One of the core issues of philosophy for Nagel is understanding the relationship between subjective and objective points of view. This book is a penetrating exposition of his thoughts on this subject. Following the trail of this theme through the mind-body problem, metaphysics, philosophy of science, and ethics, Nagel shows us the tremendous rewards of striving for the objective, while recognizing that the subjective always remains with us and cannot be rationalized away. It is a provocative read for someone who is already concerned with this problem, but not for newcomers to philosophy.

»The View From Nowhere« is an interesting sounding and provoking title, however, in my view, Nagel does not succeed in explaining what he is really up to.
For the most part, his arguments are negative while he does not offer plausible alternatives to the theories he rejects. It does not matter that he himself admits this several times, for it does not mend the imperfection. His greatest failure, though, is that he does not give a clear and distinct definition of the notion of objectivity. Evidently, the notion itself is ambiguous, yet Nagel does not even try to make the necessary distinctions throughout the fields of investigation which his book comprises.
Furthermore, for Nagel there appear to be only two kinds of view, namely the subjective and the objective; he does not even consider the possibility of intersubjectivity or an intersubjective view concerning epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and ethics respectively.
What Nagel takes as objectivity or an objective view is not objectivity but the usual human ability of using the concept of objectivity. By this concept, however, we only become aware that the world does not depend on our thoughts. It does not make us able to actually take an objective view on whatsoever.
In terms of ethics, Nagel even thinks there could be objective values. Needless to say, this is nonsense, for what Nagel considers objective values are only values from a human standpoint. For example, pain cannot be something bad in itself, since there is no pain but in sentient beings. The world, the universe, or what you will call it does not care whether there is life, whether there are sentient beings, whether they live well, whether they suffer or die. What Nagel has in mind, rather, is the level of intersubjectivity. We have the concept of values, and we have thoughts, partly about values, of which one characteristic feature is that we can communicate them (I am following Donald Davidson here). Yet there are no entities deserving to be called 'values' which would exist independently of us, that is, even if we did not exist and had not ever existed. Pain, on the one hand, can be only phenomenal experience, as in conceptless but sentient beings, or, on the other hand, phenomenal experience and a concept of this phenomenal experience, as in us humans, so that we may communicate it or about it.
Although I sincerely respect Thomas Nagel as a philosopher and really appreciate, for example, his essay »What Is It Like To Be A Bat?«, I cannot recommend this book, since there are clearly better books to buy and read.

I was introduced to this text in a graduate philosophy course. At first I thought it was a pitiful bunch of hopeless confusion, kind of a philosophical attempt to have everything you want without paying the price. I was fascinated with Hegel at the time and I found Hegel's view to be much clearer (imagine that) than Nagel's. But Nagel seems to have grown on me after I finished reading him, and now I think Nagel has become a part (but only a part) of my outlook, doubtless in a twisted form. It was worth reading and talking about, but it takes time to sink in and have its effect.
