From Booklist

Jim Rockford is still a struggling private eye living in a house trailer near the beach in Malibu. His knees are aching and his bank account depleted when he strikes a deal to find an orthopedic surgeon's niece. If Rockford finds aspiring actress Barbie, he gets a discount on knee surgery. Then the man Barbie was staying with is killed with Jim's gun. All the characters we've grown to know from the Rockford television show are present: Beth Davenport, Jim's lawyer; Lieutenant Becker, Jim's best buddy on the LAPD; Captain Diehl, Jim's worst enemy on the force; and, of course, Angel Martin, Jim's former cell mate and the most annoying sidekick in history. Fans of the television show will think they've died and gone to Rockford heaven. Kaminsky, author of the Toby Peters series, strikes just the right balance of humor and danger. Here's hoping Rockford has at least as long a run in print as he's had in the hearts of television viewers. Wes Lukowsky

From Kirkus Reviews

As if he didn't have enough to do already, Kaminsky takes a break from his three series detectives--Toby Peters, Porfiry Rostnikov, and Abe Lieberman--to put his spin on an even older series, starring TV's laid-back Malibu shamus Jim Rockford, who agrees this time to look for orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Lewiston's missing niece in return for getting his knees fixed. Barbie Lewiston is a pitiable actress, but she made the trip from Little Rock in hopes of breaking into the biz, and Rockford's best bet is to follow the list of contacts her uncle gives him. So he talks to everybody on the list, and then--now under suspicion of killing a sleazeball producer who wasn't even on the list--talks to each of them again, in a different order, except for the ones that are getting killed, presumably over the theft of a pricey collection of hand-painted Chinese snuff bottles. Rockford's good angels and bad--Lt. Dennis Becker, attorney Beth Davenport, con-artist Angel Martin--all appear in their accustomed roles (Rockford involves Angel in a missing-cat caper that's meant to be a lot funnier than it is), but even nostalgia buffs will be pained by the inevitable loss of sunny James Garner in the title role. No disgrace to the TV series, but no improvement either. Kaminsky's fans shouldn't get their hopes up: The important brand-name here is Rockford. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. not only was the green bottle skillfully written, but it satisfied me both as a mystery reader and Rockford Files tv watcher. now as i come on line to see what else smk has done, i find this is Vol. 4--even better! Angel is perfect, Jim is better than tv where j garner caricatures the part a little too much every now and then, the ending remembering Old Carlos while looking west is effective and legitimate, and the scene where the judge takes apart the young d.a. is worth the book alone. what a find for me--and you.

Stuart Kaminsky has written an enjoyable and satisfying novel based on the characters from the television series, "The Rockford Files." Jim, Beth, Dennis, Angel, and the Firebird are all here in form true to the original characters.

Jim Rockford is older now; mourning the loss of his father, Rocky; battling bad knees; trying to elude Angel's ubiquitous scams; and reflecting on his relationship with Beth and what might have been. Despite the passing of the years, Jim retains his wry wit and keen observations of the human condition. Mr. Kaminsky provides additional insight into the character of Jim Rockford, particularly the formative years and the time in prison.

The story is well-paced and intriguing. I enjoyed this book more than many of the recent 2-hour "Rockford Files" movies presented on television in recent years. If you enjoyed the original "Rockford Files" series from 1974-1980, you will enjoy this book.

Kaminsky captures Rockford's sardonic style perfectly. All the old-time cast members appear in the book -- Angel, Becker, Beth Davenport. Kaminsky truly understands the anti-hero appeal of Rockford. If you loved the series, you'll love this book.
