Despite the period setting and constant violence, the story captures and sustains the listener's interest as the Musketeers vanquish the villains. Michael York reads superbly, his rich baritone voice giving each role convincing clarity. The audio format is particularly suited to the tale. The production quality is excellent. Recommended for general collections.

Grade 6 Up-With swelling musical background, the clash of swordplay, and the occasional thump of a head being cut off, the St. Charles Players bring back the feeling of radio theater in their rendition of the classic tale by Alexandre Dumas. The players' voices emit every nuance required to let listeners experience the swashbuckling deeds of the famous heroic threesome and the boy called D'Artagnan who wants to join their ranks. When the young man arrives in Paris with the wish to enlist with the King's Musketeers, he finds himself challenged to three duels in his first afternoon in the city by men who turn out to be Porthos, Aramis, and Athos-the Three Musketeers. Instead of fighting against them, the twists of fate have D'Artagnan battling for them against the evil Cardinal Richelieu's guards. After demonstrating his worth with a sword, D'Artagnan proves more of his mettle by journeying to England to foil a plot to embarrass France's Queen Anne, the former Anne of Austria. D'Artagnan saves his queen but loses the woman he loves, so he seeks vengeance and, in turn, instills himself firmly in the ranks of the Musketeers. The flavor of the original is evident even though this abridged version includes only highlights in its retelling.

Exciting But Repetitive 10. Januar 2000

This is an exciting book that unfortunately feels formulamatic at times. Maybe that is because it was produced as a serialized novel originally. It can have that "find out what our heros are up to next issue" feel.

Overall it is fast paced, but long. I liked the action sequences and the author's creation of distinct personalities for his heros. While I had to read this over a long period of time, I found I enjoyed it most when I could put in a couple of hours at a time and fully submerge myself in the author's world. I would recommend picking this up for a vacation book or if you know you'll be able to keep at it night after night.

The author uses a convincing historical and period backdrop for his tale. It feels real which aids the story. The romantic nature of his heros leads to a wonderful story of comradship and loyalty, good versus evil, etc. Many things to like, but I did not find it deserves quite as lofty a pedestal as most of these other reviewers do.

Über das Werk "Three musketeers" muss man nicht viel sagen. Es ist und bleibt ein Klassiker, obwohl es kein typischer Klassiker ist. Einfach zu lesen, äußerst unterhaltsam und sehr spannend!

Nennenswert ist jedoch der Zusatz "Wadsworth Collection". Ich habe das Buch als Hardcover und in der Penguin Edition gelesen. Inhaltlich steht die Wadsworth Collection den beiden anderen in nichts nach, im Gegenteil! Es gibt eine zusätzliche, mehrseitige und sehr informative Einführung sowie Erläuterung zu vielen Worten am Ende des Buches. (sehr nützlich wenn man "The picture of Dorian Gray" liest - Wadsworth ist auch hier sehr zu empfehlen! Picture of Dorian Gray (Wadsworth Collection))

Darüber hinaus ist der Buchrücken wesentlich flexibler, was das Lesen sehr angenehm macht. Man muss nicht das Buch "aufbiegen", um auch die innersten Wörter lesen zu können.

Considering how many books I read per month, I am staggered that it took me 32 years to finally get around to reading the Three Musketeers. This is an excellent book and one of the best pieces of literature that I have ever got my hands on. I was totally gripped from start to finish.

D'Artagnan goes to Paris to seek his fortune and hopefully to join the coveted King's Musketeers. No sooner is he in the capital than he is fighting a duel with the Musketeers and this brings him to their notice. Since there are no vacancies in the elite group, D'Artagnan is put in the Kings Guards and promised a place in the Musketeers when a vacancy arises. Despite this though, D'Artagnan and the three Musketeers, Porthos, Aramis and Athos, are soon inseparable and are soon getting into fights and adventures, especially with the dangerous Cardinal Richeleau and the deadly but mysterious Milady. But with people like the Duke of Buckingham, Lord De Winter and Monsieur De Trevielle, the group soon triumph and get the girl...

A wonderfully written, absorbing story and I can't wait for part 2 in the Musketeers trilogy.
