Kurzbeschreibung

6. September 2000
"The Encyclopedia of the Dog" aims to tell the reader everything about man's canine companion. It is set out in an easy-to-follow style, accompanied by full-colour illustrations. The language of dogs has become a popular subject of study, with new discoveries being made all the time. In this succinct guide, the author makes use of his experience as a behavioural expert to explain why dogs behave as they do. Every facet of their lives is explored, from courtship and mating to aggression and communication - and superb colour photographs give a rare glimpse into this complex canine world.

It's important to choose our friends wisely, and relationships with man's best friend require a special kind of wisdom. Renowned veterinarian Bruce Fogle (Natural Dog Care) has compiled over 400 pages of helpful advice concerning canine companions, and those looking to learn more about their favorite breeds need look no further. The New Encyclopedia of the Dog's six chapters are filled with gorgeous photos illustrating dogs of all ages from every breed imaginable. While the majority of the book is devoted to explanations of specific breeds, five short chapters provide information on evolution, domestication, health and anatomy, communication, and the roles dogs have played in recent human history. With historical photographs of tapestries, ceramics, and movie posters, as well as intricate diagrams of canine anatomy and charts outlining proper health care, these chapters provide great material for middle-school research papers or science-fair projects.

The 310 pages that fall within the "Domestic Dog Breed" chapter are further divided into nine categories of dogs that range from fascinating primitives to hard-working livestock and guarding dogs. Each breed has multiple photos, both as an adult and a puppy, and a standard set of information that includes size, weight, life expectancy, date and country of origin, and AKC registration. A few simple icons, explained in this chapter's introduction, provide you with information at a glance--when learning about new breeds, you'll know right away if the dog requires extensive grooming and plenty of exercise, or is suitable for small children and city dwelling. From the popular golden retriever to the exotic xoloitzcuintli, the perfect pooches in these photos would melt even the heart of Cruella DeVille. --Jill Lightner

The strength, such as it is, of this book is that it at least gives multiple pictures of each breed and samples of coat colors. This does give one a fairly good impression of what the breed in toto looks like which is good for the rarer breeds, about which it does at least include some information.
However especially with the rarer breeds the behavior is, or should be, of greater concern and this book is quite deficient in this area and it gives many false impressions. One of the other reviewers mentioned the Dogo as an example. I have a acquiantance with one who agrees with that reviewer. In my case I've had a Central Asian Ovcharka for over two years now and find this book's summary of them flawed. It is not a dog for everyone but this books just plainly states they are unsuitable especialy with children. Of all the livestock guardian breeds this one has been (some might say ruthlessly) bred for kindness towards children. Anyone with any experience with them would be surprised to know that they are not good with kids. We've invested quite a lot of time in learning about the breed, in which effort this book was not helpful, and socializing her. Our seven year old and thirteen year old are quite surprised to learn that this is not a good fmaily dog. I also found that the life expectancies listed for the larger breeds to be remarkably consistent in the book and quite inconsistent with real world situations. I've had Bullmastiffs and they don't live as long as this book claims and I know he overstates the life expectancies of Irish Wolfhounds. The rarer (non-AKC type) larger breeds also live longer than this book states. There are enough fourteen year old Caucasians, Kangal Dogs, Central Asians and Anatolians (only recently have they closed the stud book) for this not to be a remarkable age.
If one does not stop with or trust everything in this book it is an okay-to-good addition to one's library.

Appears at first to be a comprehensive guide to a wide variety of breeds, however on closer examination the information is skimpy and often just plain inaccurate on several of the rarer breeds. The breeds that suffer the worst from Mr. Fogle's misinformation also happen to be the breeds banned by the UK. For example, Mr. Fogle claims that the sole purpose of the Dogo Argentino (one of the banned breeds) is for dog fighting - a claim which is completely untrue. Anyone who knows anything about the breed, knows that the breed was created specifically for HUNTING WILD BOAR IN PACKS and is still extensively used in this capacity to this day - but Mr. Fogle makes no mention of this whatsoever. Having been a Dogo owner, breeder, trainer and specialty judge for the past 10 years, I feel quite qualified to call Mr. Fogle out on the carpet for either his ignorance of this breed (in which case, he has no business writing about it) or his deliberate lie (no doubt to appease his British publishers). Having found several "inaccuracies" in the descriptions of some of the breeds that I am very familiar with, I am very suspicious of Mr. Fogle's descriptions of the breeds that I am not very familiar with. Since I can not trust Mr. Fogle's information, I find the book virtually useless. I am glad that I only checked the book out from a library and therefore didn't waste any of my money to buy it. I would recommend "The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World" by Bonnie Wilcox, DVM and Chris Walkowicz. I did purchase this book and treasure it as an excellent, accurate reference with wonderful pictures. This book is coffee table quality. Also, for more information on some of the rare breeds here in the US, I would recommend "A Celebration of Rare Breeds" by Kathy Flammholtz. The information is good but it doesn't have really great pictures, since some of the breeds are so rare that even a picture is difficult to get.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Necessary for all dog lovers 11. Oktober 1997
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This is one of the most well written and informative books on dogs that you can purchase. It includes full color pictures of over four hundred breeds - everything from the Puli to the Poodle, the Ibizan Hound to the Basset Hound. Each breed is complete with a description of size, colors, temperament, and physical characteristics. There are also sections on the history of dogs, general care of dogs, breeding, health, getting a puppy, etc. Dr. Fogle leaves nothing out. If you are a dog owner or simply love dogs, this book is essential to your home library.

This is the Coffee table book for every dog owner. Once
you guests pick it up they will be lost among the 400
breeds illustrated in magnificent color. As a dog owner
and breeder for 50 years, I found hundreds of dogs I
have never seen before. Rare breeds they may be here in the
U.S. but many of them are the result of their need in the
countries of their origin.

I strongly recommend this beautiful book to any dog lover
who wants to round out their knowledge of dogs of the world.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Essential for every dog owner 30. August 1999

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
My mother and I love dogs and are able to identify most breeds by sight. Naturally, we loved this book. Not only does it provide information on many, many breeds, but it has at least two pictures of every kind of dog. From the popular Golden Retriever and Poodle to the extremely rare Chinook and Danish Chicken Dog, this book has a lot of information. I especially liked that it gave favorable descriptions of the Newfoundland and St. Bernard. I own one of each.
