He makes the rules . . .
Mafiya enforcer Aleksandr "The Siberian" Sevastyan’s loyalty to his boss is unwavering, until he meets the boss’s long-lost daughter, a curvy, tantalizing redhead who haunts his mind and heats his blood like no other. Ordered to protect her, Sevastyan will do anything to possess her as well—on his own wicked terms.

Rules are made to be broken . . .
PhD student Natalie Porter had barely recovered from her first sight of the breathtakingly gorgeous Sevastyan before the professional hit man whisks her away to Russia, thrusting her into a world of extreme wealth and wanton pleasures. With every day she spends under his protection, she falls deeper under his masterful spell.

Are you ready to play?
Yet all is not as it seems. To remove Natalie from an enemy’s reach, Sevastyan spirits her into hiding. From an opulent palace in Russia to the decadent playgrounds of the mega-wealthy in Paris, the two lovers will discover that even their darkest—and most forbidden—fantasies can come true…

I usually love Kresley Cole, but this book is disappointing. It reminds me of EL James' Fifty Shades Trilogy, which I found just as boring. Too bad, I am looking forward to Ms. Cole's next book.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Bisher der schlechteste Teil 9. Februar 2014

Here is another problem with issuing a novella in three parts. Had The Professional been released as one book, I might rate it 3 stars overall. I loved the first part (my embarrassing 5-star review:

The second was meh: has the action and violence I was looking for but the sex scenes don't do it for me and their relationship gets on my nerves. Nat is weaker, lost, confused, and waiting on Sevastyan. He distances himself from her and, in turn, I feel distanced from feeling anything for them.

This third is all about emotional upheaval. Sev treats Nat like garbage, there's some cheesy BDSM scenes, and Nat gives Sev the classic ultimatum: do what I want or else I'll break up with you (eye-roll + lol). I don't believe her but apparently Sev's character does. Nat started out vibrant, smart, inexperienced but confident, a thinking AND feeling woman. She quickly devolves into a stereotypical, childish, submissive heroine (Submissive in all senses of the word. In book 1, she was sexually submissive but there was a good balance). I read this right around midnight as it released and was honestly flabbergasted when I finished. That's it!?! Part 3 is NOT GOOD and soooo disappointing given Cole's writing reputation and the hot and exciting beginning. I assume a sequel is in the works based on Nat's obnoxious roommate (as written, she makes a better gal pal than protagonist). This series left a bitter taste in my mouth. Can ya tell?

Sevastyan, oh Sevastyan. What a total jerk this man is. He is living in the middle ages and has no idea how to deal with women whatsoever. In fact, because he is so super badass, he treats everyone as though they are inferior to his greatness. No one more than our shrinking violet of a heroine, Natalie.

Spoilers Ahead:

She pines away all day while her master is off at "meetings" (aka: mapping out her future without her input-in fact, unbeknownst to her, they are even engaged!) and when he finally comes home at night, he spends hours whipping Natalie into a sexual frenzy. I find this very unbelievable. Natalie loves being treated like a doormat so much that she can't resist putting out at night? If she was as ballsy as Cole wants us to believe, Sevastyan would be enduring a dry spell as big as the Sahara in this book. In fact, he would not have Natalie to come brooding home to because if she was a tough cookie like she was supposed to be, she would be on a plane to Greece looking forward to sipping glasses of Ouzo and scoping out hot Greek men with her hilarious BFF. But no, the thrill of nipple clips is more important than respect according to Natalie's actions (not her words, but her actions. She swears up and down that she wants to establish a true relationship...after the nipple clips come off, that is).

Mr. Big Stuff thinks a relationship consists of sex, more sex, and dirtier sex. We find out later in the book that BDSM sex is the only way he knows how to please women because he saw a prostitute enjoy it once and vowed to learn how to bring that brand of "joy" to the table in any future love affair. Now, keep in mind that Sevastyan is nowhere near as creepy as Christian Grey, but he is still a piece of work. That said, you can't really blame Sevastyan for the boorish kidnapping scene at the airport since Natalie is always sending mixed messages. "Respect me! Don't respect me! Use me, hard, every night, however you want." Of course Sevastyan thinks his caveman behavior is desirable to her. In the past she has always allowed Sevastyan and her father to dictate her comings and goings and plan every little detail of her life so why wouldn't he think he could continue to get away with doing it?

Sevastyan isn't one for small talk. If he speaks more than 2 words at a time, it is generally cause for alarm. Natalie on the other hand is a talker. She wants to know Mr. Whip Wielder's deepest and darkest secrets. Even after he opens up, his previous behavior colored the character for me irrevocably. His story was sad, but still doesn't change the fact that he is a jerk! Despite her efforts, there is NO relationship here besides a sexual and obsessive one. There's no romance. There is a cold, one-dimensional male character and a needling, supposedly tough but not really female character-both with overdeveloped sex drives.

