The story begins in the aftermath of Memnoch the Devil. Vampires from all over the globe have gathered around Lestat, who lies prostrate on the floor of a cathedral. Dead? In a coma? As Armand reflects on Lestat's condition, he is drawn by David Talbot to tell the story of his own life. The narrative abruptly rushes back to 15th-century Constantinople, and the Armand of the present recounts the fragmented memories of his childhood abduction from Kiev. Eventually, he is sold to a Venetian artist (and vampire), Marius. Rice revels in descriptions of the sensual relationship between the young and still-mortal Armand and his vampiric mentor. But when Armand is finally transformed, the tone of the book dramatically shifts. Raw and sexually explicit scenes are displaced by Armand's introspective quest for a union of his Russian Orthodox childhood, his hedonistic life with Marius, and his newly acquired immortality. These final chapters remind one of the archetypal significance of Rice's vampires; at their best, Armand, Lestat, and Marius offer keen insights into the most human of concerns.
The Vampire Armand is richly intertextual; readers will relish the retelling of critical events from Lestat and Louis's narratives. Nevertheless, the novel is very much Armand's own tragic tale. All right, this book was good in the sense that it gave us the insight to one of her most likeable vampires, Armand. I did enjoy the story, the settings the sex scenes (if only I could have such a luscious love life) yet after finishing the book I scratched my head and asked myself, havne't I read this story somewhere before? I.E. Beautiful mortal is found by vampire, vampire and beautiful mortal have a mad passionate affair, vampire turns beautiful mortal into vampire. Next, beautiful vampire that was beautiful mortal starts to question everything. Who am I really? Why does God allow this? Who was the first...and so on. It gets pretty tiresome if this plot is done again and again. Enough with the religious questions! I am a fan of Anne Rice but though she loves detail, and good character development plot to her is like an after thought which more often then not spoils her great landscapes and characters. I hope in the upcoming book that we can leave the past behind; please Anne we've had enough history lessons! Lets see some action, some tragic events! By the way folks what on earth happens to all those dead bodies that the vampires kill? I mean you would think a cop or two would start to get just a little suspicious.

Wie lange habe ich auf so ein Buch gewartet? Schon lange habe ich die Vampirchroniken mitverfolgt und meiner Meinung nach wurde es jetzt wirklich einmal Zeit für eine Geschichte die sich wirklich nur mit (meinem persönlichen Liebling) Armand befasst, da er nämlich immer viel zu kurz gekommen ist. "The Vampire Armand" erzählt Armands Lebensgeschichte aus der Ich-Perspektive, wobei dem Leser auf Grund dessen, seine emotionale Verfassung sehr verständlich nahe gebracht wird; da bei einer objektiveren Erzählung Unklarheiten aufkommen würden (wie in den vorangegangenen Büchern). So wird nun endlich Klartext geredet und alle Erfahrungen seines Lebens werden preisgegeben (seine lang verdrängte Kindheit, die Zeit mit Marius in Venedig, der römische Orden...). Das es dabei auch zu Unstimmigkeiten im Bezug zu (der 1. Kurzbiografie) "Fürst der Finsternis" kommen kann fällt nicht sonderlich stark ins Gewicht. Anne Rice hat es wieder einmal geschafft mich mit ihrem umwerfenden Erzählstil und einer fesselnden, wirklich niemals langweiligen Story zu begeistern. "The Vampire Armand" zählt schon jetzt zu einem der besten Bücher, die ich jemals gelesen habe. Ich liebe es!

Vivid, flowing words make up this intricately woven and thoroughly descriptive novel, but what else is new? Its an Anne Rice novel, we expect that as readers. The problem with this novel is that it may be an interesting read for anyone unfamiliar with her previous work. However to fans, although the book may offer some interesting insite and tidbits on the characters, it seems so DONE and STALE. Every page is like a rehash of another novel she's written before. Vampire tells life story to someone who writes it down...blah blah blah. It seems too similar to "Interview..", "...Lestat", "Pandora", and even non vampire books like "Servant of the Bones", all of which were written by Rice. Armand has always been a very interesting character with his boyish deviltry, and the novel does offer some very dynamic and sensual moments, but nothing makes this novel any different from any of Rice's other novels. It's a little disheartening when an author starts ripping of other people's works, but it's even worse when she's ripping off her own previous ones.

This could have been so much better.
