Pressestimmen

With characteristic simplicity and economy of line, veteran illustrator Burningham conveys the wonder of Sylvie’s discovery, thus fulfilling a common childhood fantasy—to bring real, live zoo animals into your room and have them sleep in your bed. ... As in so many of his other books, Burningham’s appeal lies in his ability to invent a fantasy scenario available only to young children, accomplishing it again here with consummate grace.
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The sketchy pen, pencil, pastel and watercolor illustrations are set against expansive white space that frames the action from page to page. Text and art work seamlessly together in this perfect tale that mirrors the secret dreams of many imaginative children.
—School Library Journal

With the true Burningham touch, Sylvie’s arrangements have both the impeccable childlike logic and the solid reality of the best fantasy. His loose, masterfully limned drawings are touched with scrumptious, harmonious hues—pure blue with elegant chartreuse, a black-raspberry chair with turquoise legs, various animals in benignly soft browns and grays.
—Horn Book

Pen-and-ink drawings feature lines that fairly quiver, capturing the excitement and action. ... An imaginative romp.

perfect for bedtime reading 27. August 2014
Von My2Cents - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Imagination and curiosity get little Sylvie into a bit of trouble in John Burningham's, The Way to the Zoo. One day little Sylvie notices a mysterious door in her bedroom before drifting off to sleep. The next night, when she notices it once again, she decides to check it out.

Steps, a passageway, but to where? Flashlight in hand, she discovers not just one secret door, but two. When she opens the second door she discovers lots of different zoo animals checking her out. She couldn't resist inviting little bear back to her room to spend the night. Before school, she quickly returns him back to the zoo before anyone notices.

Soon one small zoo animal visitor becomes 2, 3 or 4, and she quickly learns some of them are quite messy, smelly and even one who likes to steal things. One day when Sylvie forgets to close the door to the zoo before heading off for school, she is unprepared for what happens next. She does learn a lesson though and will never forget to close the door again.

A very cute story, perfect for bedtime reading to your little ones. The text is nice and bold, and the watercolor illustrations are so cute and as well. I plan to check out more kids books by this talented author/illustrator.

What's behind that door? A wonderful surprise! 15. März 2015

If your child loves animals and would like to bring home the critters from the zoo when you visit this is the perfect bedtime read. The little girl in this story has a magic door that allows her to bring zoo animals home for sleepovers. Of course, there are a few problems with some of the larger or more "difficult" animals but all goes fairly well until one day the girl forgets to close the special door. When she gets home from school she's in very a VERY BIG SURPRISE! Your child will quickly designate this as one of his/her favorite bedtime books so don't wait too long to purchase a copy.

To be honest, John Burningham has always been a bit of a mystery to me. His books are almost sparse, the storylines simple, but children always respond with such enthusiasm to his understated text and simple drawings and he really captures the make believe world children conjure up.

In this latest offering, a little girl called Sylvie thinks she glimpses a door in her bedroom that she had never noticed before. She finds it leads to the zoo and she begins to bring the animals back to her bedroom. Some of her visitors are naughty, others a little bit smelly and some simply too big; but she has to make sure the door is safely shut before she leaves for school in the morning. Until, one day, she forgets...

This is a lovely story to read aloud to children of nursery/reception age and would encourage writing/drawing activities and pretend play. Small children will love the idea of the familiar and the unusual, plus the illustrations will certainly make them laugh aloud. A lovely addition to any child's bookshelf.

In THE WAY TO THE ZOO, a little girl named Sylvie sees a door in her room she has never noticed before. She discovers the door leads to a secret path to the zoo. Each night, she brings one or a few animals back with her to spend the night and returns them in the morning. However, she has to remember to shut the door each night otherwise all the animals will escape. THE WAY TO THE ZOO contains some wonderful playful watercolor illustrations and is a story that young children will enjoy reading again and again.
