Melissa's father is dead and has left behind him a creditor from London's underworld, who threatens to strip her of everything she holds most precious. Most horrifically he will take her and her young brother, in pursuit of his money.

She did not want to take this path, but she desperately needs funds to rescue herself and Peter from that fiend. She has no choice. She must auction the one asset she has: her innocent body.

At the auction for her virgin night, James Carstairs buys Melissa. She enchants him beyond anything he has known, then disappears. Can he find her, and make her his?

From the book:
"Even James was moved. He thought of himself as civilised, but the delicate confection who stood on the tavern's excuse for a stage woke in him a feral response. Sardonically he measured it as two parts lust, one part an instinctive protectiveness towards the vulnerable, and a last part the competitive desire to best all others and win a desirable sexual prize.
These shows were not to his taste. If the woman was truly a virgin - which he usually doubted - then she was to be pitied rather than desired. No good prospect lay before her.
Something about this one occasion roused more than pity and disgust. He examined the woman as best he could, standing less than two dozen feet from her in the crowded and smoky room.
Her face pale and still, only her eyes moved. They roved the room searching for - what?
She looked straight at James. He felt that look almost like a touch, a palpable connection. There was a plea there in her gaze, and desperation. Suddenly he was certain this one was indeed a virgin, alone and helpless in a roomful of men who saw nothing of her but an object for their lust; nothing of the person within. One of them would take her, use her roughly, maybe brutally, and then she would be discarded, broken.
This seemed suddenly the most heinous sort of crime against a woman of such peerless beauty. She was a treasure who should be worshipped, initiated gently to the arts of love. Brought to a knowledge of the true potential her body held for its own and others' pleasure. What a courtesan she would make!
No one in this room could teach her that better than he. For bedroom sport was his favourite of all the sports in which he indulged, and he knew how to cherish a woman and awaken her to herself. Oh, an experienced lover was usually his preference, but even those were often unacquainted with the true heights and depths of the bedroom arts.
He was tempted, he was sorely tempted by her. He could answer that plea he saw in her eyes and bring her more delight than she had never known.
He could rescue her.
James took a step forward."

I've really enjoyed this story and couldn't stop until last page. It's a bit of a drama of this time.

This is a charming, well-written story. There wasn't a single page I didn't want to read and it left me wanting to read more about Melissa and James. It was a delightful way to spend an evening.

It combines humor and drama and thrilling rescues. It describes the period well (1800s) and has good characterization and dialog.

I loved the characters and their sexual interaction. The title might make you feel that this is a sordid story of degradation but it is not.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good historical romance 23. Juli 2013

I enjoyed this story, the first I have read from this author. The story was well written and well edited, the plot, while not completely original, was interesting and kept my interest throughout the book. There was some interesting dialog between some of the principle characters about virtue and what kinds of traits are considered virtuous and what if you're the only one who knows.....(If a tree falls in a forest does it make a sound type of argument)

The heroine is Melissa, a gentleman's daughter, who's been managing the household of her drunken father and sickly, ineffective mother ever since she could walk. When her mother died, all responsibility fell onto Melissa's shoulders, including the tutoring and raising of her much younger brother, Peter. A month after her father died, a shady, oily man came to the house demanding 10,000£ with a scribbled, barely legible IOU from their father in his hand. He promises that if Melissa doesn't pay, she and her young teen brother will work it off in one of his brothels. This man, Black Jack, promises that they'll be watched by at least 4 men at all times, so escape is impossible and gives her 1 week to raise the money. The only thing that Melissa has of any value is her virginity, so she arranges with her maid' s brother to auction herself off for money to fund an escape from London and Black Jack.

James Carstairs happened to enter that tavern only to ask for help in summoning a magistrate for the four men who just tried to mug him and his friend. He meets Melissa's eyes and can't look away. He wants her as he's never wanted anyone before. He bids an extravagant amount of money and buys her. After their night together, Melissa disappears, and he cant find her anywhere.

Melissa and Peter move secretly, changing hacks, changing clothing, and changing carriages. They settle in a small town and Melissa works as a seamstress. Who should show up with his friend whom he is visiting? Of course it's James.....

This was a fun romp of a story. Heat factor hot.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Graphic Adult Subject Matter 22. Juli 2013
Von Panda Fan - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The reviews I read would have you believe this was a sweet and romantic Regency romp. Be forewarned: The is an extremely graphic and adult themed story (the title should be clue enough). There is nothing romantic about a young innocent woman feeling so desperate for her own and her 14 year old brother's safety that she has to result to selling her virginity to the highest bidder. Although the man who purchases her treats her with care, he still bought her and takes her innocence and that part of the story is described in graphic detail. Although Melissa only intended to be used that one night and then escape London and their dire circumstances, James wants to set her up as his mistress and thinks she should be oh so grateful for the life of a whore he is planning for her. He can't believe she's not bursting with joy when he makes his offer and is relentless in his pursuit of her threatening to ruin the safety she has found in the country. While the writing and plot kept reading to the end, I would have to say this is definitely not a light and romantic read. It is dark and at times depressing and while in the end it could be termed a love story it is for sure not for those that are offended by the graphic nature of the subject matter.
