At this point in my life, after being an omnivore for all of my almost-70 years, it's unlikely that I'll become a vegan. In recent years, however, I have reduced the amount of meat that I eat, and I've added more fruits and vegetables to my diet. So in the interest of healthier eating, I took a look at Olivia Kennedy's little book on vegan desserts. The book defines vegan chocolate as a dark chocolate that does not contain any animal content. Vegan chocolates are claimed to be healthier, with a unique taste that's different from other commercialized chocolates.

The book contains more than thirty vegan desserts. There's a nice variety of desserts, including cakes, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, muffins, sorbets and ice cream, bonbons, and truffles. All recipes use vegan ingredients - for example, soy milk instead of regular milk, and egg replacer instead of real eggs. With some of the vegan substitutes that are used instead of animal products, many of the recipes appear to be healthier than their non-vegan counterparts, particularly in fat content. I wish the recipes had included nutritional information, such as protein, carbohydrate, and fat content; and dietary fiber per serving. This information would have made it easier to know just how healthy each recipe is. Carbohydrate content would be especially helpful for diabetics.

The recipes did look quite tasty, and except for some frosting recipes, all of them included vegan chocolate. The book is definitely worth a look for vegans.

To be fair to the reader, you can probably find these recipes or something like them all over the internet. To be fair to the author, she has collected a stack of them (not sure if they are her own?) into one beautiful and professionally presented book. Any vegans out there need to jump on this quick smart because of the sheer convenience of having so many yummy recipes in the one place. Even non vegans will get something out of it because a good recipe is still a good recipe, regardless of the ingredients.

I love chocolate and I love desserts and sweets. So I learn a lot of an interesting desserts and sweet recipes in this book. The author want to provide the reader who decided to be vegan, have time for something sweet. So I think people who decided to be vegan, still have fun with their desserts and sweets. This book has many good recipes for sweets and deserts suitable for vegans. Many of these recipes sound delicious and I have suggested this book to other vegetarians in my family.

A vegan or vegetarian who is serious about avoiding all animal products in their diet needs to look critically at all the things they eat. This book uses a number of ingredients that a vegan or a vegetarian might want to check if the particular ones they get really contain no animal products.
Personally I am a vegetarian and not a vegan but one of the things I try to avoid is white sugar, and brown sugar made by adding molasses to white sugar. Some, but not all, white sugar makers use charcoal made from cattle bones for filtering out some of the natural colours of the cane sugar. Some of the recipes in this book specify white sugar. Maple syrup is another thing that a serious vegan might want to be careful about because some, but not all, maple syrups have been made using small amounts of animal products in their refining.
However, this is not a serious criticism of the book because most vegans will know about white and brown sugar and maple syrup already and if they want to use it will have found their own sources suitable for vegans.

My friend is strictly vegan and my son and I are leaning more and more toward veganism. My friend is always saying how hard it is to find vegan DESSERTS that actually taste good, and chocolate is still a favorite ingredient of course. From browsing the recipes, I find most of them to be mouth-watering and most of the ingredients are things that are readily available, not something you have to travel to an ethnic market or health store to get. I can't wait to try some of these recipes and prove to my friend that there are worthwhile vegan desserts!