Why is BDSM all the rage right now? I try to stay open minded about these books with submissives and dominants, but I frankly don't understand why it is sexy to so many. So many writers of this genre swear up and down that being submissive in the bedroom does not mean that a character is submissive outside the bedroom. I call BS on this. I have read several books in this genre and every single one of them tries to convince the reader that the submissive is strong and confident otherwise. I have never been convinced that they actually are. Actions speak louder than words and Natalie is nothing but a submissive through and through. She's got a big mouth and complains a lot, but she never does much to change her situation as a strong character would. How disappointing. Obviously I am reviewing the third book of the series and have read the other two, so I knew what I was getting myself into, but I was truly crossing my fingers from beginning to end that Cole would pull this off and succeed where others have failed. No such luck.

I love Cole and was hoping that the plot would carry these books beyond sex, but I found that wasn't the case. I should know better than expect an actual intelligent plot in an erotica novel. I hope Kresley devotes her time and energy going forward to her IAD and Arcana series. Kresley Cole is an absolutely amazing writer typically and she is the undisputed Queen of paranormal romance. I am really looking forward to her other books coming out this year.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Ridiculous ending 20. Januar 2014

I LOVED Book 1 and 2 and had high hopes for book 3. Unfortunately, I felt the author went to such extreme levels on everything (sex, character behavior) that was beyond ridiculous. I admit, I am not a fan of BDSM, but I liked how it was portrayed in book 1 and 2. Now book 3 just seems like another version of 50 shades of grey. Unrealistic, misogynistic and very poor plot. Plus, the whole book was just sex scene after sex scene. I like Kresley Cole but she needs to stop listening to whoever is telling her to go more edgy, more intense, more sex, more 50 fifty shades of grey.

The instant I started hating book 3 was when Nat opened up her bung hole for Sev after he basically acted like a psycho, kidnapping, abusive bastard. Which is just sad. For one, I really liked Sev in book 1 and 2. And two, that scene was so degrading to woman after what he did to her- lying, controlling her, the airport scene. I like dominance in a male, but that was pushing the limit to abuse, just like 50 shades of grey.

At least, it ended happily ever after. That I liked.

3.0 von 5 Sternen So sorry, Kresley! Only 3 stars. 20. Januar 2014

First, I LOVE Kresley Cole. She is probably the best erotic romance writer out there. I've reread her IAD series many times and want more! Also LOVED the MacCarrick Brothers series, especially If You Deceive. So I was a little disappointed when she decided to do a book based in contemporary time and without immortals. (Okay, I know that sounds weird.) But, since I have read every one of her erotic romances, I knew I had to give this a try.
I really liked Parts 1 & 2. I got past the whole Russian mob thing, which was a little hard considering the fact that the Russian mob is REALLY not very nice and you're not going to find loving people like her father, Paxan or gorgeous, passionate men like Sevastyan. You're going to find lots of ugly, mean thugs.
This is a fantasy though, so I was going with it.
I even liked that Cole was trying something new for her with BDSM. I'm not really into BDSM - just think it was cool for Cole to give her narrative take on it. The attraction between Natalie and Sevastyan was so hot in Parts 1 & 2. The sex, as usual for Cole was also really hot. When we left off on Part 2, she left us hanging at the sex club and I didn't know what to expect. Couldn't wait to read this part when it came out today.
Well, Cole went for it - full on BDSM sex orgy voyeurism. Good for her. Not so good if it's not for you (which it kinda isn't for me.) And for the first time, I felt Cole did something that she's never done before, that is have a character do something out of character. She is usually so careful with that. It was hard for me to buy that Sevastyan would allow anyone to see Natalie naked and having sex. Just didn't make sense for his character.
Okay, still going with it though.
Then the plot just sort of thins out. Natalie struggles with the fact that she's achieved sexual intimacy with Sevastyan, but doesn't know what he's doing in his day job. And I'm thinking, why would you want to know? Maybe he's having people killed? And with all of Natalie's intelligence, doesn't she want to know about her inheritance, or what she is going to do with it? She seems to have no questions about herself, just this desire to know Sevastyan better.
I don't want to give away any more plot points or spoilers . So I'll just repeat what another reviewer said, this just wraps up too quickly. All that build-up and not really much to take away here. And I'm not getting Natalie at all. Unlike other female characters in Coles' books, Natalie goes from being this really interesting spunky woman in Parts 1 & 2 to a kinda boring character by the end of Part 3.
Okay, maybe one more plot point as an example. I wanted Natalie to get away at the airport. I wanted her to reconnect with her friends, her past, and become Natalie again. (Would have been so cool if Sevastyan had to track her down to Jess's cabin.) I wanted Sevastyan to have to deal with that. I didn't like how Sevastyan dragged her back and "disciplined" her - that was getting a little too creepy close to abuse. Okay, the sex was hot, but even I squirmed thinking that there was something really threatening and way too controlling about it. Have to say, a little bummed about that. (Thinking about how Elizabeth turns the tables on Lothaire. Now that was a really cool female character and the ending worked.)
I'll read anything Cole writes. I'm glad I read this. Wish I didn't feel like this book was rushed into publication for Cole to get into the BDSM genre game though. Kresley, listen to me girl! Go back to the IAD series. We want to know what happened to Munro!

Since I am not a fan of BDSM, I didn't really care for the 2nd and especially 3rd installments of this series. Still a fan on KC, just hoping she overcomes the 50 Shade of Grey wave quickly.
