4.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Thesis spoiled by poor editing 8. Mai 2012
Von Anthony Harrison - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The Valkyrie Option by Markus Reichardt is a well-plotted, well and believably charactered alternative history novel. It is, however, marred by some characteristic poor editing. I truly wish that authors would read what they write - preferably before publication!

For example, and I'm not quoting, only paraphrasing - " I think that 1 ST corp should attack southeast, Bradley " said. Where we can gain the most , with only little cost ". Then we can encircle Caen."

If you can make sense of that, you can read this book fluently...

However, grammatical and President ROOSEVELT or FDR (not my capitalizations!) aside, the plot is extraordinary... a well-researched, cogent, and compelling argument for the success of the 20th July 1944 plot - resulting in a precursor of the European Union, and the constraint of the Soviet Union (Stalin) to its (approximately)1941 boundary. Someone might forgive the author's mistakes, but given the overall level of research they are elementary - for example, and just talking of German ranks - Feldmarschal should be Generalfeldmarschal, Colonel General should be Generaloberst - but the SS ranks are correct! The Germans never had a 'Brigadier' - they were the multitude of Generalmajor! Then we move on to the Soviet ranks...

Taking as its primary premise Stauffenberg's successful assassination of Hitler, aided by Rommel's survival of an Allied air attack, the author takes us through, in a logical, step-by-step process, the execution of Operation Walküre - including its glitches. The scenario is believable, and the overall result also believable - even the appointment of Stauffenberg as Deputy Defence Minister of new government. Without revealing too much of the ensuing plot, let me just say that it brings into play many of the major characters of WW2, each as an entirely credible character - expressing well-documented (and annotated, indexed and explained) views, policies and agendas. Roosevelt's fixation on the formation and objectives of the United Nations plays a major role in the policy formulation aspects of this novel.

The pacing, characterisation and plotting of this novel are above all thoroughly researched and documented (almost academically), and believable. Unlike many of the genre, this novel actually reaches a logical conclusion!

Re-reading the text and some conscientious editing would have significantly improved this contribution.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Horrible editing, great story, highly recommended!!!! 30. Januar 2013

I am a sucker for alternate WWII history, and started running out of good novels to read. Robert Conroy, Harry Turtledove, Douglas Niles, and so many other great authors can only do so much, before I read all their stuff, cover to cover. Then I run into this obscure novel, and...

This novel is no attempt at a Nobel prize, and historians could surely tear its point of departure to pieces in two minutes or less, the editing is simply AWFUL, and continuously distracts the reader. The author could definitely benefit from learning about quotes, apostrophes, and the occasional comma, and reading Shirer in depth, but... Make no mistake, this is a GREAT story, the pacing is superb, the characters interesting and absorbing, and the whole experience thoroughly entertaining. I literally could not put my Kindle reader down, but at the same time did not want to finish the novel. I kept wanting more!

At $2.99, this is an excellent value. If you like alternate WWII history, do yourself a favor, and try this novel. Congratulations to the author. If he writes another one, I'll buy it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen More than you bargained for.... 6. Juni 2013

I consider the "what if" genre a technique of historical analysis... and vice versa. This book is a perfect example. The value comes from the meticulous attention the author took to situate the actions in the actual places and situations and people his account with detailed accurately drawn historical figures. The action moves plausibly forward to a credible outcome.

Did I mention? It's great fun to read!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Pretty good alternate history story -- too long 2. Januar 2014

This is a VERY long book. The story is pretty meticulously laid-out, and fairly plausible. Its main flaw is that in my opinion the author goes into excruciating detail to show how his alternate history scenario plays out. Since none of this detail is real, my question to myself as I was reading this book was whether it really was worthwhile wading through all of this imaginary detail to get to the gist of the story. Perhaps or perhaps not.

In any case, this is a creditable job and despite a few editing issues it is pretty well done. RJB.
