Kurzbeschreibung

23. Oktober 2012
In The Ninja Defense, the classic art of the ninja is updated for maximum effectiveness in modern day situations. Stephen K. Hayes is a Black Belt Hall of Fame member and acknowledged "Father of American Ninjutsu." He has distilled and refined the knowledge he has built studying and teaching ninjutsu for decades into a comprehensive self-defense system that can defuse the worst situations the modern world has to offer.

The result is a realistic martial arts training system that includes instruction in techniques and strategies for dealing with:
  • grappling, throwing, choking, and joint-locking
  • striking, kicking, and punching
  • stick, blade, cord, and projectile weapons
  • handling multiple assailants and surprise attacks
  • overcoming psychological intimidation or bullying
This book, which includes a bonus DVD, focuses on Hayes' revised take on the classical ninja martial arts. He provides his readers with all the key ingredients—both physical and mental—to emerge safely from unexpected danger. The chapter on mental discipline will allow readers to feel more confident in whatever situation everyday life brings.

The Ninja Defense contains extremely practical techniques that the author honed while serving as a bodyguard for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and fine-tuned through years of teaching. It is the ultimate self-defense book from a true martial art master.

Pressestimmen

"Hayes has spent the last 20 years recasting the ninja strategies into a self-defense framework more suited to the threats and experiences of modern societies, and The Ninja Defense serves as a well organized, accessible quick introduction to these techniques. [T]he uniqueness of Hayes's approach is how he has integrated them into a practical self-defense curriculum that is suitable for all body types and even psychological profiles. The Ninja Defense also comes with a DVD so that, indeed, these moves and skills can be practiced in the home."—Tallahassee Writers Association

4.0 von 5 Sternen Viel Hintergrundwissen 8. Januar 2014
Von Dave
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf

Received it 2 hours ago!

Full color pictures and perfect bookbinding workmanship! Pages are stitched, not glued. And then a 1 hour + DVD included... I am a happy camper!

Haven't read it by now, but knowing the author and his works since 30 years now, I know the content is great.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent book for martial artists and anyone seeking a simple and effective self-defense system. 1. November 2012
Von Joseph J. Truncale - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
The author is well known in the martial arts field and has numerous books and videos on the Ninjutsu system. I have read most of his books but this volume approaches the subject of self-defense in a unique and interesting way. Though his To-Shin-Do self-defense system is based upon his many years studying and training in the Togakure Ninjutsu system with Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi; nevertheless, he has created a simple and effective method for the average person to avoid trouble and defend themselves in numerous situations.

There are many things to like about this book. Besides the clear instructions and the color photos showing each technique, this book also includes an excellent (almost 70 minutes) DVD which reinforces the techniques and tactics explained in the book. This makes the book a must have, not only for serious martial artists, but for also anyone interested in learning a simple and effective self-defense method.

The eleven chapters cover preparation for real threats, making the choice to fight, winning mentality, how danger escalates, defense postures, five phases of the fight, forward strikes and kicks, front arm captures and restraints, front body holds and restraints, captures and restraints from behind and why the ninja approach is better than the samurai. The DVD shows each technique numerous times and can serve as an excellent training aid. In conclusion, anyone interested in the martial arts and self-defense will benefit from reading this book and studying the DVD which comes with it.

Rating: 5 stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Monadnock Defensive Tactics(MDTS) System)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Best kept secrets for modern times 28. September 2012
Von Kriss Hurdle - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I LOVED "The Ninja Defense"! The secrets of how to live a successful, abundant life in plain sight; the path spelled out for methods of learning; honest reviews of martial arts; and a solid self- protection program all in one place. Includes a DVD that I will watch over and over and make required viewing for all our staff. With each read of the book, I find new insights. Thank you, Stephen K. Hayes, for keeping To-Shin Do relevant and thoughtful! 5+ stars!

5.0 von 5 Sternen What to train, How to train and Why. 27. November 2012
Von **SkipKent** - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
"Why," you may be wondering?

To get home Happy, Healthy and Safe, that's why! But there's much more to it than that. One of my favorite quotes in the beginning of the book states: "You do not have to beat everyone who wants to fight." What a refreshing and sobering alternative to the sporting or competitive mindset that sees every confrontation as something that must be openly 'won' to the detriment of the opposing side. Ninjutsu has very little to do with puffing up your chest and proving yourself the toughest guy on the block at every chance. In this way, and many others, there is a LOT of 'sneaky ninja stuff' baked in the material that Mr. Hayes presents in this book and DVD. Read, watch, train and learn! If you let it sink in, it can affect your outlook and life in very positive and important ways.

The DVD in particular gets top marks from me for its simple and distraction-free presentation. From the title screen you can watch it all at a gulp or select just the ideas or techniques you want to see. The material on the DVD ties in directly with what you're reading in the book and brings it to life in a way that anyone can practice and apply to their own training. I also love the frequent asides where Stephen Hayes and his senior students take time to present very clearly how to use pads and padded weapons to facilitate robust, safe and spirited training. Questions and 'what ifs' are anticipated and covered, but always adhere to and further illustrate the principle being covered. It's a great watch and a great reference, and is certain to inspire more (and more productive) training. The cooperative aspect of the training really shines through, which is something that I think is key to training successfully in any martial art. You also get a chance to hear the vocalizations during training which are a deceptively deep key to focusing the energy of a conflict to your benefit.

The insights and anecdotes presented in the book are priceless. The only drawbacks I can think of are a few minor areas where I feel that the text could use editing to clarify the author's intent. There are turning of phrase here and there that make perfect sense when spoken, but caused me to stumble and parse a bit when reading. That's a very minor nitpick in an otherwise flawless presentation. For the price, this book and DVD is an absolute steal.

Stephen K. Hayes is indeed a modern master, and no one (in my opinion, 15 years and still training) has taken the Ninjutsu of Soke Masaaki Hatsumi to the people who need it most like he has.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Masterfully written 28. September 2012
Von Mary A. Stevens, II - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I just got an advance copy of this book at the Ninja Festival. I've loved Stephen Hayes' books for years and this is an excellent addition to my library. As a young woman, I was always on the lookout for books that taught truthfully and authentically. They have often been hard to find. An-Shu Hayes' delivers the goods again.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Not what I expected. 23. Februar 2014
Von Nick Trevino - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Techniques outlined by instructors are beginner level not master level. Enclosed DVD is even worse. Book should be titled; "The layman's approach to every day possibilities." Very disappointing coming from a name like Stephen K. Hays.
