5.0 von 5 Sternen tolles Buch 11. Mai 2014
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
lohnender Kauf!

There is an old saying that say's, "If I fish for you today, you eat today but if I teach you to fish you eat forever." Brooke Siler has gone above and beyond with, The Women's Health Big Book of Pilates! She has provided the tools, in this book, for everyone to do Pilates (or eat forever) by utilizing the, easy to read and follow guidelines. The colorful pictures speak for themselves. Being a long time Pilates Instructor the book is exciting and fresh to me. Brooke has a way with words!Brooke teaches us to fish for ourselves in this book. Love this book!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent, detailed, well-organized 28. Januar 2014
Von Kaley Quinn - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is excellent! I also own Brooke Siler's other book, "The Pilates Body", which was my original introduction to Pilates years ago. I had thought that was the only book I'd ever need about Pilates, but I was wrong! This new book goes above & beyond. The first few chapters are for people new to Pilates -- she gives a detailed background about founder Joseph Pilates, her own training, and answers common questions about it and explains how it gets you fit.
The next section is "Pilates for your Plate," which teaches you how to eat healthy. Then is a chapter on technique -- do not skip this chapter! It explains how to do the exercises with proper form. She also includes several modifications, such as for low-back problems or knee problems.

The next section, "Pilates on the Mat: The Series," is divided up into 4 levels, of increasing advancement. So you can start with the level you feel most comfortable. The way the exercises are illustrated is very clear and concise -- a photo of the exercise being performed, and many notes on technique, breathing, and tips and sometimes variations. A beginner would have no problem following it, and even a Pilates veteran would find more information and variations to keep them interested.

After each Level's mat exercises there are a series of "Enders," which include a lot of toning with weights -- done with Pilates techniques of course. For those wanting to use some gadgets & gear there's also a chapter using props such as bands, Magic Circle, Swiss ball, steps, and Tensatoner. A door anchor may be required to do the exercises with the elastic bands.

Another section, "Pilates by Posture," delves into some common postural problems (and how they affect your body) and how to correct them. As a Physical Therapy student, I was particularly interested in this, because I have seen the difference it makes in, for example, back pain, when postural imbalances are corrected.

The next section, "Pinpoint Pilates," goes into detail of how to work on specific problem areas -- abs, back, glutes, arms, thighs, and legs/feet. This is followed by "Pilates by Purpose," which focuses on specific goals such as cardio/calorie burn, breathing & endurance, and better flexibility and strength. For athletes, the "Pilates by Pursuit" chapter gives exercises to improve your sport, whether it's running, swimming, or cycling. Lastly, the "Pilates Rx" chapter gives exercises to help with chronic pain in back, shoulders, neck, etc. which may be the result of muscle imbalances.

Throughout this amazingly detailed and well-organized book, Siler gives "Trainer's Tips" and loads of other info about each exercise and about Pilates in general. This is, quite possibly, the only Pilates book you'll ever need.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Highly recommended. 7. Dezember 2013

Highly recommended. I'm an instructor and rarely recommend books to my students. For one thing there's a lot of stuff out there that calls itself Pilates, but simply is not. But this is the real deal. It's well organized, with beautiful photos and spot on cues. Some other books don't cover much repertoire, and most only cover the mat work. But this book covers a wide range of the repertoire, not just the mat work (it's not called the BIG Book of Pilates for nothin'!), yet it can all be done at home without expensive apparatus. I particularly love all the standing work. This is the Pilates book I've been waiting for. And I'm not just recommending it to my students, I'm buying them a copy!

5.0 von 5 Sternen The BEST resource for Pilates practitioners of ALL levels! 6. November 2013
Von Michelle Wilcox - Veröffentlicht auf
As a long time Pilates instructor, I have found it difficult when students ask for a book reference, to point them to a good, reputable source for classic Pilates. The only book I have ever recommended up until now is The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler. This new book, also written by Brooke Siler, is amazing. It includes information for all levels of practitioners, in an easy-to-use format with great pictures! I love everything about this book, and have recommended it both to my students and to anyone looking to start, or further deepen, their own Pilates practice.

Well organized, good pics, which I've been tearing out and posting on my wall in our exercise room. Wish we could go online and create customized workouts then order in poster format.
