I dont understand the critique about the present tense used in the book, i liked that it was written in the present, it gave me a more dynamic "here and now" plot experience and english isnt even my birth languege, i learned it in school and through movies and still didnt have to translate words. of course there are some words you wont understand when you read the book the first time because the book is a really hardcore science fiction novel that throws some words at you whos meaning you can only discover by reading the same sentence again and think about it. but it was really fun to uncover the details and meanings of some words when i read the book a second time and even at the third time i understood more of the small details of the world the author created. it is also to say that in generall i'm not a fan of science fiction, i have read dann simmons ilium and olympus, but that was it for my knowledge of this genre. despite my lack of experience with hardcore science fiction, and i would categorize the quantum thief as such, i really loved the experience to read it, again and again. the main character is one of the funnies and most sympathetic antiheroes i have ever met in a book. so if you search for a science fiction detective story with lots of action about a brilliant thief, which you can read over and over again to discover new and interesting background story, buy it. i fully recommend that book. but as always it is just my personal opinion. sorry for the bad english, as i said its not my main language.
