I can only agree with everybody else- this book is extremely tremendously funny, witty and even wise. Somebody here compared C&H with the Peanuts, and though that comes pretty close, I personally like Calvin & Hobbes better. Wattersons drawings are just excellent and somehow I find it easier to relate to Calvin, Hobbes and just about every character in their entourage. I prefer the earlier Calvin&Hobbes-Collections as I think the later ones tend a bit to repeat things (while of course still ranking high above the average comicstrips!). I picked this collection as I think it's my favourite but the first 5 or 6 collections are all so hilarious it's actually hard to tell. Oh, and an important advice: PLEASE do read Calvin & Hobbes in english- it really is way better! Somebody gave me a C&H-book in german once and it extremely lost its charm.
This is probably my favorite C&H collection -- though "Something Under the Bed is Drooling" would be a close second. I didn't like "Baby-Sat" much when I first read it (compared to previous collections, I mean) but it has since grown on me. Watterson's art hits its stride here -- it is smooth and polished, without the occasionally pretentious formal experimentations of the later books (not that those are all bad, but they grate sometimes). There are some classic cartoons in this collection -- I think the "Chocolate Frosted Sugar-Bombs beanie" story is one of the very best. Look at the way Calvin keeps getting his hopes up, over and over again, only to have them dashed -- and yet there is a kind of solace at the end. This is as funny, sad and wise as the best of "Peanuts."
What can I say, this is another triumph, another Calvin and Hobbes classic. Hysterically funny, witty, even touching, it is a worthy collection of one of the greatest comic strips ever, and a very, very funny book. The character of Rosalind is great - she seems like pretty much the only person who can be Calvin's match (even Hobbes can't make that claim). Superb.
Endlich mal wieder was zum Lachen.
I own all but three Calvin and Hobbes books, and I have never not enjoyed one of these books. Some of the cartoons in the books are a little out of place, but others are hilarious!! I was sad to see Calvin and Hobbes go, but at least I can read the strip in the books. I also suggest Scientific Progress Goes "Boink" and The Days Are Just Packed. I don't pick favorites because they're all great. If you ever see this book, PICK IT UP!! Buy it the first time you see it, I promise it will be worth your money!! Five Stars: *****
F-U-N-N-Y! I don't have the whole collection of their comic strips but i can tell that this one just make me wanted to buy all the collection. I think Calvin and Hobbes are the most funny cartoon characters i have ever ever seen in my life. And if i had money, i would just buy all of them.
This book, along with Snow Goons, and Scientific Progreess, are my favorite Calvin and Hobbes books (I own) so far. The stories about Tracer Bullet, Spaceman Spiff, and Roasalyn are two thumbs and two claws up! Excellent!
Witty, challenging and utterly amusing is this fabulous collection of Bill Watterson's characters Calvin and Hobbes. Definetely one that should be read to lift up the spirit and intrigue the analizing reader.
