"I can't remember a more satisfying and well-written book than David Nemec's The Official Rules of Baseball. It's a book you can refer to time and again--"must "reading for all, including the players."--Phil Rizzuto

Fascinating in their origins, central to the history of the game and to how it is played today, the rules of baseball provide never-ending material for the arguments, anecdotes, and great moments that make baseball what it is. In "The Official Rules of Baseball, Updated and Revised", David Nemec relates the history of the rules, explores how the rules have changed and why, and relates some of the many memorable episodes in baseball in which the rules have played a central role: the famed "Pine Tar Game," the beaning of Ray Chapman, and many more. The book is illustrated with over fifty black-and-white photographs of key moments in the evolution of baseball's rules. "The Official Rules of Baseball, Updated and Revised" will be required reading for anyone who wants to know the game well - and for the millions of fans who want to know it better. This title includes: the entertaining story of the rules' evolution; an official publication of Major League Baseball; and over 50 vintage photographs.

Seemingly it would be safe to assume that the winner of a baseball game has always been the team that scored the most runs at the end of nine innings; but actually the 1857 season was the first in which a game was required to go nine innings, with five innings constituting an official contest if play were stopped for some reason. Lesen Sie die erste Seite

Definitive Baseball rules and their history. 13. Juli 2009
Von Thomas G. Kirwin - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Incredibly thoroughly researched. This is at once a definitive rulebook AND a fun ride through the history of how these rules developed and were sometimes cleverly or critically employed. It helps to have a good understanding of the game, but it is an easy and enjoyable read as the author walks us through accessible explanations of sometimes arcane rules by using exciting examples of how they came about and often historic moments when they decided a key game.

A "must read" for all fans and trivia buffs.

Okay, so maybe it hasn't saved our marriage, but it has resolved an argument or two! You can find the answer to any baseball rule in this book!
Illustrated with stories from history of baseball. 1. Januar 2014
Von Gary Sprandel - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Let’s face it; reading the 72 pages of the complete rules in the appendix is pretty brutal, and best used as a reference. The first part of the book however, is a delight. Portions of the rules highlighted and a historical example included of why the rule was put into effect, and many of the players back in the day were about pushing the boundaries! Some of the historical graphics are superb, for example from the 1903 Word Series, where overflow spectators are packed into the outfield. In more modern time, the look of Joe Niekro’s face when his pockets are turned out to find an emery board is priceless. I particularly appreciated the chapter on scoring, and clear definition of the pitchers ERA. For some of the rules, checking out Youtube for visual explanation also helps.
The best baseball book ever written 10. Juli 2013
Von William Griggs - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I will make this short and sweet. I have well over 100 books on baseball with my primary interest in 19th century baseball and rate this as the best book I have ever read. No other book even comes close. Whenever I see a copy, I buy it and gift it to a friend. To rate this book only five stars is to say Babe Ruth was a pretty good player. I cannot think of a better gift for a baseball fan who wants to know about the history of the game.
Interesting historical context of the rules of baseball. 21. September 2014

Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
The majority of this book is devoted to providing the historical background of many of the rules of baseball, which I found interesting. The 2005 rules of baseball are also included although there are limited illustrations in the latter part of this book.
