Kurzbeschreibung

Consulting may be defined as the art of influencing people at their request. The Secrets of Consulting takes you behind the scenes of that art, explaining in detail why the world of consulting seems so irrational, and some very practical steps you can take to make it more rational. Topics include: Gaining control of change, marketing and pricing your services, what to do when they resist your ideas, and more.

The Secrets of Consulting has been used in dozens of different fields. If you are a consultant, or ever use a consultant, this book is for you. The author draws on his 50+ years of consulting experience to share his secrets about the often irrational world of consulting. "This is a great book. Period! ...this advice is clearly applicable to more than just consulting; it is applicable to life in general." "The book is truly wonderful. A must have!" - Amazon reviews

Synopsis

In this book the author offers a personal tour of the often irrational world of consulting. He chooses a storytelling format, deriving rules, laws and principles from his anecdotes to make the points memorable. His style is informal and personal, the secrets applicable to other disciplines. This book does not tell you how to become a consultant but midst the wit and humour are practical steps to become more effective in this highly competitive profession. Among the topics covered are pricing and marketing your services, keeping ahead of the client, avoiding traps, finding alternative approaches, establishing trust, measuring your effectiveness and dealing with client resistance.

Ziemlich einzigartig 20.

JEDER!

A lot of answers 7. November 2003
Format:Taschenbuch
As the subtitle of this book suggests, it contains a lot of thoughts about how and when you should give advice. It also says why this is the case.

You have to know: as a programmer I never understood why nothing ever happened when I pointed out a problem. I never understood why people wouldn't embrace my idea to solve their problem. I hoped I would find answers to this (and similar) questions in the book - and I wasn't disappointed!

The book itself is well written, humorous and has a lot of little stories that illustrate the points the author wants to make. After reading the book I found variations of those stories happening in my environment - and by remembering the stories, I was sometimes able to remember the advice.

I really enjoyed to read this book and quickly finished it. I'm sure I will reread it again some time in the future.

There is so much good advice in this book and it is such a quick read, that I recommend you get a copy yourself. You probably get your moneys worth even if you are not a consultant (which I am not either) or planning to become one.

This title by Weinberg is *THE* book to have if you fill any type of consulting role. Don't worry if you aren't a full time, dreaded consultant - you'll find plenty of good rules on giving and receiving advice in this work. I have personally purchased 5 copies of this over the years because my copies seem to "disapear" as soon as I tell anyone about it.

Every single person who picks up this book on my recommendation takes the time to let me know how much they liked it - and that says something about Jerry's work. Because Jerry gets his points across by telling stories, this book is the perfect read for a flight, a few minutes between meetings, or when you can't take another seventeen noun, passive voice sentence that most IT texts use.

A must buy for anyone who works in teams, gives advice, or ....well, it's for anyone.
