Kurzbeschreibung

4. Februar 2008
"The Police" sind ein unbestrittener Klassiker der Pop- und Rockgeschichte. Die excellenten Musiker Sting (Bass, Gesang), Andy Summers (Gitarre) und Stewart Copeland (Schlagzeug) setzten Meilensteine. Mit Stings unverwechselbarer Stimme und Andys bahnbrechendem Gitarrespiel brachte das Trio Meisterwerke hervor, darunter "Message In A Bottle", "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" oder das legend„re "Every Breath You Take".

Synopsis

Three consummate musicians - Sting (Bass), Andy Summers (Guitar) and Stewart Copeland (Drums) - were The Police. Outstanding amongst them was Sting's unique voice, capable of turning songs into hymns. Just think of "Message In A Bottle", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Don't Stand So Close To Me" or "Every Breath You Take". Despite starting up during the punk period of the late 70s, The Police's early sound was much more influenced by Reggae and Ska. They released five tremendously successful albums and toured the whole world. However, after a few years fame began to take its toll, friction crept in, and the musicians decided to go separate ways for a few years. A comeback attempt in 1986 stalled pretty soon. The band members embarked on more or less successful solo careers - what remains of them today are some of the most haunting songs of the 80s. Didi Zill met The Police for seven photo sessions in the years between 1979 to 1981. Among them were some at-home shoots - a very innovative format at the time.

Session 1 - 1979, Germany / Session 2 - 1980, Ireland, at-home shoot with Andy Summers / Session 3 - 1980, Ireland, at-home shoot with Sting / Session 4 -1980, London, at-home shoot with Stewart Copeland / Session 5 - 1980, Chicago, Aragon Ballroom / Session 6 - 1981, Montserrat / Session -1981, festival in Philadelphia. This is by far the largest illustrated book available on The Police. Its luxurious coffee table format and rich colouring make it a must-have-item for every true fan. The book was created for dedicated fans of the Police, one of the greatest bands in rock history.

Von Nicole N. Pellegrini - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
I was thrilled to see a new book published on The Police earlier this year and ordered it direct from the German publisher. This is a large collection of photographs taken from several sessions Didi Zill had with the Police both as a group and individually. Photographs are presented from several live performances; home visits with Sting, Stewart, and Andy; a European awards ceremony; and the Montserrat recording sessions for Ghost in the Machine.

Some of these images may look familiar to Police collectors as they have been used in the past in various magazine articles (though it is nice to finally have high-quality prints of them). My favorites are the Montserrat pictures--just lovely work, and they show the band members looking relaxed and quite happy. The home photos with each band member are also quite interesting and rather showcase their very different personalities and styles.

The only drawback to me were actually the live performance shots. Many of them are very grainy and not, to my eye, particularly revealing or interesting. I think Lynn Goldsmith did a better job of capturing the energy of the Police on stage in her photographs; these just left me unimpressed and unmoved.

This is a fairly expensive book. As a whole I recommend it but perhaps only to the more dedicated Police fans and collectors out there; those who are curious to a wider sampling of images of the bands should still first check out older volumes of photographs by Lynn Goldsmith and Danny Quatrochi.
