Kurzbeschreibung

It is 1939. The world stands on the brink of Armageddon. In the Soviet Union, years of revolution, fear and persecution have left the country unprepared to face the onslaught of Nazi Germany. For the coming battles, Stalin has placed his hopes on a 30-ton steel monster, known to its inventors as the T-34 tank, and, the 'Red Coffin' to those men who will soon be using it.

But the design is not yet complete. And when Colonel Nagorski, the weapon's secretive and eccentric architect, is found murdered, Stalin sends for Pekkala, his most trusted investigator. Stalin is convinced that a sinister group calling itself the White Guild, made up of former soldiers of the Tsar, intend to bring about a German invasion before the Red Coffin is ready. While Soviet engineers struggle to complete the design of the tank, Pekkala must track down the White Guild and expose their plans to propel Germany and Russia into conflict.

The Year is 1939...
All around the world almost every nation prepare their militaries to be involved in the so called World War II which sems to be imminent.

In the Soviet Union years of revolution, fear and persecution have left the country unprepared and near to bancruptcy.
Almost unable to face a very probable assault of Nazi Germany, but...

For the forcoming battles, Stalin has placed all his hopes on a 30-ton steel monster, named by its inventor the "T-34" tank, an idea of only ONE man, a genius.
But is yet called "The Red Coffin" by those soldiers who will soon be forced to use it.
Those who were the first to try it out - those men are not able to call it in any way any more...

Because the design is not yet completed.
It is still a deadly trap for those who are bound to guide it against the enemy.
So, when Colonel Nagorski, the weapon's architect is found murdered, Stalin sends for Pekkala his most trusted investigator, known to all Russians as "The Emerald Eye"...
Stalin has convinced himself that a group known as the White Guild, founded by former elite soldiers of the Tsar, will try to force the Germans into an invasion of Russia before the "Red Coffin - Tank" is ready. While Soviet engineers struggle to complete the design of the tank, Pekkala must track down the White Guild and find out if there really are set up plans by Germany to tear the Russians into an imminent conflict.

So Pekkala - once condemned by Stalin himself to make lifetime gulag in the more than hostile surroundings of Siberia for having been the "Eye of the Tsar, The Emerald Eye", the Tsar's personal investigator, incorruptable and unbreakable - returns to investigate.

Von NMK TOP 1000 REZENSENT
Format:Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen interesting and recommendable 20. August 2012
Von Galdor
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
this is the first novel written by sam eastland i read.
the book is dense, tense and the text is fluent.
the storyline goes arround the year 1930 and shows how much the russian land was linked to its intelligence service as well as political leadership was singular and someway brutal.
i can not easily say i enjoyed this novel. but it was interesting and full of historical knowledge wraped as good entertainment with some thrilling parts for example the hunt for the coffin.

at least if find red coffin very recommendable and like to rate it with five stars.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Red Coffin = Shadow Pass 24. Juni 2011
Von Jon F. Snider - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I enjoyed Eastland's first book very much and read his second book, on Kindle as 'Shadow Pass" with equal enjoyment. Imagine my surprise when I ordered this book, not carefully noting it was a UK edition, and was in fact the same book "Shadow Pass" with a different title. It was a strange day when I took my new book to the park planing on kicking back and reading for some of the afternoon, when after a few (admittedly slow on the uptake) pages it became clear I had already read this book. This is not clearly evident on the Amazon web site, at least not to me, and it seems the publishers should not have used different names.

And it will be him and his trusted Major Kirov to save Russia the Motherland, and Stalin of having their worst nightmares to become true - a pre-mature conflict with the Germans...

As always - historical precision together with a suspense to make goose bumps are the main ingredients for the second novel of Sam Eastland's series about Pekkala, the finno-russian Investigator.
And for a bonus - we will have a lot of secret information about Rasputin...
Never revealed - never told about - in this way...

Sam Eastland is an author that is very able to bind the readers, to hold them tight without great amounts of blood spread around. He uses his ability to keep us close also with the unsaid...

More of this, Mr Eastman!
And the next in the series called Siberian Red I have ordered just in this moment! After that hase yet come out Red Moth (Inspector Pekkala 4). I will read this one for sure, too!

Reads like a short story with the plot and characters nicely developed. Use of flashback helped develop the story lines. By the way, this is the UK paperback version of Shadow Pass, so do not make the same mistake I did and purchase both.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable 7. Mai 2011

Most authors will agree that the second book is the difficult one. All the pent up enthusiasm gone, we are left with the need to develop an interesting story. That said I think my reviewing colleague is a little hard. This book may not have the pace of the author's first effort but it is an interesting story nevertheless. The tank is actually the T34 which for the Russians was indeed a war winner and the suggestion that the Germans might be a little curious quite believable; as is the involvement of the remnants of the White Russian organisation.
As to the flash-backs to the days of the Tsar I didn't find this disruptive, rather they build the character of a man who must be at war with himself, given the mess he finds himself in.
The one thing about Mr Eastland's effort that really intrigues me is his portayal of Stalin. Many would say this monster exceeds Hitler in the horrors he was guilty of and yet we have an honourable man working for him. I confess to finding his portrayal of Stalin difficult at the moment, but I will follow Pekkala's career with interest.
With war looming things are going to become very interesting for special investigator Pekkala and his offsider Kirov.
I had thought three stars, but in order to bring some balance I am giving four and I very much look forward to the next adventure.
