Kurzbeschreibung

THE WORLD HAS FORGOTTEN THE TRUE NATURE OF TERROR. IT’S ABOUT TO BE REMINDED.

A military revolt in southeastern Russia puts a former hard-line Soviet leader in command of a ballistic missile submarine and its arsenal of nuclear weapons. His goal: re-ignite the communist revolution, and recapture the might and glory of the fallen Soviet Union. Without warning, Russia, Japan, and the United States become hostages in a scheme of international nuclear blackmail. When the warheads start falling and people begin dying, no one can pretend that it’s a bluff.

As the earth rushes toward extinction, a lone U.S. Navy warship must penetrate the Siberian ice pack to destroy the submarine before it can destroy the world.

It may already be too late.

“A truly spellbinding tale of intrigue... brilliantly executed.” — CLIVE CUSSLER, International bestselling author of ‘THE SPY,’ and ‘RAISE THE TITANIC’

“A page turning, sip-from-a-fire-hose thriller in the world of underwater ballistic missiles and rogue former Soviet states.” — JAMES W. HUSTON, New York Times bestselling author of ‘FALCON SEVEN,’ and ‘SECRET JUSTICE’

“Jeff Edwards takes his readers to the brink of Armageddon and beyond!” — JOE BUFF, Bestselling author of ‘SEAS OF CRISIS,’ and ‘CRUSH DEPTH’

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another chilling techno-thriller from an author who--quite frankly--cannot write fast ENOUGH... 7. März 2011
Von Jeff Edwards - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
When I finished Mr. Edwards first book ('Torpedo') I felt that I had read literally the BEST, most realistic techno-thriller of the previous decade. I've read quite a few books since then, and I maintain that my initial opinion was right on. Nobody can really write with the sense of immediacy and urgency like someone who has literally 'been there, done that'. 'Torpedo' was and still is one of my all-time favorite military thrillers. In a word: the book is simply Brilliant.

I have waited--sometimes patiently--most often impatiently--for Mr. Edwards follow-up. I KNEW immediately that the book had a LOT to live up to...and sometimes that either can work for you or against. In this case, I was worried that with his first novel being SO good, trying to live up to or making the attempt to out DO it seemed difficult at best...at least it seemed so to me. I am thrilled to say that 'The Seventh Angel' lived up to ALL of my expectations and exceeded them from beginning to end.

The prologue itself was a nail-biter--what a great way to start this story off...and it only got better. Some of the subject matter in the book isn't easy to deal with. Face it: its easier knowing that despite the threat of hostility during the Cold War, the Soviet Union had MUCH better control over its own stockpile of nuclear weapons and weapons-grade material than it has since its collapse in the early 90's. The Cold, hard truth of the matter is chilling to say the least: There is SO MUCH of this material and weapons either not being properly cared for and watched over or even accounted FOR that it ought to give us ALL nightmares for years to come. WHO is keeping track of it all--and--keep in mind, there is a LOT to keep track of. What could possibly go wrong? Well, I think we all KNOW what potentially could go wrong...however most of us refuse to allow our imaginations to travel down such a frightening road. Fortunately for us though, Mr. Edwards has put it to serious thought. I certainly hope that our military leaders and Government have, too.

Honestly, this topic desperately NEEDS to be addressed, and the sooner the better. It probably is--I take comfort in the knowledge that our Military rarely fills us in on their plans before carrying out anything so dangerous. However, within the pages of 'The Seventh Angel' you will find an all-too plausible scenario which quite frankly scares the absolute crap outta me. It is written with skill, and as the tension is carefully wratched up, moment by moment, you can tell the attention to detail is something that, while necessary to the story, never gets in the way of the story being seriously compelling at the same time. 'The Seventh Angel' is everything 'Torpedo' was and more...and I mean that in the best way possible. Once again, I will have what will seem like an eternity to wait for yet another follow-up, but I take comfort in that at least I'll know the wait will have been entirely worth it in the end. Kudos once again to Mr. Edwards. Yet ANOTHER Brilliant thriller written incredibly well--and much, MUCH better than Clancy has produced in a long, LONG time.

FYI--while sharing the same name, I am NOT the same Jeff Edwards who wrote this book...although I certainly WISH I were good enough to have done so.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Jeff's Done It - AGAIN! 8. März 2011
Von Michael D. Fisher - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I just finished reading the book and I have to say it is GOOD.

As a dyed-in-the-wool Milporn Geek, this book fell right in line with my expectations. I was drawn through the book as opposed to being pushed.. my way of putting the fact I didn't want to put it down. Work and life in general saw that I had to, occasionally, but I'd fight my way back to it - ASAP.

Mr. Edwards did a great job of drawing the scenes in my minds-eye and it was all very vivid and UNDERSTANDABLE. I enjoy the technology immensely and would have enjoyed a little more techno-in-my thriller but overall it was very well handled.

GOOD JOB, Mr. Edwards!

May I call you Jeff now?

3.0 von 5 Sternen An enjoyable guilty pleasure 31. Oktober 2011
Von Nate74 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

First, I enjoyed this book. A lot. I also enjoyed the first one, Sea of Shadows though one needn't have read the first book; they are pretty standalone. The author has a clean and direct style that makes it an easy read. I had a very high pages/minute rate which allowed me to really stay wrapped up in the story. The pacing is also fast as each scene/chapter is rarely more than a handful of pages. Now, these would not necessarily be good things, but for this book and its subject matter and being a military-techno-thriller, it is perfect.

In the interest of full disclosure, I, like the author, am a former technician in the US Navy. I explained to a friend that this book really scratched itches I didn't know I had and was every bit the guilty pleasure that a bodice-ripper can be to others.

The action is intense, the characters are well-drawn and the stakes are high but not implausibly so. That last part can get a little sketchy. The only real complaint I could offer is that some of the situations are quite contrived. I will explain briefly in the least spoilery way I can: In this book, as in the first one mentioned earlier, situations conspire to make one Captain and his amazing Destroyer to save the day. Great storytelling no doubt, and I loved every minute of it. However, where I found a part of my brain nagging me was just at how unlikely and forced it was. The author clearly loves and knows US destroyers but I believe the capabilities of our hero's ship is greatly exaggerated and that the story would have been better served--and more believable/realistic--had a submarine been used instead. It is clear the author knew that as well as he created a way to prevent any submarine from being sent in, leaving it to our hero-captain and his stealthy destroyer to come to the rescue.

I read this on my Kindle and had no issues with formatting, etc.

I will be purchasing the author's next work when available.

with good characters and a good story resolution. I enjoyed the action and the technical story line although I have no idea how accurate it actually is, it seems very much to-date.

Book 2 of my Jeff Edwards marathon. Easy read for a navy and techno geek like me. Great discussion on nuclear, missile, undersea, robotic and naval warfare. I recommend it.
