 12, 2013 in Audio CD format
Trigger Warnings: murder, torture, mutilation

My Thoughts: Shortly after I added this to my bookshelves on a social media site, I received a comment from someone telling me they were going to turn this into a TV series. I can really see that. It has all the elements that a good TV series needs: suspense, action, and lots of young people. I do not know if there are plans to turn this into a series of books, but I would enjoy seeing such a thing. This is a very fast read, and the characters are each distinct, if somewhat cliché, and full of interesting quirks and pain.

It is, of course, full of angst with a love triangle, because otherwise it just wouldn't be a young adult book. However, these things weren't as intrusive as I'd feared they might be. All in all an enjoyable and very quick read, and one I can recommend to fans of young adult suspense without paranormal elements. If you've been looking for a sort of police procedural type book in the YA category, here you go.

Disclosure: I received an e-galley from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.
