Shein does an excellent job of explaining the concept of Permaculture. "

Kurzbeschreibung

Once a fringe topic, permaculture is moving to the mainstream as gardeners who are ready to take their organic gardening to the next level are discovering the wisdom of a simple system that emphasizes the idea that by taking care of the earth, the earth takes care of you.

The Vegetable Gardener's Guide to Permaculture teaches gardeners of every skill — with any size space — how to live in harmony with both nature and neighbors to produce and share an abundant food supply with minimal effort. Permaculture teacher Christopher Shein highlights everything you need to know to start living off the land lightly, including how to create rich, healthy, and low-cost soil, blend a functional food garden and decorative landscape, share the bounty with others, and much more.

This inspiring, easy-to-follow, information-packed, practical guide will help you transform your garden into a food forest that feeds you for years to come.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Best Basic Guide To Permaculture 27. Januar 2013
Von catamount - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I recently became very interested in permaculture and have read at least a half dozen books on the subject. Most of the books, including Bill Mollison's epic work and the Edible Forest Gardens book, are rather dry.

I was at the book store and found this book and hadn't heard of it before (because it was published only a few weeks ago). This book is the most refreshing take on the subject that I have read yet. It covers a lot of ground, including soil conditioning, guilds, hugelkulture, food forests, swales, zones, edges, etc. While not a complete reference, it is fairly comprehensive on the practical side of permaculture. On the other hand, it is fun to read because of all the great pictures and drawings. The layout and editing is good, so the information is easy to grasp.

I haven't finished reading it yet, but have read a bunch of it and leafed through the whole thing. There doesn't appear to be a ton of info about using livestock in permaculture, but I don't think that detracts from the book. Honestly, most folks won't be able to have cows or pigs in their permaculture garden anyway, lol. This book is more aimed at urban gardeners I think, or people with an acre or two, but the information can be scaled up to larger farms. I would say it is not a complete guide to permaculture, but the reader will certainly learn enough about the subject to practice it without needing to read other books.

I think this may be one of the best basic guides to permaculture out there. So I would say if you only get one book on permaculture, this is it. I got this book for my wife, who is just getting into gardening and who will absolutely not read Edible Forest Gardens or Sepp Holzer's Permaculture, but I think she will enjoy this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Most Readable & Concise Introductory Permaculture Guide Out There 15. Februar 2013
Von Max Glycine - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This book is a great gift to anyone who gardens. It has top notch photo's and illustrations. The scale of the garden projects in this book are all pertinent to most people's life and budget. The plant selection works in pretty much any climate.

This is the first permaculture book in english, plain english. I've read all the major permaculture books. Pretty much all the permaculture guides, even the good ones focus on large scale land development and use alienating quasi-academic language, even Gaia's Garden supposedly the most accessible permaculture book is not something anyone reads cover to cover. This is.

It's on timber press. They always put out really solid horticulture books.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Introduction 15. April 2013

I am just getting into permaculture and I found this book easy to understand and well laid-out. However I was hoping for more "how-to" and less overarching philosophy. It would have been nice to have more information about various guilds and more in-depth sections on permaculture in various climates.

This is a GREAT book!
It has information for everyone, from those new to Permaculture to the experienced. The author has an easy to follow writing style that is a pleasure to sit down and read, inviting you into this way of living. Photos are fantastic! He shows how anyone can incorporate permaculture into thier own homes, regardless of where they live. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone living in this changing climate and world of diminishing reserves. It is the PERFECT READ for curling up on a sofa with the newest seed catalogs to make plans for the up coming seasons. CHECK IT OUT!

5.0 von 5 Sternen novice gardner who found this book inspirational 24. Juni 2013
Von LA Mama - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I've always dreamed of having a vegetable garden, but never had the space in our condo. We recently purchased a house, giving me my first opportunity to get started. My husband surprised me with this book and before reading it I had no idea what Permaculture was. What an inspirational read! Loved it! Great information, and wonderful book design/layout. It gave me a whole new perspective on how to plan a garden space. Prior to reading this I was envisioning a planter box with simple rows of plants and now I know that this isn't the most effective method. I also learned a lot about how to build healthy soil. This book really got my creative juices flowing on how to create a beautiful, functional, and fertile garden. Can't wait to put the ideas into action!
