Barry Sears looks at why Americans still have dietary problems in spite of following the advice of experts. Challenging the current recommendations for a high carbohydrate diet, Sears looks into man's history as well as the diets athletes succeed best on, to build a new dietary picture. Anyone looking for better health through an improved relationship to what they eat should put this book on their list.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Solid advice, absolutely solid results! 2. Dezember 1998

Ignore the 'ketosis' criticism of this book - it's crazy. The book goes out of it's way to explain why ketosis is bad and how to avoid it by eating enough carbohydrates. Also, this isn't a low-carb diet, it's a balanced-carb way of eating for life. Mainly it's about avoiding insulin resistance by eating lots of vegetables and balancing it with protein and small amounts of healthy fats. You still get more cal's from carbos than anything else, you still get no more than 30% of your diet from fats, and this is NOT like the atkins or other low-carbo ketosis diets. The difference is that it controls your insulin (fat storing hormone) much more closely than other diets. It's sad to see some members of our medical profession so entrenched in their sadly misinformed view that lowfat high-carb diets are the best way to eat. I know that plan hasn't worked for me - it gave me triglycerides >500 and HDL <30, and frequent hypoglycemia - a very dangerous situation. I have already seen great improvements to these numbers based on the ZONE. Give this book a try - I think the advice is solid as a rock. Any doctor who criticises this as a fad ketosis diet is making a fool of himself and obviously hasn't read the book well.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book is my Bible! 13. Januar 1999

For anyone who wants to lose weight, gain energy, and say goodbye to chronic sickness, take it from me, the Zone works. Two years ago I was sick of being overweight and sick of suffering with chronic sinusitis. I read the Zone, followed the guidelines for Zone-friendly meals, and within two days I saw a significant difference in my energy levels. Within two weeks my clothes were fitting again. Now, two years later, I have lost 35 pounds without having gained back one ounce. And I didn't kill myself with exercise. My eating habits are completely changed and I pay attention to every meal without being obsessive about it. And, I haven't suffered with a sinus infection or any illness requiring medication since. As for the complexity of The Zone, I really wanted to lose the weight and get my energy back, so I made myself understand it. Even the technical stuff. But there's no reason why one couldn't skip the really complex stuff and still understand and apply Dr. Sears' method. It works and I tell everyone I know--if you are serious about getting healthy, read The Zone.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I wish I knew about this years ago! 19. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde

I have been working out for years and within the last year I have been running over 12 miles a week, weight training, taking boot camp classes at my gym as well as tai box classes three times a week. I thought I was eating healthy. But I could never lose any weight. I grow up eating bread with every meal. I originaly read Dr. Atkin's boot the New Diet Revolution. I found this boot to be to strigent for my liking. I was feeling tired and weak. I read the Zone and with in the last two weeks I lost five pounds, feel energize as well as I did not suffer from any PMS. I have told my mother about this book as well as a friend who suffers from MS. They both went out and bought the book and are begining the zone plan. This book makes it easy to follow. I was amazed it even suggested what type of fast food I could eat.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Critics are misunderstanding (or haven't read) this book 12. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The way of eating advocated in this book is NOT high-protein, it will NOT promote ketosis, it will NOT make you hungry, it will NOT produce eating disorders, etc. etc. It's obvious that some people have either misunderstood the book (it IS based on simple concepts but they're explained so thoroughly that they can seem overwhelming and confusing) or, as appears to be the case with some folks, they have not even read the book and are making false assumptions about it.
The premise of the book is simple:
1. Virtually all functions in your body are controlled by a group of hormones called eicosanoids. (See the 1982 Nobel Prize - winning research on these hormones.)
2. Hormones work in pairs that counterbalance each other so you don't get too much of any kind of activity in the body. (For example, insulin and glycogen--if you have too much of one/not enough of the other, your blood sugar will be out of control.)
3. These hormone pairs get out of balance if we don't eat balanced meals, and eat them frequently enough.
4. Dr. Sears figures the best balance is this: figure out your individual protein needs, then eat approximately this ratio at every meal: for every 7 grams of protein, 9 grams of carbohydrate (preferably fruits & vegetables rather than starches), and 1 1/2 grams of monounsaturated fat. He believes this to be the ideal ratio for maintaining balance of your eicosanoids, and thus, all functions in your body.
5. If you follow this eating style, according to Dr. Sears, you will lose body fat and gain muscle mass until you reach your body's ideal balance. Then you will hold steady.

4.0 von 5 Sternen a few notes 11. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Having finally read this book, I'm simply amazd at the negative reaction it's gotten. Just look at the reviews below: Some are dire warnings about the dangers of ketosis from people WHO DID NOT READ THIS BOOK, as Sears warns about the dangers of going into ketosis on pages 19, 66, and 67 (in the last one, he warns about taking _too_much_ protein), and how to avoid doing so. "The Zone" is NOT a ketogenic diet, period. Given my short height (65 inches) and activity level I would be ingesting about 160 grams of carbohydrates a day on this plan; how is that even close to ketogenic? In fact, at one point Sears talks disparagingly of "fad diets" that recommended obscenely high amounts of protein and fat with almost no carbohydrates, which is _not_ what "The Zone" is.

An early review also complained that having calculated his calorie intake (he uses "kcal" to be a little smug about it), it only came up to 500-600. You can only do this if you assume, say, a protein block contains 7 grams of protein and no fat or carbohydrates, which isn't the case, though one must admit Sears didn't make this clear. Once you've adjusted for this, calorie levels from all three macronutrients shoot up to the 40/30/30 levels that are recommended. That's also why his prescriptions seem "inconsistent," as when he says he would take 44 grams of fat for 100 grams of protein at one point, but later on, if you do the calculation, 14 blocks of fat seem to come up to only 21 grams. Again, make the logical deductions from other food blocks and it goes up near 44 again. Sears was certainly being confusing, but any reasonably intelligent, unbiased person can figure this out in five minutes (I did).
