As the subtitle states, this is a handbook of resources for both in-depth research and informal reading about the "information revolution." In the book's first 40 pages, Gay, a freelance writer and consultant in the area of educational and communication technologies, provides a detailed introduction to the origin, development, and social implications of this revolution. He uses Alvin Toffler's "third wave" analogy to explain the dynamics of change on a massive scale in the digital age. The rest of the work contains a chronology of important events shaping the revolution, biographical sketches of key people and organizations, representative charts and graphs depicting the stages of development, annotated bibliographic references for print, audiovisual and digitally available resources, and a glossary of terms. Gr 10 Up--Informative and well organized, this book brings together in one readable volume a valuable compendium of data on the Information Revolution. An introductory chapter discusses the main issues (political, social, and economic) of the information age and defines its buzzwords (Internet, infrastructure, cyberporn, etc.). A 16-page annotated chronology traces the history of communication technology from Sumerian pictographs in 3500 B.C. to the Telecommunications Reform Act of 1996. Brief biographical sketches of key figures, a statistical chapter loaded with bar-graphs, selected documents and manifestoes of the information revolution, a lengthy selection of print and nonprint resources, and a useful glossary are also included. With today's emphasis on high-tech information systems, a book like this is essential as a kind of Information Revolution primer.
