From Booklist

Ages 4^-9. A large, greenish blue wave towers over the house of an old woman and her dog, Bones. The old woman sees the wave as an enemy and lives in constant fear that it will fall on her. She doesn't realize that the wave bends low to her because it loves her, and she doesn't appreciate the gifts it offers: she shouts, "Wasteful," when it gives her a fish, and she refuses to get up in the morning when "the light [runs] in liquid patterns across the walls" of her cottage to awaken her. A young woman who happens by points out that the wave could take someone away, but it isn't until Bones disappears on the top of the wave that the old woman finds out what the wanderer really means. Jackson's deftly written text moves between lyrical, lovely phrases describing the wild beauty of the wave and the acerbic, energetic speech of the tough, fearful woman. The collage illustrations are lively without being frenzied, incorporating photographs, torn and cut paper, paint, colored pencil, and words from many languages. They visually complement the text, as, for example, when a map on which Jackson has painted shows through under her picture of the departing wanderer. Susan Dove Lempke

From Kirkus Reviews

In this story of deliverance from Jackson, a curmudgeonly old woman discovers her liquid neighbor has greater things on its mind than raindrops and the occasional proffered fish. The old woman in question lives in a house at the foot of a perpetually standing wave. The sun gives the wave a glorious light and swallows play in its tangled crest, but the old woman only sees a nemesis: She has built a washtub boat in case the wave falls, scolds her dog, Bones, for playing in the water, and plants umbrellas on her roof in a vain attempt to ward off the wave's droplets. A stranger makes her see the possibilities the wave offers, and the old woman sails off for uncharted waters. Artful collage paintings, with snippets of maps to conjure terrae incognitae, allow the text to achieve its oblique promise of transcendence in the sudden, severe breach of routine. What a unique book! 26. Februar 1999
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Sometimes we fail to perceive the beauty of a place if we have been there too long. This is what happens to the old woman who has lived at the foot of a standing wave all her life. The wave loves her. It bends low to her as if it is going to kiss her. It tries to please her by offering her gifts such as shadows of dancing fish. But the woman simply sees the wave as an enemy instead of a friend and a possibility--until one day a traveler passes by . . . This book could be used to remind children, as well as adults, that sometimes we simply forget to appreciate what's right around us.

The illustrations are gorgeous collage paintings. My five-year-old child enjoys this book. He thinks it is beautiful. Readers who are older will not only love the beauty of its language and illustrations but also the meaning the story connotes.

I loved this book, almost enough to give five stars. It's wonderful to meet a real, cranky character and the patience of nature who waits for her to find herself. The illustrations give a lot to look at. Certainly NOT just for children 4-8.

Book just as described with a little wear. This was my sons favorite book as a child so I purchased it for him at the age of seventeen. He was touched and had to read it soon as he opened it.
