“The writing of this debut novel is gratifyingly good and is remarkably well attuned to the era. Brilliant, in fact. Very appealing. We're given a perfect sense of the time but there's no unwieldy, stilted dialogue that can sometimes make me say huh?! Editing also passes the test. My compliments to the author.” ~ Reader review

“At last a more recent regency author who knows how to write, understands the genre and tells a good, clean story. The book was very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to reading another of Alicia Quigley's contribution to the genre. Lovers of bodice rippers, this is not for you; this is for those of us who love Austen, Heyer and Buck. Enjoy!” ~ Reader review

Written as an homage to Georgette Heyer, this is the first novel written by Alicia Quigley. After years of being filed away, we're happy to present it for your enjoyment. Please note, this is a Traditional Regency Romance; the "spice" (sex) level is very low, a G-rated movie, if you will.

What would you do if you were intelligent, independent, wealthy and had an interest in archaeology? If you're the Honorable Miss Isobel Paley, you do as you please, but you would keep it as your most guarded secret.

Isobel's story is set in a time of social change, after Mary Wollstonecraft published her famous "A Vindication on the Rights of Woman," positing (correctly, of course!) that women were not inferior to men. Even so, Society hadn't yet changed to the degree that a free-thinking woman of means could be open about her "unseemly" interests.

Isobel happily pursues her intellectual passions without a care for marriage. She's perfectly capable of tending to her own life as a trendsetter in fashion during the Season and an archaeologist in Scotland during the summer. Marriage, she believes, is only the surrender of her legal identity, independence and fortune to the whims of a man.

Then an accident outside her country estate brings Major Lord Francis Wheaton into her life and her home. Lord Francis, recently back from the Peninsular Wars, must convalesce at Isobel's manor, being too injured to travel.

What follows is the tale of two strong-willed individuals, both harboring secrets of their own, and their undeniable attraction to one another. Will Isobel succeed in keeping her secret? Will Lord Francis find what he needs? And just who is the mysterious Marcus Paley?

Mehr über den Autor

I am a lifelong lover of romance novels, who fell in love with Jane Austen in grade school, and Georgette Heyer in junior high. I made up games with playing cards using the face cards for Heyer characters, and sewed regency gowns (walking dresses, riding habits and bonnets that even Lydia Bennett wouldn't have touched) for my Barbie. In spite of a terrible science and engineering addiction, I remain a devotee of the romance, and enjoy turning my hand to their production as well as their consumption.

The writing of this debut novel is gratifyingly good and is remarkably well-attuned to the era. Brilliant, in fact. Very appealing. We're given a perfect sense of the time but there's no unwieldy, stilted dialogue that can sometimes make me say huh?! Editing also passes the test. My compliments to the author.

Lovely, wealthy and brainy Isobel keeps her intellectual pursuits secret while maintaining a façade of society miss. She is also quite determined not to fall under the heel of a husband, nor allow her wealth to fall out of her control.

Divine Major Lord Francis, second son of a duke, has recently returned from the Peninsular Wars, no longer the frivolous Corinthian, has matured and now seeks to become a responsible member of society.

The two meet after Francis suffers injury when his curricle overturns in front of Isobel's estate. He must convalesce in Isobel's home. Thus we have the wary beginning of a romance between two people of strong convictions and determination. Uh-oh. Francis lays siege and the dance between the two is fun to be a part of...he *is* persistent...and soon enchanted by Isobel...and forever teasing.

The beginning was rather slow-going.....I was a little befuddled (and bored) by Cousin Harriet's ramblings. I marched forward though, and was rewarded by the author at the 15% point. Things picked up and Cousin Harriet shut up, or maybe I just got used to her. She is a rather dear old girl.

Life with Isobel and Francis then became entertaining. It was fun watching the push and pull between the pair. The pace of the story wasn't fast, but neither was it tedious. The characters were well-developed and we were allowed to *see* events, rather than just being *told*. I, personally, *hate* that 'being told' style.

Altogether a light, enjoyable, interesting story. I recommend it, but you'll have to be brave and slog through the slow pace, dragging Cousin Harriet with you, until you hit the 15% point. Then you're free to enjoy! The humor in the book is the sneaky kind. I'd be reading along...reading along...and all of a sudden I'd be hit with a LOL something! Like I say, sneaky! *L*

For those who may prefer some sex in novels, be warned ~ NO SEX in this one. Kissing is all you're going to get here.

But for a gem of a story, yes...stick around. Take a chance. It's fun! :)

HASH(0x98554bc4) von 5 Sternen A satisfying, "clean" romance. 7. Mai 2014

I could echo many comments made in the May 5 review by "lark." This novel moves at a comfortable pace to reveal one woman's struggle to enjoy life values that are not yet fully accepted by her peers or society in general.

While at times I thought that Major Lord Francis Wheaton was less enlightened than he might have been, I have to recall how he'd been socialized. Kudos for him in figuring out that he needed more than a simpering young debutante, defining Isobel's fears and finding ways to reassure her.

It's so refreshing to read a good romance without overly explicit intimacy!

HASH(0x98554dec) von 5 Sternen Excellent book but no need for thie bluestocking to stay secret 8. Mai 2014

This was a very well-off woman who did not need to marry. Her bluestocking proclivities, thus, did not need to be hid, as, since she had no plans to marry, she did not need to hide them from a husband, and being a bluestocking itself would not have barred her from society. That was the one complaint that I had with this book. Aside from that, it reminded me a great deal of Georgette Heyer (whom, if I recall correctly, DID have a bluestocking heroine who did not hide it, and that woman was welcomed in all quarters, as she was financially secure and didn't need a husband). So refreshing to read a REAL Regency Romance, not a sex book trying to disguise itself as a Regency Romance!

I'm a great fan of Regency novels, with Georgette Heyer' s as the benchmark against which I rate this genre. This book is enjoyable, light reading. But, not up to the standard. The heroine's motivation seemed contrived. Well worth reading, especially if you're a fan of Regency novels. I really appreciated that the author didn't go into explicit sexual detail, as is often, unfortunately, done in this genre.

HASH(0x98554edc) von 5 Sternen Interesting(no explicit sex) Regency story 10. Mai 2014
Von Niki - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
A very intelligent woman living in an era where women were "owned" by their fathers or husbands. But, women were becoming aware that they could do anything a man could do....and often do it better! Interesting historical information.....Romance....intrigue....happy ending!
