The Tudor dynasty traditionally starts with Henry VII’s victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. In reality, however, the story of England’s most popular dynasty starts much earlier—and it starts with three courageous women who shaped their own destiny. The Tudor dynasty traces its origin to Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Elizabeth of York—women who waged through blood and loss in order to finally emerge as the ultimate female survivors of the Wars of the Roses.

Their posthumous images, however, couldn't be more different, and their lives are still shrouded in mystery. Elizabeth Woodville, the first commoner to marry a King of England, is chiefly remembered as a greedy queen who elevated her huge family, causing a stir in the realm. Margaret Beaufort, mother of the victorious Henry Tudor, is immortalised in history as an overly ambitious, scheming woman who ran her son’s court, pushing his wife aside. Elizabeth of York, the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV, is perceived as a queen subjected to her mother-in-law and trapped in a loveless marriage to a man who ousted the last Yorkist King. It is time to dispel some of the most enduring myths about these extraordinary women who ultimately shaped the early Tudor dynasty.

- Why were Elizabeth Woodville and her mother accused of witchcraft?
- Was Margaret Beaufort a “mother-in-law from hell”?
- Did Elizabeth of York have an incestuous relationship with her uncle, Richard III?

These are only a few of the controversial questions discussed in this book. Within these pages, you will learn much more about the three women who emerged victorious from the Wars of the Roses, who tried to rebuild their lives while adjusting to the new, post-war Tudor era, and who founded a dynasty that would reign for more than a century.

I enjoyed this book very much and finished it quickly. I love the fact that more and more books are concentrating on women of this period. Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Elizabeth of York were described here in great detail because they survived the Wars of the Roses and founded a new dynasty. Well-researched and enjoyable book.

It was a great experience to read this book while watching "The White Queen". Every time I had questions, I opened this gem of a book and learned a lot. In the show, Elizabeth Woodville is depicted as a witch who uses her magical abilities to her advantage and is related to a water goddess Melusina; author of this book points out that charges of witchcraft were attached to Elizabeth's name but she was not related to the mythical Melusina. I loved this book! I would definitely recommend to people who watched "The White Queen" and want to learn more.

This book was a guide to help me understand the reasoning of these three powerful women. I have read so many romance novels about these three, and always had a difficult time keeping them straight in my mind. This was like a "War of the Roses for Dummies" book. It is fast and easy to read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absolutely fascinating... 2. Oktober 2013

I'm both an avid lover of history and have a keen interest in women's history. As such this book was extraordinary and entirely relevant to my interests. "The Women of the Wars of the Roses" was wonderfully written, exquisitely detailed and endlessly fascinating. Moreover, you could easily tell that the author, Alicia Carter, knew her stuff - the research and knowledge she brought to this book just poured out of it in waves. As a woman I think it's important that this book be seen, to showcase the three distinct personalities of women who had an impact on history during a time when woman were a commodity at best and subjugated at worst. A must read, I can't recommend it enough!

Speculative information based upon review of present-day works of others. No primary research. Wish there had been better disclosure of what I was buying - or, if there were other reviews, wish I'd read them.
