A serial killer is on the loose in Boston. The victims are killed in a particularly nasty way: cut with a scalpel on the stomach, the intestines and uterus removed, and then the throat slashed. The killer obviously has medical knowledge and has been dubbed "the Surgeon" by the media. Detective Thomas Moore and his partner Rizzoli of the Boston Homicide Unit have discovered something that makes this case even more chilling. Years ago in Savannah a serial killer murdered in exactly the same way. He was finally stopped by his last victim who shot him as he tried to cut her. That last victim is Dr Catherine Cordell, who now works as a cardiac surgeon at one of Boston's prestigious hospitals. As the murders continue, it becomes obvious that the killer is drawing closer and closer to Dr Cordell, who is becoming so frightened that she is virtually unable to function. But she is the only person who can help the police catch this copycat killer. Or is it a copycat? To complicate matters even further, Detective Moore, often referred to as Saint Thomas as he continues to mourn the loss of his wife, is getting emotionally involved with the doctor.

Spannender Thriller 17. September 2004

Vor einigen Jahren hat eine grausame Mordserie Savannah in Georgia erschüttert. Ein brutaler Mörder, den die Presse wegen seiner chirurgischen Präzision "The Surgeon" getauft hat, tötete und verstümmelte mehrere junge Frauen. Eines seiner Opfer, die Ärztin Dr. Catherine Cordell, schaffte es, sich zu befreien und den Mörder zu töten.
Heute: Dr. Cordell ist nach dem Angriff auf ihr Leben nach Boston gezogen und hat ein neues Leben begonnen. Da beginnt in Boston eine neue Mordserie. Das Vorgehen des Killers erinnert bis ins Detail an das von "The Surgeon". Bereits einige Frauen sind dem Mörder zum Opfer gefallen und auch Dr. Cordell gerät wieder ins Fadenkreuz des düsteren Killers. Die Polizei steht vor einem Rätsel: wer ist der geheimnisvolle Mann, der einen totgeglaubten Mörder imitiert?

Ein guter Thriller ist der ehemaligen Internistin Tess Gerritsen mit "The Surgeon" gelungen. Die Spannung wird bis zum Ende hin durchgehalten, obwohl sich Thriller-Freunde die Auflösung des Falles wohl schon vor dem Ende haben denken können. Für schwache Nerven ist "The Surgeon" allerdings nicht geeignet, da die Beschreibung von ekligen medizinischen Details zartbesaitete Gemüter leicht irritieren könnten. Einziger Kritikpunkt aus meiner Sicht ist die Tatsache, dass sich manche Passagen etwas in die Länge ziehen, obwohl die Handlung dadurch wenig vorangebracht wird.
Auf jeden Fall ein lesenswertes Buch, dass sich auch im englischen Original gut verstehen lässt.

I looked forward to reading this new thriller by Tess Gerritsen, however, was very disappointed. The author formerly wrote very good intense medical thrillers like "Bloodline", however, this one is mediocre:
The usual contents: A "Stunningly beautiful woman doctor" and a "Stunningly handsome detective" have a stunningly intense love-air. There is a villain of course, and a happy-end. That's it.
Much action, much blood and gore, but not the usual good quality work Mrs. Gerritsen used to produce.
Sorry, but I was very disappointed. You can do better, Mrs Gerritsen !

This is the first book I read written by Tess and I find it absolutely extraordinary. I could not sleep at night (partly because I could imagine the surgeon standing behind my door and partly because I could not wait to continue my reading). It gave me chicken skin all over my body...
