First off, I used to love Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme thrillers, The Coffin Dancer" is still one of my favorite books of this genre. I was sleeping with the light on when I read "The Bone Collector", I never saw the turn in "TCD" coming and I was at the verge of tears at the end of the third book because I thought beyond better logic that Deaver had killed his main character off. I never cared too much for Deaver's other books, they have never been able to live up to the Rhyme/Sachs series.
But now the magic seems to be gone there as well. Sachs and Rhyme, the two characters that I really care about and that were the reason I still bought this book after the disappointing "The Vanished Man" are merely side characters, the forensic element, the puzzle is almost gone and the twists are easy to see through from a mile away. Yes, there were two twists, but they are in no way on the same level as they were in earlier books. The whole book seems to be homage to Harlem more than anything else. While I enjoyed reading about Harlem and its history, it is not what I am looking for when I read a thriller, there are better books about socio-cultural structures in Harlem and by more qualified writers than this one. It is just the same old formula over and over again, he should try to come up with something new once in a while when it comes to the thriller element and not try to make up for the lack of suspense by getting lost in the side-story like Chinese immigrants, magic or Harlem.
