The book is not always accurate and adresses some points which are certainly not typically dutch. And I think that the author sometimes takes things just a little too far and makes a charicature out of his descriptions. I also agree that it focussus mainly on Amsterdam, but the author does not make a secret of that.
Despite these facts, it gives very good information about dutch culture and I would advice it to everybody who is planning on staying there for a longer time.
I am dutch myself and found myself laughing loud when reading it. The main reason being that I was confronted with some silly, but lovable, features I know very well.

Being Dutch and not having lived there for 25 years, I had to get this book when I heard of it. It was money well spend. I laughed so hard sometimes that I cried. I bought a copy for my mother who still lives in the Netherlands, she didn't think it was very funny, but I told her that the truth hurts sometimes. I still go back "home" on a regular basis with my family and after reading this book I look at my fellow Dutchmen through different glasses. My husband is American, he read the book and says that he sees some of those things in me, so even after 25 years I'm still Dutch and proud of it. The book is great fun, but you have to have a sense of humor and take it with a grain of salt. I recommend the book to anyone who is Dutch or who knows someone Dutch.

This book was given to me by my Dutch boyfriend...and after being to the Netherlands a number of times, I can really appreciate the customs and sayings. Check out the Dutch/English synonyms in the back!!

Ja, natürlich ist es überspitzt, doch ein guter Einstieg

hilariously on target, amusingly accurate caricature

A lot of rubbish

Hahaha...I didn't know we, Dutchmen, were so funny. But by reading the book, I could only agree with all the strange and odd habits we have....and I also laughed more than healthy!
