'Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains' These are the famous opening words of a treatise that has not ceased to stir vigorous debate since its first publication in 1762. Rejecting the view that anyone has a natural right to wield authority over others, Rousseau argues instead for a pact, or 'social contract', that should exist between all the citizens of a state and that should be the source of sovereign power. From this fundamental premise, he goes on to consider issues of liberty and law, freedom and justice, arriving at a view of society that has seemed to some a blueprint for totalitarianism, to others a declaration of democratic principles.
Synopsis
"Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains." These are the famous opening words of a treatise which, from the French Revolutionary terror to the Dictatorship of the Proletariat, has been interpreted as a blueprint for totalitarianism. But in "The Social Contract" Rousseau (1712-1778) was at pains to stress the connection between liberty and law, freedom and justice. Arguing that the ruler is the people's agent, not its master, he claimed that laws derived from the people's general will. Yet in preaching subservience to the impersonal state he came close to defining freedom as the recognition of necessity. Rousseau's powerful treatise expresses views on the rights, liberty and equality of all people. It remains a classic of political theory and one of the most influential works of abstract political thought in the Western tradition.

Rousseau's "Contract Social" has originated many false beliefs that are, though sometimes unwittingly, still even entertained today, such as the "Noble Savage", the originary state of the individual (allegedly in a condition of primordial solitude and self-relaince), a social bond or contract (the historicity of which is extremely suspect) by which separate individuals agree to form a social union (a society or polity) and the gross fallacy of the innate goodness of man. This work, the product of a morbidly paranoid Genevan who had the callousness and audacity to leave his five children abandoned in an orphanage, owes its impact mainly to the fire of its eloquence rather than to any of its ideas, which are of no lasting merit.
