Can there be any doubt that turning the inimitable private detective Isaac Bell into a spy chaser is going to be good for this series? I think The Spy rings the bell in making for a more entertaining story than merely tracking down brainy, greedy thieves as occurred in The Chase and The Wrecker. I especially enjoyed a deeper sense of the international diplomatic and naval tensions in the pre-World War I era. The references to developing technology are also very interesting, even if they concern ways of doing things that are now long obsolete.
The story was also enhanced by having a deeper nautical theme than the earlier two Isaac Bell novels. Mr. Cussler's imagination seems to be artificially restrained when he's stuck on land.
The ultimate identify of the master spy is held back until late in the story, which added a lot more entertaining suspense for me.
My main regret was that the book's action wasn't as concentrated as is desirable for a thriller. If the book had been a little more in that direction, I would have given it a standing ovation. As it was, I think I can hear a the sound of bells tinkling as more entertainment awaits us while Isaac Bell attempts to save the world in the future.

Gives good atmospherics of the era, interesting plot, sometimes perhaps at the edge of plausibility. Very picturesque style of writing. Easy literature.

There is no real story behind this book. The characters are all boring and the story is very very unreal. After reading about 30 pages I gave up and put his book down.
