Blurb: When Mattie has issues with her weight, she decides to take charge of her life, redo her image, find confidence and maybe even dare to talk to guys. Will a change in lifestyle, a friend, a tormentor, and a dream guy help Mattie discover her real self and find romance along the way?

"…a charming young adult novel about love and identity. Mattie, the first-person narrator, is a spunky heroine who takes charge of her life, makes mistakes, dusts herself off, and tries again. Kevin, her heartthrob, is both believable and appealing. The plot moves quickly with enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing about whether-and with whom-Mattie will find true love ….
~~Debra Stang, eBook Reviews Weekly

"…Ann Herrick delivers a plot that is big on empowerment for the female teen, while exploring the conflicting emotions, uncertainty, and dreams that are prevalent in those "between" years.
[She] tells a story about a young woman who has character, a sense of compassion, strong commitment, determination, and understanding beyond her years. We see the questions about ethics, compassion and morality arise and how they are handled.
This is a very good portrayal of the teen years, addressing some of the issues that are faced, the challenges and opportunities that can arise, and the choices that are made. Best of all, we watch Mattie bloom before our very eyes and grow into what she calls, "the real me."
~~Kim Green-Spangler,

"…a great insight into the insecurities, hopes, dreams, and confusion of being a teenager, and the self-acceptance and realization that not all is how it appears to be at first. Mattie is self-conscious over her appearance, little realizing that her true beauty has been shining forth all the time – even without the weight loss and haircut. The new look just gives her the self-confidence to hold her head high and let the “real” Mattie shine forth. She realizes that even guys, and the “popular” kids, have insecurities and fears of their own…I found it to be entertaining, and…I plan on reading more of Ms. Herrick’s books in the future."

5.0 von 5 Sternen A heartwarming Teen Novel! 28. März 2012
Von SIL - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Ann Herrick has once again delivered a moving YA novel that speaks directly to the hearts of teens. The reader connects immediately with Mattie, the viewpoint character, as she grapples with her need to lose weight. Her doctor tells her to shed 20 pounds, a jerk at school by the name of George calls her Chunk, and she's in charge of the refreshment committee for the prom. How can she ever win this seemingly insurmountable battle? Maybe with the help of her friend, Walt? And then there's Kevin, the dreamy guy who she's had her eye on...maybe if she does take off a few pounds, she can better catch and hold his interest. Throughout the story, Mattie endures a roller-coaster ride as she struggles to to make sense of her insecurities, fears, hopes, and dreams. On the balance, Mattie is portrayed as a truly sympathetic character who battles her dragons with dignity and courage. She also learns that even a cute, popular guy can be confused and unsure of himself at times.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Real Me 13. Mai 2012
Von B. Smith - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
The Real Me is about a teenager named Mattie, who is just trying to fit in. When her new doctor tells her that she needs to loose twenty pounds and being tired of getting teased about her weight. Mattie decides its time for a change.

After loving Ann Herricks' The Farewell Season, I was completely honored to be given the chance to read and review The Real Me. Ann has quickly become one of my new favorite authors. I absolutely love her writing style. I loved the realistic characters and the fact that the moment I start reading her novels, I just can't put them down. The Real Me has a great message and makes you think about how everyone has insecurities, no matter what they look like or how popular they are. I've had weight issues my whole life and it took me quite some time to be comfortable in my own skin. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

The Real Me was a refreshingly wonderful contemporary read, that I highly recommend.

Special Thanks to Ann Herrick for providing a kindle edition copy in exchange for an honest review!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Natural teen voice, honest depictions and gentle humor 10. Oktober 2012
Von Sheila Deeth - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Told in a nicely plausible teen voice, The Real Me follows Mattie as she tries to change her image, losing a little weight and maybe gaining some confidence too. Not overly heavy or emotional, pleasantly clear with a feeling of honest teen conviction, and nicely avoiding the over-drawn adjectives of dreamy description, this story follows Mattie from the doctor's surgery to a world of practical, sensible steps and plausible success.

Kevin is the dreamy guy Mattie'd love to date, but he's dating someone else. Walter is the honorable geek who quietly supports and encourages her. And Erwina is the confident girl-friend. A host of other characters weave into the tale, nicely described by their actions so the reader's never confused. The plot moves forwards through the regular events of school and the honest emotions of a misfit, while Mattie slowly turns into a swan and learns who "the real me"could be.

There's no fairytale ending to this short novel. Mattie's happy, but her future's not set in stone. Good things have happened and the world moves on, minus some extra pounds of weight, and plus some well-earned self-confidence.

I enjoyed the book for its honest depictions, its pleasingly gentle humor and its generous spirit.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A story anyone who has been picked on can relate to! 8. April 2012
Von Mysunshine510 - Veröffentlicht auf

Life is hard enough as a teenager. Let alone as a teenager who does everything in her power to be a wallflower. To top it off her new doctor has told her she needs to lose 20 pounds.

Mattie is your every day, blend into the crowd teenager. She has a few friends, is an honestly sweet person, and is uncomfortable in her own skin. Mattie has had a crush on Kevin since he came to the school a year ago. Unfortunately for Mattie, Kevin is dating Nicole, the high schools most perfect girl.

What follows in the book, The Real Me by Ann Herrick, is the self discovery and agnst of a teenager. Mattie soon loses the weight, through a good diet and exercise, and starts to come out of her cocoon to emerge as the beautiful butterfly everyone, except for herself, knew she could be.

The book has a great storyline. If you're someone who experienced being picked on for being different in any way in high school, or you're a teenager who feels out of place in their own body, this book is a good read! You'll be able to connect with the main character, Mattie, who although she can change who she is on the outside she'll still be the same on the inside.

I was not paid for this review. The author provided me a copy of the book. All opinons within this review are my own, my opinion was in no way swayed.
