A journey of self-discovery 2. August 2013
Von Stuart Updegrave - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I read this book last year when it first came out and have intended to review it ever since. As a fellow adventure motorcyclist, I found much of Birkmann's tale resonated with me very strongly. The courage she exhibited to tear apart her existing life and leap into the unknown is inspiring, as is the self-awareness and openness to self-discovery on display in this book.

That leap into the unknown is the foundation of this book, really. The author deftly uses the act of solo motorcycle travel as a metaphor for the inner journey she (somewhat unwittingly) embarked on by leaving Denmark for Argentina in the first place, and then by following her passion where it led her - both literally on her BMW and figuratively on her path of transformation in the process.

If you're interested in motorcycles, travel, personal growth in the face of challenges internal and external, this book is well worth a look.

Not for bikers only ;-) 24. April 2013
Von Chris - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This is not a motorcycle travelling book, and if you want to call it like that, it's an extraordinary one! A truly open and honost story of a woman who gets confronted with herself while being on a solo motorcycle adventure through the Americas. Creating by self reflection an awareness of bad habits, which get often in our way. And that it's so easy to fall back in those old patterns and habits, burry yourself in work again and loose out of sight what life is about: staying true to yourself! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go a bit deeper then a "just go for a ride" book. Well done Annette and thanks for sharing your wonderful experience!

Inspiring 25. September 2012
Von Nancy Clark - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Annette really spoke to my heart. In so many parts of this book, I felt like I was reading about my own struggles as a woman. So many of us are too afraid to really go for it and are held by back our insecurities. Annette made hers a catalyst for fulfilling a dream. Her brutal honesty about struggling with those same issues during her journey speaks volumes about her character. This story is about much more than a motorcycle journey--it's a life journey and an insight into our own fears, insecurities and dreams. Kudos to Annette for being so brave and then sharing her adventure with us. An amazing book; an amazing woman.

An Excellent Read 30. September 2014
Von Henry - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
The Road to Getting Yourself Out of the Way, a Journey to Effortless Living is a deeply moving narrative of one woman’ s inner quest from being lost in her mind to faith, effortlessness and freedom. The backdrop for this inner odyssey is her solo motorcycle journey which takes her from Ushuaia, Argentina to New York.

This book has been compared to Zen and the Art of Motorcylce Maintenance and this comparison is quite valid. In fact, I actually found The Road to Getting Yourself Out of the Way to be much more accessible and no less profound. It is a humble and sincere book by a strong woman who is not afraid to be completely honest about every aspect of both her inner and physical journeys thus giving the book its immense humanity and making the author’s experience relatable to anyone. I found The Road to Getting Yourself Out of the Way to be an excellent read and a must for anyone who has tried to get anywhere in his or her life, on a motorcycle or not.

A Huge Disappointment 15. September 2014
Von Buddha Man - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is a poorly written book, and a big disappointment. I'm a writer and an avid motorcyclist (46 years and currently ride a BMW R1200RT), and was looking forward to a book that reflected what I call the "spiritual" aspects of motorcycle touring, as well as the adventure aspects. A bit of travelogue is also a nice addition...notes on the countries and their peoples. This book is poorly organized, has no sense of momentum or purpose, but rather is a rambling narrative of random thoughts that appears to have been slapped together with hopes of publishing it somewhere. Perhaps well-accepted by the author's friends and family, but I would suggest looking elsewhere for a truer sense of the freedom and joy of motorcycling.
