She smiled at me even though I knew she must be in extreme pain. "Thank you for loving me," she said.
I was the one who should be thanking her for loving me. I couldn't think about that right now. There was too much blood. I had to help her. "Tell me how to fix this."
She coughed and cleared her throat. "Your love has fulfilled me."
"No, please," I said, "don't talk like that. You're in shock. That's all. We'll get help soon."
"Chris," Sarah said. "You have to let me go. I love..."
She sank into my arms as her life left her body.
"No! Please, God, no."

When Chris McCowan's fiancée, 24-year-old Sarah Eason, is killed during a bizarre robbery near Austin, Texas, an unlikely trio teams up to find those responsible for her death. The trio, Chris, a 31-year-old computer science professor, Percy "Tex" Thompson, a 40-year-old wheelchair bound ex-con student of Chris', and 65-year-old head librarian Liz Siedo, pool their talents to find the criminals after local law enforcement agencies have given up.

Chris wants an eye for an eye even if it means giving up God and the church where he and Sarah were to be married. He sets out to learn the tricks of the trade from his ex-con student, all while continuing to teach and coming to terms with his grief. Angela, who claims to be an FBI agent, joins the Vengeance Squad to help the three find the killers.

Sidney W. Frost is a former computer science professor, ex-marine, and author of Where Love Once Lived, a prize winning inspirational novel.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Vengeance Squad 19. Januar 2012
Von Carol A. Brown - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Sidney Frost's Vengeance Squad delighted me in that I don't usually read "shoot `em ups" or cop or crime types of books--but this one wasn't like that, or was it? I almost thought it might be mushy romance until the helicopter landed and a bunch of thugs robbed the bank and killed Sarah. Chris, the main character is a computer nerd, a professor type with OCD tendencies! Not your typical protagonist for a crime story! Yes, there was crime--murder, robbery, illegal aliens and a terror plot. Chris wanted vengeance, wanted to blow his fiancé's killers off the earth and make their families suffer as badly as he did. An ex-con/ex-marine in a wheelchair and a grandmotherly librarian complete the unlikely core of Chris's "vengeance squad." Using computer savvy they follow one clue after another and end up traveling from Texas to Massachusetts and back, closely followed by the FBI or maybe MI5...

The author, Sid Frost, did an excellent job keeping the action moving. Some stories suspend the action to spend pages on scene description. Sid didn't go into laborious detail--he told you enough so you knew where you were without drowning in it. I didn't notice the sparseness of description because the action pulled me in. What was going on in the action and in people's thoughts was what was important.

I asked myself, "If it wasn't a crime story, what was it? It is a story of one man's response to grief; it chronicles the temptation to turn from faith in God in the face of a bitter loss. Such a time is a turning point--you turn to God for strength or away from Him in anger because He did not intervene. It is a story of how turning from God leads to other things, and sin becomes easy. Without intervention on God's part and the part of some big hearted, big spirited people the story would have had a much different ending! Overall I came away feeling that love triumphed over violence.

Warning: This book will grab you. And if it does, you could end up staying up late to finish it--like I did! I would definitely recommend this book.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good Plot Twists and Turns 1. Februar 2012

Chris McCowan's fiancee is murdered right in front of him and he swears off of God and on to vengeance. With his unlikely trio of helpers, he sets out to find her killers.

I had a hard time getting into this story. The first person narrative and more action than emotion made it hard for me to connect with Chris, the main character. I'm glad I stuck with it because the plot unfolds in several nice twists and turns. The second half of the book picks up nicely and the story plays out to a very satisfying ending. No spoilers here - you'll have to read it yourself! Sidney Frost left the door open for a sequel, I think, and I'll gladly read it if he comes through.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sidney Frost Does It Again 7. August 2011
Von Dr. Rollo K. Newsom - Veröffentlicht auf
The Vengeance Squad, is a one sitting read. I've warned you, don't start it until you have time to finish it! It is an emotional tear-jerking roller coaster, moving the reader rapidly through delight, tragedy, anger, hope, frustration, fear, gratification and if not vengeance at least comfortably satisfying resolution.

The characters, particularly the four main characters are not only physically described, but are most effectively developed as personalities through what they do and what they say. This technique creates a remarkable affinity between the reader and the characters. Very quickly and very emphatically I came to identify with these characters and suffer or thrill, bleed and heal right along with them and enthusiastically root for them.

In an earlier book Where Love Once Lived, Frost created believability in part by using real places for settings even though it is clearly fiction. I suspect the use of places he knows helps him write with confidence - it is real and so it reads real. The setting for most of the action in this book is several cities in Texas and New Mexico, but one episode takes place in Rowe, Massachusetts a place I had never heard of but now not only believe but even feel as if I sort of know the place. And I'd bet a bundle that he has been there! In this book Frost uses real towns, restaurants, hotels, highways and specific locations like named malls, the down town Houston tunnel, the Galveston docks and so on. Even drive times are accurate and vehicles are appropriate. All these things are in fact real and real is believable.

In a similar manner emotions and values are so appropriate to the circumstances and action that the you just know it is all true. This aspect of the book is very important to me because I believe this emotional authenticity is what keeps this Christian novel from being too "preachy."

The careful attention given to the development of the main characters and the fact that they are all still functioning at the end of the book along with a little cliff hanger suggest that this maybe the first of a series. I sure hope so.

I received a copy of this book from the author for review purposes. I was not obligated to provide a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Team of Unlikey Characters and a Bookmobile 12. Mai 2013
Von B. J. Robinson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Really enjoyed this short novel. It's only 12 chapters, but the author has packed so much into those 12 long chapters. An unlikely team acts like the A Team. If you're a librarian or know one, you'll love this novel and how a bookmobile was used in it. Love, loss, heartache, pain, and a love-hate relationship with God spirals throughout the book, but it ends with love for God and a lesson in life about how when we're hurt the deepest, good can still come out of it because the Lord works in mysterious ways. A librarian, a wheelchair-bound excon, and a computer tech make up a team of the most unlikey characters you'd ever expect to work in the way they did. Tex is in a wheelchair, but he doesn't act like it. Liz is a huggy librarian who is smart and talented when it comes to research. Besides that, she knows people the team needs. Chris is the computer tech who is in love with Sarah and about to be married. His whole life changes in a split second. Who is Angela? Is she with the FBI? Chris suspects she's setting them up since it's like someone knows their every move. On top of that, someone is getting in his apartment without forcing entry. He hasn't given anyone a key. Will this unlikely team of characters be able to solve the puzzle, or will their love for adventure and mystery leave them with regrets? I highly recommend this novel, especially for those who enjoy short books and series. If you enjoy this one, there is another waiting, but unlike some of those where you have to read the next book to find a solution to the conflict in the first, this one has a resolution even though it's part of a series. That's the kind I like. I hate it when a book leaves you wondering, and you have to wait for the next one to find out what happened. I love a good cliffhanger as much as the next person, but not for the original conflict. A nice hint is enough for me to want to find out what happens to the characters next or to minor characters in the first book. I highly recommend this novel. You'll love huggy librarian Liz.

5.0 von 5 Sternen You'll Want To Cheer For This Book 16. August 2011
Von Inspirational Books - Veröffentlicht auf
You'll want to cheer the love-driven determination, sigh at the protagonist tender way he holds on to her memories. And you'll take notice how God weaves His plans that go beyond our own. The story leaves one wanting the next sequel to find out how once again, love wins, the love that goes beyond justice or vengeance."--Janet Perez Eckles, author
