The Torment of Others is a salutary reminder what an asset to British crime fiction Val McDermid is. Her first books with journalist Lindsay Gordon as heroine gave hints of the talent that was to mature so impressively--and the subsequent series with the resourceful private eye Kate Brannigan demonstrated a sharper eye for the harder edges of society. But the best was just around the corner. McDermid's third sequence with clinical psychologist profiler Tony Hill was something of a quantum leap: as well as forging one of the most memorable figures in contemporary crime fiction with mildly eccentric Hill, McDermid added a degree of psychological acuity that made the earlier books seem like warm-ups for the main event.

The latest outing for Hill, The Torment of Others, also features McDermid's other richly realised creation, DCI Carol Jordan, and the author carries her familiar protagonists into truly unsettling new areas. This time, Hill is coping with a return to practical clinical profiling after a frustrating spell as an academic. And there's another major complication for him: his ex-partner Carol Jordan is no longer sure she wishes to be in charge of a team after the brutal sexual assault she suffered during undercover work. But she is persuaded to do so--and realises that one of her main tasks will be to create a cohesive unit.

A dead woman discovered in a sexual position on a bloody mattress, appears to be the victim of a killer the team knows all about: the monstrous Derek Tyler, who had carried out similarly bloody work two years before. However, forensics have landed Tyler in a mental institution--does this mean that Hill and Jordan are searching for a murderer who is copying the techniques of the psychotic Tyler?

While this may not be the best starting point for those new to McDermid, enthusiasts will find all the key elements are firmly and satisfyingly in place. --Barry Forshaw

*Starred Review* In the latest in the series starring forensic psychiatrist and criminal profiler Dr. Tony Hill (which has become the basis of a TV series on BBC America), Hill, finishing out a teaching appointment at St. Andrews, finds himself relieved to leave academia for a real case. The Bradfield Metropolitan Police once again seek his advice, this time regarding two missing children, a murdered seven-year-old kidnapped 15 months earlier, and a newly kidnapped eight-year-old. At the same time, a murder victim is discovered, killed in the same fashion as the victims of a man who has been in a mental institution for two years. McDermid is unusual in her ability to keep the suspense high while constructing social mysteries that are far-ranging in their implications--for example, she touches on the societal forces at work today (such as the lack of true neighborhoods) that make it easier for kids to be victimized. One of the most compelling features of this latest entry is the torment that returning Bradfield DCI Carol Jordan (brutally assaulted in the last mystery) feels as she and her team track down the current murderer while she struggles with the memory shards from the last case. McDermid brings to her mysteries an unusual capacity for compassion, both for victims and for the detectives whose lives are shattered tracking down the killers. Connie Fletcher

Ein absolut packender Thriller! Wieder mit dabei sind die Kommissarin Carol Jordan und der Profiler Tony Hill. Carol versucht gleich zwei Fälle zu lösen: den eines verschwundenen Jungens und der grausame Mord an einer Prostituierten. Währenddessen ermittelt Tony auf psychologischer Ebene – durchaus faszinierend was er für Einblicke in die Psyche des Täters gewinnt!
Bis das Buch so richtig spannend wird dauert es eine Weile, aber dann lässt es einen nicht mehr los. Ich habe die 2. Hälfte verschlungen und das Ende gar nicht abwarten können. Auf jeden Fall ist das Buch nichts für schwache Nerven, es gibt teilweise schockierende Beschreibungen bei denen ich froh war dass ich nicht alle Details verstand. So gut ist mein Englisch dann doch nicht!

Ein Zufallskauf... Nach den ersten Seiten jedoch zieht die Autorin einen sofort in ihren Bann... Das Spiel mit Macht... Das Spiel mit manipulierbaren "schwachen" Menschen... Dazu die Ermittler, jeder mit seinen eigenen inneren Problemen, Konflikten... Die sie nicht zu Hause lassen, sondern zum Motor ihrer Arbeit werden. Dazu ein ungewöhnlicher Profiler, der seinen Patienten nur so nah sein kann... weil er ihnen so ähnlich ist ??? Aber privat ebenso unfähig, eine "normale" Beziehung zu einer Frau aufzubauen.

Ich bin gespannt, ob die Vorgänger zu diesem Buch ebenso spannend und auch lehrreich über die menschlichen Abgründe erzählt. Ein Zufallskauf, der sich für mich gelohnt hat.
