Kurzbeschreibung

18. November 2008 Cotton Malone
In 323 B.C.E, having conquered Persia, Alexander the Great set his sights on Arabia, then suddenly succumbed to a strange fever. Locating his final resting place–unknown to this day–remains a tantalizing goal for both archaeologists and treasure hunters. Now the quest for this coveted prize is about to heat up. And Cotton Malone–former U.S. Justice Department agent turned rare-book dealer–will be drawn into an intense geopolitical chess game.

After narrowly escaping incineration in a devastating fire that consumes a Danish museum, Cotton learns from his friend, the beguiling adventurer Cassiopeia Vitt, that the blaze was neither an accident nor an isolated incident. As part of campaign of arson intended to mask a far more diabolical design, buildings across Europe are being devoured by infernos of unnatural strength.

And from the ashes of the U.S.S.R., a new nation has arisen: Former Soviet republics have consolidated into the Central Asian Federation. At its helm is Supreme Minister Irina Zovastina, a cunning despot with a talent for politics, a taste for blood sport, and the single-minded desire to surpass Alexander the Great as history’s ultimate conqueror.
Backed by a secret cabal of powerbrokers, the Federation has amassed a harrowing arsenal of biological weapons. Equipped with the hellish power to decimate other nations at will, only one thing keeps Zovastina from setting in motion her death march of domination: a miraculous healing serum, kept secret by an ancient puzzle and buried with the mummified remains of Alexander the Great–in a tomb lost to the ages for more than 1,500 years.

Together, Cotton and Cassiopeia must outrun and outthink the forces allied against them. Their perilous quest will take them to the shores of Denmark, deep into the venerated monuments of Venice, and finally high inside the desolate Pamir mountains of Central Asia to unravel a riddle whose solution could destroy or save millions of people–depending on who finds the lost tomb first.

Synopsis

Cotton Malone is back and the stakes were never higher: a deadly virus that could wipe out civilisation as we know it -- and a cure that lies buried in the past. The Venetian League, a secret group of 45 political and economic leaders from around the world, has joined forces with a coalition of former Soviet republics to create a potentially devastating biological weapon, a bird flu-like virus that has been artificially mutated to pass from human to human. Whoever develops the cure would control the future of global warfare. Yet that cure may have been discovered centuries ago, and if so the clue to the location of the formula lies buried with Alexander the Great. When Cotton Malone's former companion Cassiopeia Vitt hears about it, she and Cotton join the hunt for Alexander's long-lost tomb, and what at first seems to Cotton a wild quest for the answer to a perplexing historical riddle becomes a harrowing fight for truth that has unimaginable repercussions, both geopolitical and terrifyingly personal. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

This book initially took a bit of getting into and I feared that I wouldn't be able to finish it. But the more I kept reading, the more I became more and more engrossed in it. So don't be put off if the start feels a bit hard or unwieldy. Keep going!

In this book, the historical subject and subject of the conspiracy is Alexander The Great. As usual, Berry introduces a secret society into the story - the Venetian League - which makes me feel as if I am surrounded on all sides by secret societies and ruthless assassins!

Berry also introduces a fictional country - The Central Asian Federation - made up of former Russian republics who have all banded together to form one country, under the dictatorship of Supreme Minister Irina Zovastina. Zovastina is a huge fan of Alexander and the Iliad and she is determined to find Alexander's grave. To this end, she instructs two of her men to find and take by force eight elephant medallions which were once the property of Alexander. She is convinced that these medallions hold the clue to what really happened to Alexander in his final days.

But she begins to attact the wrong kind of attention in the form of the US Government and once again, Cotton Malone, Cassiopeia Vitt and Henrik Thorvaldson find themselves fighting one of the world's biggest dictators for control of the Middle East. Added to the mix is a colleague of Zovastina's who is a multi-billionaire and head of the Venetian League. He is convinced he has found the cure for AIDS and he wants to make billions from it. But will Zovastina let him live long enough for that to happen?

A superb addition to the Berry series and I can't wait for the next one to come out in the next couple of months.

I have to admit that Steve Berry is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. He just does not disappoint his readers.

No. 6 in the Cotton Malone mysteries is not exception. As in the previous five novels Steve Berry offers the reader a fast moving plot linking present and past. It is a gripping plot from page No. 1 onwards. The plot is slightly weird and amusing: if one puts it very short: a power hungry dyke and head of state who fancied herself as the new Alexander the Great goes for world domination and an HIV cure to save her estranged and HIV infected lover. At the same time an equally power hungry financial cartel tries to dominate the world markets. All before the background of a new super power in Asia. There is enough background to make it not too unrealistic while at the same time keeps it clearly in the realm of a novel.

The chapters are short and easy to read and one simply wants to know what happens next. The main characters are the same as in books 1 to 5 and they develop further, becoming rounder and more human. It is not the so often lovingly portrait US vision of the (male) hero saving all on his own the world. Here it is a team, male and female, strong, but weak as well who fight the evil. But Steve Berry writes in such a way that one does not need to have read the first five novels in order to understand these characters. This novel is sequence but stands as well alone and makes perfect sense.

All in all, I just loved to be entertained by Steve Berry's writing: top notch. I am looking forward to his next novel.
