As the Tao itself, Schulman's book offers the novice as well as the master greater levels of insight and inspiration with each read. A true celebration of the irony and paradox of life along the Way. Schulman doesn't fall prey to the folly of teaching; he merely (ironic grin) shares and knows that the student who is ready will learn and understand. Bravo!
I don't pretend to be any small expert on Taoist thought or tradition, but maybe that's beside the point. Smullyan's prose is razor sharp, witty, irreverent (yes, again), and FUN. Hey, for once, we can read the work of a mathematical logician that is FUN. That alone is worth the money twice over.
Let us hope that he writes more like this as I enjoy so much his calibre of thinking, no matter how child-like he wants to be - the more the better!
If I ever end up on a desert island...his book will be one of my top five. I have learned so much beyond his words by reading them.
Smullyan's approach to Daoism is very personal and very Western. It lacks self-examiniation and provides only a superficial perspective of Daoism.
Smullylan writes more about Zen than Daoism, without making any distinctions (the two do certainly share much, but they are still very distinct systems of thought). He makes broad, sterotypical characterizations about Eastern thought, without realizing that the view that he is claiming is "Eastern" is little more than a projection of Western ideas on a foriegn culture. His views reflect the new age of "orientalism" which proposes some fantastic Eastern philosophy as the solution for Western problems, without recognizing that Eastern thought has its own conflicts and dilemmas.
The Dao (as with Zen) is a concept foriegn to most Western philosophical discourse. It makes a tempting empty canvas on which Westernerers frequently paint their own ideas. The whole point of Daoism, though, is that the canvas should remain empty.
The book is interesting as a collection of essays and does offer some interesting criticisms of Western thought (though only after presenting them as espoused by "straw men" who can be easily dismissed). It does not inform the reader in a substantive way about the ideas proposed and espoused in the texts of _Dao De Jing_ or in _Zhuang Zi_.
