4.0 von 5 Sternen Where is the next . . . ? 27. Januar 2012

[[ASIN:098469210X the Next EXIT 2012] I pre-ordered this 2012 edition from Amazon back in 2011, and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. Have not hit the road with it yet (will, in a couple more weeks), but have arm-chair reviewed it against what I know about interstates that I use frequently. For my local/most used exit, it was right on the money . . . except for still listing one restaurant that went belly-up recently, clearly due to the poor economy and reduced traveler visits. That happened late in 2011, I expect it will be corrected in the 2013 issue.

Physically, the book is just about 1/8" smaller than 8-1/2 X 11 inches, and about 1/2" thick. Anything that will carry a half inch stack of standard 8-1/2" x 11" copy paper will hold the book. The paper is about the same quality as an ordinary city telephone book. The pages are thick enough that the next or previous page does not show through. The type is fairly small, but adequate for a passenger (A passenger is a person who is NOT driving) to look up & understand stuff. If you are alone in your car or truck, for crying out loud, pull off at some safe spot!

It takes a little study to figure out how the book is organized before you actually use it during a trip. I suggest you think of a stretch of Interstate that you know well, look it up in the book, check your travel direction, and see what it tells you about that well known stretch. Find a restaurant, a filling station, a hospital, a park, etc. Remember, if it is NOT on an Interstate, it won't be in the book! It shows handicap accessible facilities very nicely.

My bottom line is that I suspect I will be getting a new one each year, as long as my wife and I are hitting the Interstates to see friends, family, and places.

Have given this book to so many friends as gifts I have lost count. Particularly helpful to RVers. Nothing worse than getting off an Interstate towing a rig looking for Diesel and finding only stations that would not accommodate your rig. The red highlights that indicate RV friendly are wonderful. The latest update indicating which side of the Interstate the service is found is also useful. Have used this book for 5 years now and have only found one error.

This is a must have for those that travel. We are new RV travelers and this is an invaluable tool and the most used. Keep it in the truck. It is reasonably priced and worth every penny!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Won't hit the Interstate without it 21. April 2012

In a recent 3000 mile road trip, we found this guide invaluable. If you make frequent stops or prefer using a particular chain/brand of gas, etc., it's especially helpful. We found the listings through our 11 state journey remarkably up-to-date. I'd say for our travels it turned out to be 95% accurate. Obviously if you're without a navigator to read the listings, the usefulness of this guide is greatly reduced; go with the audio GPS. But my hubby loved flipping through the pages and alerting me miles in advance of where we'd be best off to stop and which direction to turn once exited.. That's right, in this marriage I do all the driving. :-).

The pages are flimsy- think phone book quality. Ours was pretty beat up just a few hundred miles into the trip. The layout may confuse a few folks at first, but once you understand how truly easily laid out it really is, you'll be looking up exits just for the heck of it, even if you've no intention of stopping! Remember, this is NOT a map, it's a companion. And it's patently useless unless you're traveling US Interstates. (For the newbies to cross country travel, those are the big highways with an I in front of the number). We were traveling by auto and tho it would be great for RVers, there are other guides more RV specific.

We'll be purchasing these as gifts for family members as so many people we've told about Next Exit had never heard of such a concept. From now on, we won't leave the state without it!

I would give this a 2.5 star rating. Although this book may be exactly what you need, I was hoping for something just a bit different.

First of all, it's printed on just about the worst paper ever; think about paper that you'd find in a phone book. THis means that despite very minimal use in the first few days (really, nothing more than flipping through it), the pages are bent, some are torn, and it's only going to get worse. And I could live with this face save for the following comment: This is just not going to be very helpful. I was hoping for something entertaining to read while on the two week 'drive went and see where we end up' adventure that is set to begin in about a month. THis is not that book.

It is, however, a rather decent reference guide to an exit-by-exit breakdown of the interstates (not highways, interstates). My adventure begins in the state of Iowa, and there are three interstates in this fair state: I-29, I-35, and I-80. To give you an idea as to what this book says, I'll pull a example. On I-29, the first IA exit is exit 151. There you will find a Casey's, a Fareway goods, and a intersection to IA-12 N. The NEXT EXIT (clever, eh?), exit 149, has a Conoco, a Horizon rest stop, a Horizona II,and a Jiffy Lube. On the basis of the book's description I was thinking this might be something interesting to read as we drove along. Instead, it's a phonebook, with an exit-by-exit account of what you can find on the interstate system. This might be exactly what you are looking for, and if so, it's worth the $10. I have a GPS for that information and was hoping for something a bit more interesting.

If you know what you're getting, and are looking for what this text is, I suspect you'll be happy with it. I'll take it along for the trip, but it'll be unneeded.
