This book could have been more aptly titled, "How Can I Stop ________ ?"

The author's purpose seems to be making you more aware of your habitual behaviors, especially the ones that you probably wish you hadn't done just a short time later. Will this book help you to live without regret? No. But it will make you feel better equipped to try.

If you have read anything about neuroscience and habits, you are probably already more knowledgeable than you will be after reading The Power of Habit, which seems to be intended for those new to the subject who would like the simplest possible explanation. And it is a very clear and simple explanation. I admire people who can do that. It's beyond my personal skills.

So what will you learn? In many diagrams, you will see expressed the concept that when we act on cues (a "routine") that give us a reward, we form habits of doing the things that got us the reward the last time we acted on the cue. In other words, Pavlov rang the bell when he fed the dogs. After awhile, he could just ring the bell and the dogs would salivate because they associated the bell with food to soon come. Animal training is often based on the same approach, by providing food when a desired behavior occurs.

You'll also learn a little about how you can overcome such habits in a brief (too brief, to my taste) appendix:

(1)Identify the routine you habitually do.
(2)Experiment with different rewards to replace the one you don't want to seek any more.
(3)Isolate the cue that triggers the routine.
(4)Have a plan to act differently.

We all have our little habits, some of them most likely of the bad kind, and those are the ones we strive to overcome. If only it would be that simple. In his book The Power Of Habit Charles Duhigg approaches the subject of what habits are and how we can ultimately change them.
Written in an engaging style, with just the right balance of scientific fact and actual examples, you can tell straight away that the author has a journalistic background. This certainly pays off and pulled me right into this fascinating field of social sciences, or more precisely, human behavior.
As much as I enjoyed the first few chapters, it soon became clear that despite the different case studies of individuals, organizations, as well as societies, the core of each chapter was repeating itself over and over again, ultimately becoming redundant. The underlying message that habits cannot be eradicated, but must instead be replaced, and the connection between "cue", "routine" and "reward" haven't just been presented once or twice, but countless times, culminating in a guide to using the ideas presented in the book. You could practically skip the actual book and still get the gist by reading the appendix alone. As much as the narrative swept me along and the deliberations proved to be insightful, I felt that the book in its entirety has been unnecessarily blown up by its length.
In short: Interesting yet repetitive study on habits and how to change them!

"The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg is book that present latest discoveries about the humans habits, how they're created and is it possible (and how hard) to change them.

The author explains that when someone does something enough times that will become habit, either nice or bad one, or like author said: "...What we most often do is not because we choose to do it, but there is some part of our brain that is wired in way that it makes us do it automatically".

This sentence is actually the main idea of the book that author will decompose describing it in details, process of habits creation, both scientifically and physiologically.

By reading it, a reader will be able to better understand mechanisms of human behavior, our own, our family and all the other people around us.

The author tells his story in form of multiple short stories, almost anecdotes about people who are working in different professions proving that factors that influence habits creation doesn't depend on social status or education level.

Probably the most interesting book part is one when author starts presenting how today's organizations are making great efforts to collect information about their potential and existing customers in order to predict their habits or force creation of new ones.

It's almost unbelievable to see simplicity of our brain in action, to see how persuasive are their commercials and other marketing tools in order to create habits in customers that will make them to purchase (more) their products.

Additionally, the author is showing the way habits are created by leaders, in a way they create habits for their followers together with reward for its following, giving example of Martin Luther King.
