When fifteen-year-old Lystrea is suddenly orphaned and sent to a girls’ home in a mysterious old hotel, she finds that the hotel is larger on the inside than the outside. Upon further exploration, Lystrea and her streetwise new friends discover an amazing secret nation, the Vold, folded in from natural space by powerful sorcerers known as topomancers. Lystrea learns that she is the last surviving topomancer, her parents having been sent into exile from the Vold before she was born. Now she must navigate her bizarre ancestral homeland and its complicated society in order to find and rescue her family.
