Kurzbeschreibung

“There’s an incredible amount of depth and thinking in the practicesdescribed here, and it’s impressive to see it all in one place.”

–Win Treese, coauthor of Designing Systems for Internet Commerce

The Practice of Cloud System Administration, Volume 2, focuses on “distributed” or “cloud” computing and brings a DevOps/SRE sensibility to the practice of system administration. Unsatisfied with books that cover either design or operations in isolation, the authors created this authoritative reference centered on a comprehensive approach.

Case studies and examples from Google, Etsy, Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, and other industry giants are explained in practical ways that are useful to all enterprises. The new companion to the best-selling first volume, The Practice of System and Network Administration, Second Edition, this guide offers expert coverage of the following and many other crucial topics:

Designing and building modern web and distributed systems

  • Fundamentals of large system design
  • Understand the new software engineering implications of cloud administration
  • Make systems that are resilient to failure and grow and scale dynamically
  • Implement DevOps principles and cultural changes
  • IaaS/PaaS/SaaS and virtual platform selection

Operating and running systems using the latest DevOps/SRE strategies

  • Upgrade production systems with zero down-time
  • What and how to automate; how to decide what not to automate
  • On-call best practices that improve uptime
  • Why distributed systems require fundamentally different system administration techniques
  • Identify and resolve resiliency problems before they surprise you

Assessing and evaluating your team’s operational effectiveness

  • Manage the scientific process of continuous improvement
  • A forty-page, pain-free assessment system you can start using today

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent! 15. September 2014
Von Jeremy M Page - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Very good!

Similar quality to the previous book by this team, The Practice of System and Network Administration, this book offers both a solid overview and a good list of "must do" steps to build and maintain a well thought out environment. Focusing on reliability, loose coupling and scalability this is, in my opinion, a must have book for system administrators who are following the evolutionary path to "DevOps" and "The Cloud", neither of which are really new practices as much as the convergence of things that folks have been doing for years.

Not just for people who are moving applications to AWS/Google/Rackspace etc, this book is somewhat more general, aiming at administration where the Service, not the underlying infrastructure, is the focus. A good thing since that's where the benefits to the business actually live.

Solid methods to measure your organization's current state and how to track your path to becoming more effective, with terms and metrics that your upper management folks are probably already familiar with. Not just technical or high level discussion but how to navigate the path from what you want to do to getting there.

This book is already one of my top 4 resources (along with The Practice of System and Network Administration, Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook, Visible Ops) for high level administration. If you are interested in implementing or improving your operations this is a book for you.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book is excellent for anyone who works in a large-scale environment 8. November 2014

This happens to be my first review ever, but I could not resist after reading this book. If you are practicing modern DevOps methodologies, agile, ITIL, etc, then this is the book for you. One volume covering every aspect of large scale infrastructure imho is priceless.

This book is excellent for anyone who works in a large-scale environment. Never before have I personally read a book that has covered almost every aspect of my career. I highly recommend this book to anyone who manages large scale systems. This book has helped me in my career, and has improved my view of so many of the topics included.

I wish there were more books out there like this; I could not put it down.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Best technical cloud computing book I've read 11. Dezember 2014
Von Nicholas S. Hardiman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
The book is a textbook for technicians like me and other people in the business, like my boss. This book is high-level - it give an end-to end description of all the components of distributed computing, from design to operation. It's like a framework that more specialist technical books (say, books about Puppet, MQ or Node.js) slot into.

Despite working in the industry since the pre-web days, I found things I didn't know in this book. It does take a fair bit of reading - luckily, the writing is consistent all the way through. It hasn't got that clunky feel of some books that seem to be stitched together from many sources.

Excellent book. I would recommend this book to anyone building and operating cloud applications.

Some valuable gems of information, and although much of what's covered may not be new to someone with a lot of experience building large distributed systems it's still a great read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Impressive breadth of material for ANYONE working with modern distributed systems 19. Dezember 2014
Von Richard L. Seroter - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I enjoyed the deep dive into scaling practices, handling failure, building teams, choosing infrastructure, and building maintainable systems. The authors don't assume an expert level of knowledge, and clearly explain each topic.

This book is well-written, easy to follow, and bursting with relevant information about distributed computing. Readers will find realistic examples, practical advice, and an impressive range of topics. Whether you are a CIO, architect, developer, or system administrator, you will find something that improves your ability to deliver systems that scale.
