4.0 von 5 Sternen Great series, good book 17. Oktober 2013
Von Erklitt
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Four stars for this book, but FIVE for the series!

=================================
For those who don't know Riyria:

You don't want to start with this book, start with either 'Theft of Swords' or 'The Crown Tower'. The former is the first book of the finished series 'Riyria Revelations', which together make up a cohesive story besides each book having its own storyline and conclusion (or rather two of them per book, since the original six books are now published in three double volumes). The 'Riyria Chronicles' are prequels, telling earlier stories about the main characters, and so far there are two of those: 'The Crown Tower' and this one.

About the series as a whole:

'Riyria', the elvish word for two, is what the main characters call themselves: Royce and Hadrian, a thief and an ex-mercenary who earn their living by doing delicate jobs for desperate or embarrassed nobles, such like planting or removing incriminating evidence. The 'Revelations' follow them through several adventures and a gradual discovery of who they really are and why they are so skilled at what they do, ending with them playing a big part in events that change the world.

In many ways it's just another classic fantasy story, but it's extremely well done, with a quick pace, a lot of interesting characters, descriptions reduced to what is really needed, and moving from one enjoyable scene to the next with no boring narrative in between. The setting is something between Middle Earth and earth's Middle Ages, sprinkled with more modern (or ancient?) ideas like democracy or a female ambassador, and twisting some time honored fantasy concepts in ways that will surprise even a seasoned fantasy fan.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome book, Michael Sullivan is my new favorite author! 11. Oktober 2013

This was a great book! Loved just as much as the other Riyria books which I loved! I really enjoyed reading about Hilfred and getting his back story as well. It was a great ending and I hope there will be more of the Chronicles but if not this book ended well and made a great entry into the Riyria Revelations if you hadn't read them yet.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Another Great Riyria Story! 30. September 2013
Von Andrea T. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

First, let me say that I do not get tired of these books. They're fun reads, touching on serious subjects and containing emotional moments without ever making the ride less fun. The cast of characters are incredible, and the world is an interesting take on a fantasy setting. These are awesome books to read if you're coming off something really heavy, and just awesome books in general. (I never seem to be able to write a review for one without being like "just read them all.")

Anyway, I will say that I didn't think the pacing was quite as good in this one as some of the other entries in the Riyria universe. I think for me the POV almost changed a little too rapidly at times. It's something to note, though I didn't find that it distracted me from the story overly much. I finished it in less than two days.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love Riyria, as always! 26. September 2013
Von Sparkly Fluff - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

As I knew I would, I loved this book! I love any excuse to get into this world.

As I said in my review of The Crown Tower I still think that The Riyria Chronicles are best read AFTER The Riyria Revelations. I don't think you will really be spoiled for anything in the longer series if you don't, but I think my own experience was more satisfying that way. The manner in which each character is introduced in The Riyria Revelations series and the back story that is offered is absolutely enough to make that set of books complete and wonderful. The Riyria Chronicles books are like little extra treats that give you even more background and more reasons to love the Riyria Revelations. I'm still not sure if I would love The Riyria Chronicles as much if I hadn't read The Riyria Revelations first.

It really is great to see Royce and Hadrian at this point in their partnership, just one year after their first adventure in The Crown Tower. They are settling in, getting used to each other, but still not 100% sure of what drives the other.

I enjoyed learning more about Hilfred and the resolution of Gwen's problems with some of the misogynistic locals. It was also fun to see the young Pickerings!

I really hope this will not be the last Riyria adventure we get!

5.0 von 5 Sternen I've been looking forward to this book for almost a year 11. Oktober 2013
Von Michelle - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

After reading the Riyria Revelations, I was depressed that I wasn't going to read anything more with my favorite character, Hadrian Blackwater. After the prequel books were published I fell in love all over again.
Michael Sullivan does a wonderful job of keeping the details the same as in the Revelation series. It doesn't feel like this book was tacked on as extra, but rather is a part the series. It's evident that he had this whole story including the background story fleshed out before he even considered writing the prequels.
Rose and The Thorn gave me a lot of satisfaction because not only did I get more of my favorite hero, but I got a little bit of future information that happens after the Riyria Revelations! That in itself made reading the book worth it all the more!

