As Anna talked, a strange change came over Morden's face. The muscles went slack, his carefully composed expression melting away.
He reached into the pocket of his jumpsuit, and she realized he was going to pull out the PPG. As the PPG came clear of the pocket and began to rise, she shoved him hard. The gun went off with a reverberating blast. She lost her balance, heard rocks falling, and then a flash, and she hit the cave floor. She covered her head with her arms and tucked her body into a ball. It was like being an ant in the center of the bowling pins when God hits a strike.
She was in total blackness. She groped for her light, and shone it toward where Morden had been standing. He looked as if he had been picked up and thrown at the cave wall. He was twisted up against it on his side, the jumpsuit over his chest fluttering with quick, shallow breaths. His right hand still gripped the PPG...

I have watched all of the Babylon 5 episodes, collected most of videos, and even started reading the comics when they first came out. Now I am working on the books. I just wanted to point out that this book is a must for all serious B5 fans. The TV series leaves you lacking in what happened to the Icarus when it reached Z'Ha'dum and this book clearly gives those answers. I also appreciated the author's look into the past life of the character Morden. It is nice to see that his life was very different from that which he leads in the TV series. The book was well written and kept me entertained throughout. Kudos to the author...

Pünktlich zum Erscheinen der 2. Staffel von B5 auf DVD werden zwei der wichtigsten Bücher neuaufgelegt, die den Handlungszeitraum (Staffel 1 und 2) begleiten. Voraussetzung ist eine Kenntnis der Saga um B5.
Leider wurden auch dieser Roman nie ins Deutsche übersetzt, was aber niemanden abschrecken sollte, es lohnt sicht!!

Hier eine Beurteilung von Marc Friese:
"The Shadow within" setzt in vielerlei Hinsicht neue Maßstäbe. Nach JMS' eigener Aussage ist der Roman fast 100% canon (sein genauer Wortlaut waren 90%). Der einzige Roman dem er tatsächliche 100% zuspricht ist "To dream in the City of Sorrows". Des weiteren ist die Autorin, Jeanne Cavelos, wesentlich stärker als die bisherigen Autoren in die Serie involviert, da sie erstens für Dell, den Verlag der die Romane in den USA herausbrachte, die Babylon 5-Romane in ihrer Funktion als Editor bearbeitete und sie sich zweitens selbst als Fan der Serie bezeichnet. Zu beidem kamen noch einige klärende Gespräche zwischen ihr und JMS hinzu, in der er sie auf kleine Ungereimtheiten hinwies. Hinterher sagte JMS aber, dass der Roman am wenigsten seine Beachtung brauchte, da Cavelos die Show wirklich kannte. Damit ist der Roman nicht einfach nur canon, sondern erzählt einen wirklich wichtigen Teil der Babylon 5-Chronologie, nämlich die Vorgeschichte, den Flug und die Landung der Ikarus auf Z'ha'dum.
Die Geschichte, die Cavelos spinnt, ist sehr spannend, interessant und flüssig zu lesen. Die Charaktere sind sehr gut erfasst, wenn auch vielleicht mancher Leser damit Probleme haben könnte mit Morden im Verlauf des Romans Sympathien aufzubauen.
Fazit: "The Shadow within" ist ein toller Roman und gehört zur Pflichtlektüre eines jeden Babylon 5-Fans.

This was the first and so far only B5 book I read, but I've already ordered more by this author. I needed two days to finish it and could have done so in one, if I hadn't had other things to do, like sleeping, which is really nasty at times like that.
The style of writing is great, just as I like it, with enugh lines that stick to the memory. Story and atmosphere of the book are also just fine, and the characters are well developed and hard not to like. Another great thing is that the author actually knows the series and the characters, which shows in all the little details, like Morden's pendant or the snow globe Delenn broke in 'Shadow Dancing'. Of course, if you know the series you already know how this story is going to end, but for me the only problem that caused me was that it broke my heart. And I will never look at Morden the same way again.

save your money
Since the outcome is known, not much in plot surprises. But what's disappointing is that there's not much revelations on the characters neither.

Asome story about what really happened to Sheriden's wife.
