    Kurzbeschreibung

Sometimes the past just won't stay buried.

DC Gary Goodhew is on a pub crawl when he smells smoke. He rushes to the scene and finds a raging house fire, too far gone to stop. The blaze leaves two corpses, but a young boy—who was also inside—is now missing.

As the investigation deepens, it becomes clear that the boy's mother, Kimberley, knows much more than she is letting on. With the clock ticking on a child's life, Goodhew begins to sift through the ruins of Kimberley's past—and uncovers an unsettling picture of deceit, murder, and accelerating danger. Fans of Deborah Crombie and Elizabeth George will relish this gripping page-turner.

    4.0 von 5 Sternen A really good mystery 21. November 2013
Von I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I love a good mystery and The Siren is a good mystery. This book kept me entranced and interested throughout. I wasn't sure who the perpetrator in the story was and the ones that I guessed were completely wrong. There is foreshadowing in the book and it adds to the mystery of what's going on. The book is told from the 3rd perspective, which is not my favorite, but it worked well with this story. I really liked the character of DC Goodhew. He sounds very schmexy and because he is a police officer, he would be a great knight in shining armor. The thing about this story that was good was that you didn't know who to trust and the main character Kimberly was a puzzle.

The story is well written and is engaging. The author is British so there is British slang and quite a lot of British geography. I've never been so it was hard to visualize some of the areas that were described. But, it's just like every place in a book that's based on a real location - you have to use your imagination. I've read other British books before so I am used to the verbiage and slang. For anyone that hasn't read it or isn't familiar with it, it may be a bit distracting. I am looking forward to reading other DC Goodhew mysteries if they are anywhere near as good as this one.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The past trails into the future, too 27. April 2011
    Von E. Crowley - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
"A fragment of her life was appearing on the television....she saw the wench, and the wreck of Nick's car that now hung from its hook. The car she had last seen when that same stretch of the Mediterranean sea had swallowed it....' The vehicle was recovered last week after some divers reported that it appeared to contain human remains....The victim is named as former Cambridge man Nicholas Lewton, who had been living and working in Cartagena until his disappearance almost three years ago....this death is being treated as suspicious.' "

Kimberly Guyver had truly believed her life of running to be over. But that filler on the news showed her, again, that she was never going to be safe. The last time she ran, she didn't have Riley. Now when she runs away she'll have a toddler to protect. Rachel Golinski, her closest friend, saw the same news report. Kimberly and Rachel had escaped from Spain together, had found homes where their back gardens touched, had believed they had outrun the danger, and had prepared contingency plans in case they had not. Rachel was better prepared than Kimberly; Kimberly needed more than wanted security and stability. Riley deserved nothing less. Now Kimberly leaves Riley in Rachel's care as she begins to erase her life.

DC Gary Goodhew is on a pub crawl with an old friend when he smells smoke. As he runs toward the burning building, it virtually explodes. No one could survive such a fire. The house belongs to Rachel and Goodhew soon learns that Riley Guyver was with her. As the Cambridge police investigates the motive behind what is definitely an arson, Kimberly is distraught yet unwilling to give the police any details regarding Rachel or their time in Spain.

When firefighters find only one set of remains, that of an adult female, it is obvious that although Rachel died in the blaze, Riley Guyver has disappeared.

Kimberly Guyver is not as helpless as the police first believed. There is something about Kimberly that does not ring true. Goodhew, on enforced off duty status, earns Kimberly's trust but is she using him to make her story more plausible?

The word "siren" has multiple meanings. It is the definition of the device that creates an unmistakable noise that signals a warning. In Greek mythology, sirens are sea nymphs who use their beautiful voices to lure sailors to their deaths on the rocky shores of their island. And, the term is sometimes used to describe a beautiful and seductive woman. As the title, the three definitions apply. Goodhew hears sirens as he runs toward Rachel's burning house. Kimberly may have been the beautiful woman who played a role in Nick Lewton's death on the rocks off the coast of Spain. Kimberly is a beautiful and seductive woman who may be dangerous to all who fall under her spell.

THE SIREN is an impossible book to put down.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Gary Goodhew Thriller 18. Januar 2014
Von Barbara J. Mitchell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
This e-book is a slightly confusing mystery but I was impressed by Bruce's ability to present a character in a couple paragraphs so well that you feel like you know that person's type. The exceptions are the main characters, DC Gary Goodhew and Kimberly Guyver, mother of a missing toddler.

The story begins with Kimberly in her kitchen finding a matchbook with the name and logo of Rita Club on it. She burns the matchbook, then turns to take care of her son Riley. On TV a news flash shows a winch lifting a car from the Mediterranean Sea. She recognizes it, and immediately meets her friend Rachel to discuss the finding of Nick Lewton's car with Nick's remains inside. They decide they must leave town for a while but separately because they're in danger and so is Riley. Rachel takes him so that Kim can have a little time to prepare to go.

Kim always spends a lot of time looking at Mill Road Cemetery which is right next to her apartment in Cambridge. Rachel lives within view with her husband Stefan Golinski, a jealous and violent man. She is planning to leave him. That afternoon their house burns. Rachel's body is found inside but not Riley or Stefan. The search begins.

Goodhew is a fascinating character. He is single but very close to his grandmother. Lives across from police station. He's relatively new to force, but his boss has been watching him carefully and trusts him. Goodhew has exactly what his boss looks for in a detective. I loved following him and trying to figure out what he was thinking. His insights are amazing and yet not unbelievingly so. I like this guy.

Twists and turns lead the reader this way and that, but nothing really makes sense until near the end when all becomes clear. Meanwhile, you worry - where is Riley? Is he safe? Will they find him in time?

    Highly recommended

I adored this book! It was the book I needed to read at the right time. Now, I didn't read the first book, so I was worried about being lost. I had no problem following the book and getting lost IN it! This is a book I never wanted to put down!
There isn't too much I can say about this book.... Reason being, I will give too much away! But I will try my best to tell you what I really liked about this book!
There was just enough going on in this book that is was not only easy to follow but hard to put down. The mystery behind everything kept me wanting more. I thought about this book throughout the day when I wasn't reading it. I kept running possible scenarios through my head, wondering where the story was going to take me.
The characters are wonderful. They are perfectly portrayed. I was able to feel and think just like each one of them. That can be rare in a book. I didn't identify with them necessarily, but I could identify them. I hope that makes sense.
This book is for the person who likes intrigue and mystery. It is a wonderful change from the adult contemporary or romance books many read. It is definitely something to pick up if you need a cure from a book hangover, although you may get a slight one from this too!!!

    5.0 von 5 Sternen Leann's Review of the Siren 20. November 2013

A truly great read. Bruce captures my complete attention again with her DC Gary Goodhew mysteries. I really enjoyed the new characters introduced into this novel. I really think it built the story line.

I love the development in Gary's character. I haven't figured out exactly where Marks stands yet...? But I do enjoy his character as well. I really enjoyed the story line of this book. I love when a series can bring a second or even third or fourth book into a series and stay with the general character, but comprise a completely new story plot or line.

I really enjoyed this read. This series is really climbing to the top of my must read pile. And of course I love a good mystery that can surprise me. Can't wait to dive into the next installment of this series!
