Über den Autor

Charles Haine has been a bicycle mechanic for over a decade. He learned to fix bikes at a bicycle co-operative at Oberlin College. He is currently the chairman of the Bicycle Kitchen, a non-profit bicycle education space in Los Angeles, California. He has taught beginning and advanced bicycle mechanics to countless people.

This is a fun and informative book written by an author who clearly knows his material front to back. Yet it is also very readable, not too long, with frequent photographs guiding you through the concise and well-written text. The book takes you on an eye-opening tour of urban bicycle subculture but it also tells you more than you need to know about maintaining and customizing your own bike. If you intend to do more bicycling in your city, get a good lock, some bright blinky lights, and buy this book.

This is a fun and quick book about urban biking with plenty of nice pictures as well. I've been cycling for the past 30+ years so there wasn't a lot of new info here but if you are just now becoming a cycling enthusiast this would be a valuable resource. There is a pervasive attitude throughout this book that the most expensive gear may not always be the best choice - so get sturdy mid range bike, learn how to modify it and fix it yourself - and jam econo.

I'm buying my first commuter bike and wanted to know enough to confidently walk into a bike shop without being overwhelmed. This book gave me a great foundation on the structure of bikes, how to pick certain features, what to look for when buying a new or used bike. It's also gonna come in handy when I need to get down and dirty and fix the bike. Great tips throughout, although most of this info could probably be found piecemeal on the internet. There's also a section on building a fixie and converting to a fixie, if that's your hipster perogative. Great buy!