4.0 von 5 Sternen The Rose and the Thorn Rocks! 9. Oktober 2013
Von W. Adams - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The Rose and the Thorn is the second book in the Riyria Chronicles by Michael J. Sullivan. It - like the previous book, The Crown Tower - is a prequel to the Riyria Revelations. But unlike most prequels, Mr. Sullivan has done something absolutely superb here: created a tale that both satisfies as a back story and excels as a stand alone, page turner.

As the novel begins, a year has passed since the events in The Crown Tower. Royce and Hadrian have been working together during this time, pulling small jobs and becoming better acquainted. Naturally, their relationship has changed, becoming less antagonistic, but they still have huge differences in their outlook on life. Hadrian is less naive about people but still retains his innate goodness of heart, and Royce, though still one careless insult away from unleashing his inner sociopath on someone, has begun to understand that killing is not the only solution to every problem. But even with their differences, they are obviously much more comfortable with one another, and together, they decide to return to the city of Medford for a visit with Gwen: the woman who so unselfishly provided them with succor at the end of The Crown Tower.

But while Hadrian, Royce and Gwen are the "stars" of the show in The Rose and the Thorn, the novel is about so much more. We are given intertwining tales about Viscount Albert Winslow, the royal family of Medford: King Amrath, Queen Ann, Prince Alric, and Princess Arista, the Pickerings, Bishop Saldur, Percy Braga, and even Reuben Hilfred - who was a minor character in the Riyria Revelations but whose story comes to life before our reading eyes. And as Mr. Sullivan slowly reveals all these amazing plots, his rare, writing brilliance becomes clear to see, for each of those lovely, individual stories begin to mesh together, creating a single, overarching tale. A yarn that not only encompasses this novel and the Riyria Chronicles but also the Riyria Revelations as well.

And somehow while juggling plot lines, Mr. Sullivan also finds time to gift each character with his or her own unique personality. There are no cookie cutter characters in this novel. Each character is well rounded, having their own unique history, problems, hopes, and fears that foreshadow their future selves but does not lock them into a particular role. Indeed, even those characters a longtime reader knows will one day be revealed as "evil" are so life like that you will find yourself hoping that somehow they will see the error of their ways and change before their fate closes around them.

But what about Hadrian and Royce's hilarious camaraderie, I hear many of you asking?

It is there. But it is developing gradually in a realistic way, not springing forth fully grown. And when that camaraderie does rear its head in this story, it is always amazing to see the unlikely pair slowly becoming the Riyria we all love.

Overall, this is a wonderful, entertaining fantasy, worthy of inclusion into the ranks of the best novels of 2013. While some readers call Hadrian and Royce and their adventures simple, uncomplicated fantasy, if this is an example of "simple fantasy" novels then I would label it simply brilliant and ask every writer out there to begin to emulate it. It quite frankly is just that enjoyable to read.

Now, those of you that have read my reviews know I always find something to critique. (It is a "review" after all, which means you want to hear the bad with the good, right?) So I'd feel remiss if I did not mention a few, minor issues I had with the novel.

So here goes . . .

I really do not have any complaints worth writing about. Obviously, the tale is lacking some sense of suspense; it is a prequel after all. However, even though a reader of the Riyria Revelations already knows what happens, Mr. Sullivan does an excellent job of circumventing this problem and penning a rousing adventure that presents enough new insight into characters and plots to make you enjoy finding out how it all happened.

Go get this book and enjoy it!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. I'd like to thank Netgalley for allowing me to receive this review copy and inform everyone that the review you have read is my opinion alone.
