An American who later married into the Spanish nobility, the author began her career as a "queen of international society" by working as a decoder for the OSS. Her book describes how she (nee Aline Griffith) was recruited by the OSS while working as a model at Hattie Carnegie's, trained in espionage, and sent to Madrid. Once there, says Romanones, she decoded secret messages, organized a chain of women spies, and mingled among the cream of Spanish society to ferret out information about Nazis and German sympathizers. The author also details her lifestyle among the rich and famous. Indeed, so active was her social life that one wonders how she had any time for business. One year of adventure

Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
When this book first came out I read it with the eagerness of a vicarious adventurer. Now, many years later, I read it again. Yes, it is dated and is pretty unbelievable, but still a fun adventure. It could be said that it is a female James Bond story. Our book club is discussing the book, and I am sure it will be a fun meeting.

I loved this book. Most importantly, anyone reading it will understand that SOCIALIZING WAS THE JOB Aline Griffith had to do. I was upset to read the Editorial review from the Library Journal where the author of the editorial sneers at the fact that the former Ms. Griffith was socializing so much in Madrid during her assignment.
I lived in Madrid thirty five years after the time the Countess recounts. Her account and vivid description unveiled for me a city gone for ever, one however, clearly discernible when I was there. Thank you Countess de Romanones for this wonderful treat!

Truth or fiction

Aline Griffith wants to join her brothers in helping her country during the war. But she's female and not old enough for the few professions that allow women to help. She complains to a man she meets on a double date and the next thing she knows she's on her way to be trained as a spy.
Sent to Spain to learn the local gossip is the easy part. Telling who is on her side is the hard part.
This book is labeled as non-fiction, but I found that really hard to believe. There are quite a few critics out there saying why they think the book is real or not. But my personal observation begins in the forward. The author freely admits that she's changed circumstances or people to make the story more interesting or to hide the identity of someone.
But if you take the story as fiction it's a very fun and entertaining read. It sheds a little light on to how the people lived during the 40s and keeps you glued the entire book. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it. You might not believe it's non-fiction, but you will enjoy it.
