Every baseball player, coach and fan should know the rules of their beloved game, but there’s just one problem, the rule book is an intolerable read that often raises as many questions as it answers. As a student of the game, and more recently an official, Jim set out to reconstruct the rules of baseball and explain the theory behind them in a logical and fun way, as the game unfolds, illustrated with history, game situations and personal observations. If that makes you think “I get it, baseball for dum-dums”, you couldn’t be more wrong. An ode to the national pastime that armchair enthusiasts will enjoy, it’s also written to educate and entertain the many players, coaches, parents and officials involved in the serious, and sometimes not-so-serious business of amateur baseball in America. From little league on up to the majors, the game remains the same. Baseball endures, and the rules abide!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they know the rules of baseball as well as anyone who wants to learn the rules of the game. The amount of nuance involved with the simplest rule is showcased in this book and
is presented in a profoundly readable fashion to make the journey a pleasure and often laughable. Jim keeps the reader entertained with a combination of baseball's most controversial plays, a bit of baseball history and many
amateur baseball situations seen through his eyes as the umpire! Toss in some personal experiences as an amateur player himself and you have the makings of a 5 star read or a great gift for the baseball enthusiast in your life.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Something you've never seen before... 26. September 2013

Just scanning the sub-headings under each chapter in the table of contents got me excited to dive in (i.e. Bucky "Bleeping" Dent, "Just One Dying Quail!", No Lollygagging, Glove is all Around). This is certainly a book you can skip around to chapters or sections that grab your attention, that said I read it straight through. As a long time baseball fan and former player I thoroughly enjoyed it! Jim's writing style is awesome, informative and funny...there were several laugh out loud moments. Baseball is truly a magically game for many reasons and some different for each of us, but one that is probably common among most that keeps us addicted is that: "You always see something you've never seen before" --- this is a book and style I have never seen before, and a sure hall of famer!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Tim McCarver - I'm looking at you 24. März 2014

My suggestion to FOX - hand this book to Tim before he calls another game.

Problem solved.

Seriously, though, I am an umpire who takes rules knowledge seriously. I own every rules manual on the market and quite a few titles that are out of print. This book is written by an umpire who is a true student of the history, evolution and spirit of the rules. Jim takes a step back to reconcile the common sense and fair play approach with the letter of the rules.

At the end of the day, a runner is responsible for avoiding a batted ball, avoiding a fielder fielding a batted ball, and a fielder fielding a deflected ball, but not responsible for avoiding a deflected ball or a thrown ball, intent notwithstanding. That is a lot to process and as confusing as it is to think about, the rule book makes it even more confusing. Jim makes it simple and reminds us that a runner is a part of the offense and is responsible for avoiding his teammate's batted ball, and that while the runner can not be expected to avoid a deflected (misplayed) ball, he CAN still be expected to avoid another human being in the act of fielding that deflected ball, and that a thrown ball is controlled by the defense and the responsibility shifts as a result.

Jim gets the reader there using this common sense approach to the rules. I recommend reading this book regardless of your role in the game.

If I had the power, I would require it of anyone who had a microphone.
"Foul tip, to the screen!"

This is a great book for those who are interested in the history of baseball skillfully woven with the rules of the game. Mr. Tosches is an excellent writer with a keen wit and sharp sense of humor. He presents the basic rules of the game in a setting of past experience of playing the game of baseball as well as umpiring the game. Everyone will learn more of the rules and the game by investing some time with this delightfull and entertaining book.

I've really enjoyed reading "The Rules Abide." Like so many people, I pretty much lived on and dreamed about baseball diamonds as a kid, and I continue to enjoy watching games as an adult. But who knew that baseball had some many rules, and that they are all have interesting implications for the game, it's history and the thought process (or lack thereof...) of every player, coach, and umpire on and off the field. The book is fun to read and would be a great gift for any "Baseball Dad". More than anything I've previously read about baseball, this book has changed how I watch games from kids leagues right up to the Majors. I can't count the number of games I've watched in the past, nor could I have expected a new take on baseball, but in addition to understanding the game and its history better, "The Rules Abide" has giving me an added a dimension of finally actually noticing the "Guys In Blue" (umpire squad) out on the field, watching how they position before and after the plays, and having an idea of the thought process when they are making calls. Fun stuff. I highly recommend this book!
