Kurzbeschreibung

Emory James is, by his own admission, not the type of person the adjective exciting would ever deign to touch with a ten-foot pole. Cautious, reserved and staid, however, all crowd around him like best friends. Still, he gets by -- or at least he gets by up until his fiancée dumps him at the altar. Out of spite, he takes a solo honeymoon to Thailand, where he can pretend to be someone better than himself for a little while. In meeting Nate, a fellow traveler, Emory slowly discovers how to stop pretending.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Cary Attwell lives in Seattle, Washington, where it rains and rains like the dickens, except when it doesn't. Fretting occurs on a daily basis, and small acts of idiocy are perpetrated with stunning proficiency much more often.

5.0 von 5 Sternen soooo funny! 25. Mai 2013

I laughed out loud several times while reading this one. Loved the style and the characters just for lines like "so I asked myself "self...".
It was fun, the characters were well developed and I didn't want it to end. What else is there to say?

5.0 von 5 Sternen What's not to like about a guy named Emory? 3. März 2013

Being the one left behind at the altar sucks rocks. Does it? Not of you make the best of it--at least, you can take the honeymoon trip you once planned with your wasn't to-be wife-to-be. Surprises, even life-altering ones, are likely to occur in an exotic place like this, right? Though sometimes they're also right around the corner.
The beginning was kept from being maudlin by Emory's (Emory!) voice- however the way his fear made him almost stupid nearly broke my heart. And Nate, he's just the sweetest person....must simply like him.
A beautiful book, not too angsty, not too sweet, just right.

4.0 von 5 Sternen And what a novel it was 21. Januar 2013
Von Eli L Sanne - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I'm the proud owner of some over 300 m/m romances and yes I know much of the genre is written for women by women because hey ... we find two hot men admitting to vulnerabilities and learning to be tender with each other ... just more than a little heartwarming. But often we lose much of good storytelling to mindless 50 shades of type writing. What I enjoy about much of the men who write in this genre is that we often see a solid story within the romance with fully developed primary and secondary characters. In short, they write much the same way they live (if they are gay). Their sexuality is simply a part of the larger picture. So too with The Other Man. A very well thought out story with developed characters. We really know and understand the characters and the world they live in and why they make the choices they do.

Now don't get me wrong, it's a romance but without much of the torrid and lurid love scenes YET you sometimes feel the love story more in this book that reading about two men getting it on and being lubed, stretched ... etc when really the act should be about the love and feelings and not always about animalism (which trust me has it's part and I'm a big fan). This story, however, is so well told that you get pulled and sucked in and rooting for the characters despite their flaws. Great read. But I did have to take off one star for lack of at least one romantic if not torrid love scene.

5.0 von 5 Sternen just wonderful, this story 7. Januar 2013

every review here says it all - this is a wonderfully written story. Intelligent, funny, erudite - prose so good that it defies rating in the Amazon system. The m/m genre has become so popular and so filled with mediocre stuff that it's a caricature, a cliche - just another form of Harlequin romance, without the busty women but plenty of porn style men, and about as interesting as watching pectoral muscles flexing. Okay, so women are the buyers of the bulk of m/m stories, I get that, but do the publishers choose on the frequency of the cut-and-paste sex scenes, ignoring that there's no story there? If so, they probably wouldn't salivate at The Other Guy, a story of substance, with believable characters, wit and - as another reviewer put it - polished writing. Polished to a luster, this one is. If you're a gay man reading in this section, TOG should be one of your favorites, if not your go-to story - it's excellent. Whoever Cary Attwell is, he/she has shown talent and real author chops with this one. Please try this - you'll be really glad that you have.

I actually laughed out loud quite a few times and I never do that. Out of hundreds of m/m romances I've read over the years, this one gets the second place in humor. Emory can be frustrating, self-deprecating and sometimes downright sad, but at the same time he is that geek in all of us. The guy who tries hard to be a normal, well adjusted person because no one had ever told him that it's irrelevant to being happy. Each time he fails, it becomes harder to try again. By the time he meets Nate, we can almost believe that Emory is ready to throw in the towel and accept what comes his way without any of his preconceived notions of normalcy. But that hardly makes a good novel. Instead, Emory does what any other human in his position is likely to do. He sticks his head in the sand. And if you can picture him like that, you will likely be tempted to give him a swift kick in the behind. Because through this entire story, Nate is THAT guy. You know which guy I'm talking about; the one you never find but keep hoping to. That guy we all know exists somewhere but we're never lucky enough to come across one. Don't get me wrong, he's not a perfect, hollow statue. He's as real as Emory despite the fact that we don't have an access into his head. He's funny, sweet, sexy and possesses infinite patience, which as it turns out, is quite necessary to get through to someone as stubbornly set in his ways as Emory. All in all, I throughly enjoyed this and I recommend it without a hesitation.
Warnings/spoilers
No sex scenes, piss your pants humor (seriously, wear diapers), a main character you just might wanna throttle, a sexy, SEXY photographer, and an ex girlfriend who should be permanently tied to the crazy train that took her out of the town in the first place

All the other reviewers so far have said everything a reader needs to know--I just wanted to register my enjoyment of this book and encourage the author if he/she is reading these reviews to keep going. You've got what it takes!

This is the kind of book I troll Amazon for nearly daily to put on my Kindle. The plot is not completely unique, but what makes this book so satisfying to read is the beautifully polished writing, dialogue and characterization. Emory and Nate meet under less than auspicious circumstances, but their story (with slight fairytale overtones) still seems very real and is very affecting. This is a story for those of us who like romance and its conventions but don't like stories spoon-fed to us with too much explication and explanation. We've probably all fallen prey to the books whose author seems to have just attended a write-by-numbers and Make Your Writing Pop with Amazing Buzzwords seminars. Note to authors: Not every sexual encounter needs to have the word "amazing" thrown in like a post-coital cigarette.

Emory's initial internal dialogue, though very funny, seems a little precious--it's not that it wasn't fun to read--but then I had to reflect that Emory is an unreliable narrator of sorts--he's kind of clueless, and doesn't even know himself very well, as we find out. But that's a small quibble and it by no means affected my enjoyment of the book. I was in awe of the author's cleverness and skill--very well done and a true pleasure to read.

I really liked Emory and Nate, but as another reader mentioned it would have been nice to hear/see Nate's point of view--perhaps the author would consider writing it from that angle like Jay Bell did in Something Like Summer and then the other main character's pov more recently in Bell & Bell's Something Like Winter. Wishful thinking, but it's the mark of a really good story when the reader doesn't want to let the characters go and hopes for a sequel or--throw us a bone--a bit of a mention in the next book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fresh, Amusing, Heartfelt 16. Dezember 2012

This is the story about The Other Guy, the one that the heroine left at the altar when she decided to take her own chance of happiness. Nothing wrong with The Other Guy; he is simply not the one for her. And we usually don't care about The Other Guy, because he's not the 'main star'.

This debut story charmed me from the very beginning. While it's horrible what happened to Emory, but the way the story was written, the public embarrassment was handled with a dose of humor and dignity. There wasn't overwhelming drama or angst or self-pity. It made me genuinely care for Emory and his own journey to get his own Happily-Ever-After. Emory was not without flaws. he had tendency to pick the 'safe' road, that he preferred to run away from his problems or put them in a box to deal with another day. But because of that, it made him human too :). And I was happy for him when he finally did the right thing.

There was a lot of amusing banters, Emory and Nate had great chemistry ... and the supporting characters were also very, very good. I enjoyed this one so much, definitely one of my favorites of debut-story this year.
